I had a conversation with a coworker yesterday about this exact topic.  She and her husband are hesitant to make the leap into homeownerhip, knowing it a large responsibility.  After what she has witnessed in the market, she said she knows there are consequences if homeownership is not treated seriously and she wants to be sure it is a responsibility she is willing to take on.  I have to say, after being in the business for 10+ years and witnessing the volatility of the mortgage and housing markets, I was happy to hear my coworker is really thinking homeownership through. The responsiblity of homeownership is making your house payment, paying your utilites, maintaining the property, etc., but another part of the responsibility of homeownership is holding yourself accountable for the decision you made and the commitment that is requried to own a home.
