That "top of the world" feeling that comes with an offer on your home - 09/29/11 08:41 AM
Purchase offers are not something for home seller to take lightly, these days. It's good news, even when you're an engineer suspended 500 feet in the air by cable at the top of the Washington Monument in our Nation's Capital.
Engineers are scaling the Washington Monument this week to check for damage from the earthquake that recently hit the east coast. One of them received this news in a text message from her REALTOR on Tuesday morning as she worked at the peak of the monument.
She must have felt "on top of the world" as she looked out across the … (10 comments)

Let's Make a Trade - a Real Estate Best Practice - 09/26/11 12:05 AM
Let's make a trade!
Real estate agents sometimes do a good imitation of clowns passing out free balloons to kids.  Just substitute "Free CMA" or "Free Home Warranty" for those "free balloons"...
You've seen these ads and maybe even placed them.  Let me just say this common practice devalues the entire industry.
My earliest real estate trainers told me the object of every contact with a consumer was to make a trade; that each trade would bring me closer to a closed sale.  I took that advice to heart, and have incorporated that rule into my business for many years to … (12 comments)

What makes a "Military Specialist" different from any other agent? - 09/25/11 10:53 AM
A columnist for The Washington Times contacted me last week for an article she is writing, and this is the question she asked me:  What makes you a military specialist?
Of course, any agent can work with a relocating military family, whether they're coming or going.  And most of those transactions will be successful.  However, many military families prefer to work with a so-called "military specialist."
There's no professional designation or rulebook for real estate agents to be considered a "military specialist" but there may be certain expectations on the part of service members and their spouses.  My military clients tell … (10 comments)

It's raining, it's pouring... AGAIN! - 09/24/11 06:06 AM
Texas is having a dought, and we're drowning here in Crofton, Maryland. Another home football game for the Maryland Terps (4 in a row, this year), and a 3rd rainy game. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a fair-weather football game.  When it rains, I prefer to stay home and watch it on TV, even though that means I'm gonna miss a great tailgate party.
So much going on in this area today, in addition to the Terps game: The Renaissance Festival, Crofton Crafts Fair, solar homes on the National Mall, etc., etc., etc.  But, what's a fair-weather gal … (13 comments)

2011 Crofton Craft Fair is Tomorrow - 09/23/11 10:15 AM
The Crofton Craft Fair is a long-standing tradition in this community, and many people look forward to it on the last Saturday of September and April each year.
The Greater Crofton Chamber of Commerce will sponsor this event for the first time, on Saturday, and their enthusiasm for this project is showing. If the weather gods smile on that day, it should be more fun than ever. But don't let a little rain keep you away... the event is "on" even if it's rainy out there.
The craft fair will be held at Crofton Country Club parking lot from 10 a.m. … (5 comments)

Self-Sustainable Housing - Myth or Reality? - 09/22/11 10:25 AM
Real  estate agents fancy ourselves as being "up" on the latest housing innovations. However, I doubt many of us could imagine a fully self-sustainable house that doesn't rely on public utility companies for energy.
But this is more than a myth... it's reality for 200 University of Maryland students who designed and built "Watershed" as their entry into the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, taking place this weekend on the National Mall.
Local real estate agents who have a few free hours might enjoy checking out this and 19 other entries.  I'm guessing you would leave with a lot of conversation … (7 comments)

Davidsonville MD Real Estate Market Update - 09/20/11 09:05 AM
DAVIDSONVILLE MD 21035
After a dismal August, when there were no closings at all, real estate statistics for Davidsonville can only get better this month.  Fortunately, this is not the whole picture because five homes did go under contract in August (3 non-contingent, 2 contingent). Off-setting that gain, however, are seven new listings in this zipcode.
Real estate activity in Davidsonville is already looking up in September, with one closing so far this month.  That may not seem like a lot, but anything is an improvement over August, and three homes have gone under contract since September 1 with more than … (3 comments)

Potential Home Sellers Read the Real Estate Statistics and Cry... - 09/13/11 07:56 AM
A very depressed message appeared on an online forum recently about the local real estate market.  I could see, hear and even feel the angst and frustration...
I would like to sell my townhome this summer.  For the past several months, I've been watching the Crofton market and it is just FLAT...
The post goes on to say how the market in another area is moving right now, but Crofton is slow and prices have dropped dramatically (in her words).  I wanted to just reach out and give the author of this post a big giant hug and tell her … (10 comments)

Concert to Remember 9/11 at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center - 09/11/11 03:56 PM
The University of Maryland Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor tonight, September 11, to commemmorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11/2001.  Faculty members and Maryland Opera Studio singers will join the student groups for this performance at 7:30 p.m., in the Dekelboum Concert Hall at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
According to the University's School of Music website, this Requiem Mass was Mozart's last work before his death, and it summons momentous events of loss and remembrance of the departed.  "It's an unfinished masterpiece that evokes the tragedy of loss," said conductor Ed Maclary.

A Walk of Remembrance Tomorrow for 9/11 Victims at University of Maryland - 09/10/11 07:14 AM
Tomorrow morning, September 11, 2011, members of the University of Maryland community will begin to assemble at 8:45 a.m. in the recently-completed Garden of Reflection adjacent to the Memorial Chapel.  Individuals and groups will walk in memory of those who died in the attacks ten years ago. The walk will continue for the next 24 hours, through the labyrinth. Each participant's walk along this quarter-mile path will honor one individual.
Hundreds of people have signed up to walk for for a specific person of their choice or one assigned to them, along with a brief biography of that individual.  Participaants were … (6 comments)

Your Agent's Role in the Sale of Your Home - 09/09/11 10:24 AM
What do you expect of your real estate agent?
It's okay for you to blurt out an un-edited list of demands that will make your agent just about fall out of the chair, thinking "Why did I open this can of worms?"
Or you may hesitate to answer because you know what you want, but you don't know if it's reasonable to expect.

Canton, Massachusetts, Buyer Agent and Attorney Christine Smith summed up her customer service philosophy in a post on Activerain yesterday, Put the Client First and the Rest Will Take Care of Itself, and that probably sums up … (6 comments)

Crofton Village Garden Club members discover the art of flower arranging - 09/08/11 09:18 AM
Several new members of Crofton Village Garden Club got together in late August for an informal workshop hosted by Sunny Frank in her back yard.  Sunny and Bernie Robertson shared basic information about flower preparation with the novice floral designers, and guided them through the creation of three different arrangements.

Participants paid for their flowers and containers and brought a bag lunch, so there was no cost to the club.  It was a beautiful way to enjoy the calm before the storm, as Hurricane Irene headed up the coast for arrival the next day.
At least one of … (5 comments)

Will it rain for the Terps season-opener tonight? - 09/05/11 09:07 AM
The Randy Edsall era begins tonight for Terps football, and we'll be there as the Terps take on the Miami Hurricanes.  We've been season ticket-holders for over a decade, and the season opener always has a certain magic.  When it's a night game, usually followed by fireworks, all the better!
But alas, there's a 90% chance of heavy rain, according to the NOAA.gov website - a pretty reliable source.  Now THAT could put a damper on anything, including this much-anticipated football game.  Will that stop the Woda's?
One thing is for sure:  We won't miss tailgating before the game since our … (8 comments)

The blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, in the Grand Ballroom at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union on campus.
Other scheduled events at the University include a 4-part web series, a concert, and a walk … (1 comments)

Kickoff Today for Navy Football - 09/03/11 07:52 AM
Kickoff  for the 2011 season and the Navy vs. Delaware game is 3:30 p.m. today at the Navy Marine Corps Stadium on Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis.
Parking at the stadium is reserved for those with seasonal parking passes, but there's plenty of free parking for the rest of us at satellite lots.  The most convenient location for Crofton residents is the Harry S. Truman Park & Ride, off Riva Road.
Free shuttle service begins five (5) hours prior to kickoff and drops riders off in front of the Navy Ticket Office at the Class of 1953 Pavilion. Shuttles run about 20 … (4 comments)

Tickets available for the Baltimore Grand Prix this weekend. - 09/02/11 10:24 AM
The neighboring city of Baltimore, Maryland, has spent months getting ready for the 2011 Inaugural Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend.  The event will certainly transform the peaceful scene of this photo, as visitors storm the city to take part in the excitement and see the unimaginable - cars moving at 180 mph through the streets of Baltimore!
Weekend tickets and Sunday-only tickets are sold out, but Crofton residents can still get reserved tickets for Saturday or unreserved tickets for the Paddock and Grounds. All the parking passes are sold out, and there are so many detours and road closures … (4 comments)

Odenton, Maryland - Calling all real estate investors! - 09/01/11 08:49 AM
Calling all real estate investors! There aren't many places in this country with greater investment potential than Odenton, Maryland.
Odenton is home to Fort George G. Meade/NSA and about 21,000 households.  It was originally an agricultural area, and became a railroad town early in the 20th century.  Today, it is a suburb of both Baltimore and Washington, D.C. - still tied to its railroad tradition in a new role, as a commuting stop along the MARC route, and fortunate to be the destination for thousands of new jobs under BRAC 2005.
The real estate market flourished in Odenton during the 1990's, … (0 comments)
