andrews afb: What makes a "Military Specialist" different from any other agent? - 09/25/11 10:53 AM
A columnist for The Washington Times contacted me last week for an article she is writing, and this is the question she asked me: What makes you a military specialist? Of course, any agent can work with a relocating military family, whether they're coming or going. And most of those transactions will be successful. However, many military families prefer to work with a so-called "military specialist." There's no professional designation or rulebook for real estate agents to be considered a "military specialist" but there may be certain expectations on the part of service members and their spouses. My military clients tell

andrews afb: Spacious Crofton Colonial on 2 Acres for Rent - 12/15/10 07:43 AM
Not many homes in the Crofton area are located on 2 acres, so it's a rare opportunity when one becomes available for rent. If you're relocating to the Baltimore-Washington area, your timing couldn't be better. Three military installations are located within a half hour - Fort George G. Meade, Andrews AFB, and the U.S. Naval Academy - not to mention the various U.S. Government offices in D.C. (just a little farther but still an easy commute). Maryland public schools are ranked #1 in the nation, and recreation opportunities abound in nearby Annapolis, Baltimore and D.C. Now you can enjoy it all

andrews afb: VA Mortgage Loan After A Short Sale - 09/15/10 09:44 PM
Many of our home-buyers in the area around Fort Meade, Andrews AFB, and the Naval Station Annapolis are either active duty military or veterans. And some of them are asking whether they can buy again after a short sale. North Carolina mortgage lender Eleanor Thorne does a great job of answering this question in the following blog post (re-blogged here with her permission). Thanks, Eleanor! andrews afb: Crofton Area Military Families Save $$$ Shopping at Commissary - 06/24/10 04:46 PM
Military families who live in Crofton are just a half hour from three different military commissaries: Naval Station Annapolis, Fort Meade, and Andrews AFB. (...Not to mention other family-friendly facilities at these three locations.) It's so easy to be lazy and shop at the nearest grocery store - I did that sometimes even when Larry was on active-duty and we were (always financially challenged) young newlyweds. Since he retired, we've seldom shopped at the commissaries even though we have that option. My refrigerator and cabinets were very empty today, so I needed some staples as well as the week's groceries. That

andrews afb: CROFTON HIGHLANDS - Affordable Homes Near Fort Meade - 06/20/10 12:23 PM
Homes in Crofton Highlands rarely change hands. This small neighborhood of 50 homes, located on the North side of Rt. 424 (Davidsonville Road), is across from Old Crofton and backing to Crofton Meadows. Washington, DC and Baltimore are easily accessible via major commuting routes, and major employers such as Fort Meade, NSA, Andrews AFB, Northrop Grumman, BWI, USNA and Maryland State Government offices in Annapolis are within a half hour. When I mentioned "rarely change hands", I wasn't exaggerating... Only five new families have purchased homes in Crofton Highlands since 2006. This seems like a pretty good indication that anyone living

andrews afb: A Tour of Local Public Schools for Crofton Newbies - 06/03/10 06:00 PM
Homebuyers relocating to the D.C. - Baltimore - Annapolis Triangle, including military families headed to Fort Meade, Andrews AFB and the USNA, often discover the greater Crofton area for the first time when they start digging into the quality of schools throughout the region. It's hard to find anything "not to like" about Arundel H.S., South River H.S., and their respective feeder systems in Crofton, Davidsonville, and Gambrills. Of course, any school or even classroom is only as good as the individual principal and teacher at that moment, so you're bound to find some exceptions anywhere, but I can't imagine

andrews afb: Bowie MD - Affordable Homes For Military Families - 04/05/10 11:08 AM
TOP THREE REASONS MILITARY FAMILIES CHOOSE BOWIE: If you have PCS orders for duty in the D.C. area, you're probably both excited about the opportunity and nervous about the cost of living. Even though I grew up in the area, that's exactly how my husband and I felt when we were faced with a move from San Diego CA to Annapolis, where he would teach at the U.S. Naval Academy. One of the first places we looked for a home was Bowie MD, and here's why: 1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - Bowie MD is less than a half hour to

andrews afb: PINEY ORCHARD in Odenton MD - 07/26/09 09:50 AM
As I mentioned yesterday in the first post of my series about Affordable Homes Near Fort Meade, you'll find lots of different options beyond the Fort Meade gates if you prefer to live off-post. In fact, there are many desirable communities in five nearby counties: Anne Arundel, Howard, Prince George's, Montgomery and Baltimore Counties. Two nearby communities in Odenton usually top the wish-list for military and civilian personnel relocating to Fort Meade and NSA, however, so we're looking at them first: SEVEN OAKS (yesterday) and PINEY ORCHARD (below). Chances are good you'll find your next home without looking any further!

andrews afb: Housing Relief for Military Families - 03/13/09 07:59 AM
Military families stationed at Fort Meade, Andrews AFB, the U.S. Naval Academy and other military installations in the Crofton area and throughout the D.C.-Baltimore region will be glad to learn they may now be eligible for relief to their housing woes, compliments of the recent stimulus package. It comes in an expansion to the Homeowners Assistance Program (HAP). administered by the Army Corps of Engineers. The program was intended initially to assist military homeowners affected by base closings under BRAC 2005. It has since been extended to help those affected by the credit and foreclosure debacle, and now it will also help

andrews afb: A New Look for Maryland Terps - 09/21/08 07:58 PM
Included in Your Online Relocation Package for Anne Arundel County, Maryland - Home of Fort George G. Meade, NSA, Northrop Grumman, BWI, and the U.S. Naval Academy. Terps football has a new look this year, and I'm not talking about their uniforms, stadium, players or coaches. (Although a huge addition to Tyser Tower is under construction.) During the three decades we have been season ticket holders for Maryland Football, I don't remember ever seeing so many BIG plays in a single game as we saw yesterday. Not even the three years they (and we) went to bowl games. This new look is almost enough to make

andrews afb: An ActiveRain Referral That Made EVERYONE Happy! - 07/29/08 12:41 PM
Jim and Ellen Crawford, of RE/MAX Greater Atlanta, contacted me a few months ago about a prospective listing in Bowie, Maryland. We kept in touch, as weeks went by, since the seller wasn't quite ready to make the commitment to sell her home of 40 years. Finally, the "okay" came, and I contacted the seller and her daughter, a friend of Jim and Ellen's who was helping her mother prepare for relocation to North Carolina. My husband and I went by a few days before the scheduled listing appointment so I could take some exterior photos and we were pleasantly surprised

andrews afb: Belair at Bowie - A Levitt and Sons Community - 04/04/08 08:28 PM
Relocating to the Washington-Baltimore area from another part of the country? You may notice that many Bowie homes are similar to other neighborhoods in Maryland including nearby Crofton, Largo, Laurel, Columbia and Wheaton. In fact, Belair at Bowie may resemble a place you previously lived in New York or New Jersey, Virginia or Pennsylvania - literally hundreds of communities, with many of the same floorplans and architectural designs, were built in hundreds of communities by Levitt and Sons. In fact, the company is still in business as Levitt Corporation, 36 years after the family company was sold. Few current Bowie residents are old enough to remember Pete Seeger's hit recording in 1963, Little Boxes, but

PCS moves are a fact of life for the families of U.S. military personnel. That's why I created this directory of real estate agents and lenders across the country who live and work near Air Force bases in the Continental United States. Of course, even more important to you is the fact they WANT to work with military personnel to make relocation into your new community as smooth and pleasant as possible for your entire family. These real estate professionals are local experts who can answer your questions about neighborhoods, schools, home prices, shopping, organized sports, restaurants and shopping in the area around your new post. andrews afb: New to Andrews AFB? - 12/13/07 07:58 AM
If Andrews Air Force Base is your next duty station, let me be one of the first to welcome you to Maryland. Whether you are enlisted, a newly commissioned officer, a General, or anyone in between - you probably already checked out the website for Andrews, so I won't attempt to tell you about the base or its services. Instead, let me tell you a little about the surrounding area and five critical steps for you to take BEFORE arriving to buy a home. Andrews AFB is located outside Washington, D.C. in Prince George's County, and within a half hour of Anne Arundel and Charles Counties. Howard and Montgomery Counties are also

andrews afb: MD Title Company waives fees for military homebuyers - 07/06/07 11:49 AM
Active duty military personnel buying a home in Maryland are NOT taken for granted by Capitol Title, with offices in Annapolis Crofton, Dunkirk, Ellicott City, Ocean City, Rockville, Severna Park, and Suitland. Inspired by Joe Long's blog that I read earlier this morning, about an article he saw at a title company, I looked around the reception area this morning before a settlement and found a flier about the company's "FREEdom" Program. I'm so proud to do business with a company that has a policy like this, I just have to share: In recognition of the hardships experienced by today's brave young troops and their
