A Memorial Day Tribute to Unsung Heroes - 05/30/10 09:26 PM
When Memorial Day rolls around each year, I can't help thinking about my dad's experience as a World War II POW at Stalagluft III.  (Yes, that was the site of the famous "Great Escape" and it occurred while he was there, but he didn't participate in it directly.)  We didn't talk much about those two years, but he never let us forget that five crew members on his B-17 bomber didn't live to become POWs.  In that sense, he felt he was one of the "lucky" ones.
I embarked on a mission, a few years ago, to assemble into albums the … (32 comments)

Rolling Thunder in DC for Annual Motorcycle Rally - 05/28/10 03:00 PM
Don't be surprised to see a few more motorcycles than usual today and throughout this weekend on the D.C. Beltway and other major arteries, as Veterans travel to DC for the Memorial Day motorcycle rally known as ROLLING THUNDER.

This annual demonstration was the brainchild of Vietnam Vet Ray Manzo, Corporal USMC, who rallied the support of retired Army Sergeant Major John Holland, head of the American Foundation for Accountability of POW/MIAs, Ted Sampley with Homecoming II Project at the Last Firebase vigil, retired Marine 1st Sergeant Walt Sides, president of the non-profit Warriors Inc, and Bob Schmitt who had … (13 comments)

Another Activerain Closing, and All I Got Was... - 05/27/10 02:46 PM
.. this lousy bag of trash!
Seriously, I was the selling agent and here I am taking out the seller's trash this morning, two days after closing.   People just wouldn't believe what we real estate agents do to earn our money, would they?  (Yet they don't hesitate to ask us for help with everything from moving to taking out their trash - even when they're the other agent's client!)

It all began with March 21, 2010 with the following message in my email box:   "My family and I are relocating from Montgomery, AL to the Washington, DC area due to … (60 comments)

Have Crofton Real Estate Sales Dropped Since the Tax Credit Ended? - 05/26/10 08:41 AM
The tax credit for homebuyers ended April 30, 2010.  What does that mean for Crofton homesellers?
Home sales have dropped in the greater Crofton area and throughout the country, now that the tax credit is behind us.  A quick glance at local home sales for the first 15 days of May 2010 vs. the first 15 days of April :

Fortunately, there do seem to be some homebuyers still out there, but we're not likely to see another month like April 2010 for quite a while.  The tax credit did what was intended, i.e. encourage people to … (8 comments)

Has the Crofton Real Estate Market Leveled Off Yet? - 05/14/10 11:10 PM
The greater Crofton area, which I consider to be the four adjacent zipcodes of 21114 (Crofton), 21035 (Davidsonville), 21054 (Gambrills) and 21113 (Odenton) looks a little different when we compare real estate statistics by the month, instead of the year.
Since January 1, Crofton and Odenton have been relatively stable when it comes to Average Sold Price. while the same cannot be be reported for Davidsonville and Gambrills.  I think this is largely because we have a much larger number of sold homes in both Crofton and Odenton, so one very high or low-priced home doesn't throw off the average the … (11 comments)

Crofton Real Estate Sales Up for April - 05/12/10 09:43 AM
Crofton homebuyers were out in force last month, motivated in part by the tax credit deadline of April 30, 2010.
Whether you measure April sales statistics against the previous month or the same month a year ago, the number of units sold was up.  Average and median sold prices were fairly steady, compared to a year ago, but down from March.  The best news for consumers of statistics is probably seen in the number of Days on Market - down significantly from last month AND last year.

Looking at this chart, compiled from monthly statistics published by MRIS, you can … (11 comments)

Shop for Mothers Day at Gambrills Flower Farm - 05/08/10 11:14 PM
If you live in the greater Crofton area and haven't yet discovered Gambrills Flower Farm, you need to head on over there today!  It's located on Route 175, about a mile or two west of Route 3, and about 5 miles east of Fort Meade.

They brought three truck-loads of hanging baskets, annuals, perennials and patio-size containers to display in front of Crofton Country Club at the garden club fashions show last week.  I've never seen such magnificent flowers... 'not surprising that they nearly sold out.
Yesterday, instead of buying summer annuals at my favorite garden center in Davidsonville, … (0 comments)

Say Thank You to a Teacher This Week - 05/05/10 08:34 AM
If you haven’t already said “thank you” to a teacher this week – National Teacher Appreciation Week – it’s not too late!
Most of us can remember one very special teacher that stood out above every other in our years between kindergarten and 12th grade.
For me, it was Sister Gonzaga at Blessed Sacrament in Chevy Chase.  My boys would no doubt say Ray Smith at DeMatha Catholic H.S. in Hyattsville.  Duane Arbogast was my daughter’s favorite - her 3rd grade teacher at Crofton Elementary - and, in a twist of fate, his son was her student at the University of Maryland!  … (13 comments)
