Nothing Can Stop Me Now! - 07/29/10 11:09 AM

I do not understand why making appointments to show other agents listings can be so frustrating at times. Often the number in the MLS to call is incorrect, such as it was both yesterday and today. I call the appointment number from the MLS and for what ever reason, the agent had entered his office number instead of the appointment center that his office uses.
So after getting the correct number from his office, I call his appointment center. And the listing is not in the appointment center data base. We as REALTORS should always take the time to explain … (10 comments)

Why Do I Care and Why Should You? - 07/28/10 06:37 PM
The US Census Bureau has just released news that the home ownership rate fell to 66.9 percent in the second quarter, down from 67.1 percent in the first quarter, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This was the lowest level since 1999.
Why does this concern me? I am sure that many would say that a REALTOR wants people buying and selling homes because that is how they make their money. However, I did not become a REALTOR just because it is a great career and an excellent way to earn a living!
I want others to experience the same joy … (1 comments)

Better Late Than Never? - 07/28/10 01:22 PM
In some cases, it may be OK to late instead of never. And maybe in the case of the news that the Advertising Council, in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), announced the launch of a national public service advertising campaign designed to encourage homeowners who are struggling with their monthly mortgage payments to learn about the Making Home Affordable Program. I just do not understand why they were not working from day one to promote this program and hopefully help more people that are facing a problem with … (2 comments)

It is Pretty Hard to Make an Informed Decision When You Are Not Informed - 07/27/10 02:51 PM
Home prices in the United States rose in May on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis according to Standard & Poor’s newest figures that were released today. The S&P/Case-Schiller report is considered to be the leading measure of U.S. home prices by many and you can read the report here.
And the Commerce Department’s U.S. Bureau of the Census today released new home sales data for June 2010.  It shows that sales of new single-family houses jumped 23.6 percent in June to 330,000 units, well above private-sector expectations of a 3.7-percent increase.
But what if you are interested selling a home … (0 comments)

Just a Ray of Sunshine - 07/26/10 04:04 PM
I just read an interesting article over at the Lake Hartwell Association website about the possibility of lower water levels for Hartwell. Everyone has been enjoying this summer on Hartwell Lake, especially since the lake has been above the full elevation of 660 ft for 157 days in the first 6 months of 2010. With the scorching temps we have seen this summer, and combined with the lower rainfall, this may change soon. You will remember me talking about how South Carolina declared a first stage or incipient drought status for all counties in SC on July 9.    Also, because … (0 comments)

Could This Be Good News for Change in Real Estate? - 07/24/10 02:03 PM
Only time will tell if the changes in the Dodd-Frank Act regarding the Home Valuation Code of Conduct (HVCC) will be a good thing. The HVCC is supposed to be gone in 90 days. But what changes can we expect? The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) implemented the HVCC in May 2009 after all the complaints about appraisals. And it has been a major disaster according to many in the real estate industry. I think it was a case of the pendulum swinging too far away from the way things were. Without a doubt, HVCC is a controversial regulation, and lead to … (0 comments)

South Carolina Film Commission Accepting Applications for Grants - 07/24/10 09:21 AM
With the great weather and scenic beauty in South Carolina, it is curious to me that we do not see more films being made in our state. But the South Carolina Film Commission announced today that it is accepting applications from independent film makers for grants to support short-film projects which may help to bring more projects, jobs & money to SC. The Production Fund, which will be offered in collaboration with the University of South Carolina and Trident Technical College, will provide grant funds for one major short-film project valued at $100,000, and up to six “mini-grants” for smaller short … (2 comments)

Economic Development and Jobs in Anderson South Carolina - 07/22/10 07:08 PM

Orian Rugs is a zero-landfill domestic manufacturer of synthetic woven area rugs and scatter rugs. It was started in Anderson in 1979. The existing Orian Rugs facility is HUGE! I Have Sold Some Dumps But Never Sold a Dump for this Much! - 07/21/10 10:31 AM

Home Affordability in Upstate South Carolina - 07/20/10 06:38 PM

The July Housing Scorecard features key data on the health of the housing market including:
Historic low rates continue to promote affordability: Families continue to benefit from the lowest rates in history on 30-year fixed mortgages. Since April of 2009, record low rates have helped more than 7.2 million homeowners to refinance, resulting … (0 comments)

Do You Want the Truth or a Lie? - 07/20/10 04:57 PM

Now despite the great news that Greenville is the 3rd strongest job market in the US, we are still not out of the woods. And considering the problems in certain areas are exaggerated by political bickering and grandstanding, there is still much work … (0 comments)

Understanding who the most likely buyer for your home is and tailoring the marketing for your home to the most likely buyer is an important part of effective marketing in real estate. Do you know who the most likely buyer for your home is and why they will want your home?

The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. W Churchill - 07/07/10 02:40 PM
According to the Mortgage Bankers Association, applications for mortgages to purchase property declined again last week, falling eight out of the last nine weeks. So I could be a pessimist and see that selling any of these great properties for sale in Upstate SC is going to be harder. Or I could see this as an opportunity to really accomplish something.
Because in life, nothing good ever comes easy. Whether it is running a marathon, losing some weight, or whatever. If it takes time, hard work and dedication it is quite possible that the end result will be even more special. … (2 comments)

Retrofitting Suburbia - 07/06/10 12:27 PM
Interesting conversation regarding retrofitting suburbs and urban sprawl, which makes me think about some of the empty buildings in the Upstate. We have seen some interesting retrofitting of old textile mills, but what else could be re used to make Upstate SC even better?

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by ~Douglas Adams - 07/05/10 12:43 PM
It’s official—on Friday morning, President Obama signed legislation to extend the closing deadline for the home buyer tax credit. Late Wednesday, Congress had approved an extension to the June 30 closing deadline for the home buyer tax credit, hours before it was set to expire. The move will give would-be buyers who signed a purchase agreement by April 30 more time to close on those deals and receive the credit that is worth up to $8,000. The new deadline is Sept. 30.
The Senate approved the measure unanimously on Wednesday, one day after the provision sailed through the House of Representatives … (2 comments)

HUD's 2009 American Housing Survey (AHS) is the most thorough look inside the homes of millions of Americans and reveals everything from the square footage of homes to how many homes have front porches, garages or even usable fireplaces. This survey was started in 1973!  For example, the 2009 survey reveals that significantly more American homes are larger and have more bedrooms and bathrooms than homes 37 years ago. In addition, homes of 1973 were significantly less likely to have central air conditioning and other amenities considered commonplace today.
There are 130,112,000 residential housing units in the U.S.; 86 percent of … (6 comments)

GOOD News in Real Estate for a Change! - 07/01/10 10:36 AM
Last night, the Senate passed the National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act of 2010 (H.R. 5569), an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program until September 30, 2010. This will allow transactions to move forward. The bill is retroactive and covers the lapse period from June 1, 2010, to the date of enactment of the extension. NAR members, including me,  sent more than 250,000 letters to Members of Congress encouraging them to extend the program. I would ask that all my friends that are members of NAR to please respond to NAR Calls to Action when you get them so that we … (2 comments)
