A great recent article on buying or renting from the wall street journal. Seems the author points out it's better to buy if the price of the home is 15 times or less the cost of the rent. The example they used was rent of $10,000 per year, so if you could buy a similar home for $150,000 of less it's smarter to buy (historically speaking). According to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index (HOI) released last week being able to afford a home is close to its highest level ever for the sixth quarter in a row since it started measuring affordability nearly 20 years ago. Some of the most affordable houseig markets were in MI, OH and NY. Today is one of the best times ever at being able to afford a home and getting as much bang for your buck in a home as possible.
