crofton: Have You Been Newk'd? - 08/18/14 01:21 AM
"Have you been Newk'd?" is a phrase making its way around Crofton, Maryland, as more and more people discover a new dining option in The Village at Waugh Chapel known as Newk's Eatery.
It's a question I asked a friend yesterday and she had not even heard of Newk's but, sure enough, she was intrigued when I said that it was an upscale sandwich, soup, and salad eatery. We met there for lunch at 12:30, encountered no line to place our order, and the meals were promptly delivered to our table.
It was definitely a 5-star lunch experience!

I ordered the Triple Take salad, described … (4 comments)

crofton: New Wellness Center Opens at Fort Meade - 09/18/13 06:20 AM
New Wellness Center Opens at Fort Meade
Members of Maryland's Congressional Delegation were on hand Monday for the opening of Fort Meade's new Wellness Center. Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin and Rep. Paul Sarbanes were on the post, and missed all the drama in Washington, D.C. when the U.S. Senate was locked down after the Navy Yard shooting. The House of Representatives did not lock down, but additional security measures were taken at the U.S. Capital and other Government facilities in Washington, including Fort Meade in nearby Maryland.
The new Wellness Center, located in the former Medal of Honor Memorial … (3 comments)

crofton: How Do Crofton Area Housing Statistics Compare to National News? - 08/28/10 03:30 AM
Bowie, Crofton, Crownsville, Davidsonville, Gambrills and Odenton, Maryland real estate sales don't always match what you see in the media.
"REAL ESTATE SALES DOWN 27%" read the headlines and led the TV news reports earlier this week.
Was anyone surprised that closings in July were down, since home buyers were bribed into closing in June with an $8,000 tax credit?  Anyone who planned to buy a home this summer (maybe even this year) had big incentive to advance their timetable and buy a home in time to close before June 30.  OF COURSE, home sales were down in July - at … (14 comments)

crofton: Are You Waiting for the Crofton MD Real Estate Market to Improve? - 08/07/10 02:23 AM
The Crofton real estate market may be sluggish, but it's NOT dead.
Eight homes went under contract in Old Crofton last month (July 2010) and twenty more went under contract in other areas of the community.  Five of these 28 homes have already settled and another twenty-one contracts are either firm (no contingency) or contingent without a kick-out.  Only two are contingent sales with a kick-out.  So let me ask a question:

Are you…
Dreaming of a retirement home by the water?
Feeling cramped in your first home, now that you have three children?
Tired of sharing the bathroom?
No … (9 comments)

crofton: Hermitage - An Upscale Community Near Crofton - 09/22/09 12:15 AM

As you leave Crofton and head east on Route 450 towards Annapolis, you'll spot this entrance into the community of Hermitage - a community of 62 custom-built homes on spacious lots.
You can see from these photos that Hermitage is not a "one size fits all" community... in fact you'll find homes and settings for every taste, from colonials to ranchers, tudors to contemporary, and wooded to open space.  Yet it's not a hodge-podge, either, because the homes are far apart on winding and sloping roads that seamlessly take you past one home to the next.
There are no … (7 comments)

crofton: Crofton, Gambrills, and Odenton - One Community or Three? - 10/12/08 12:47 PM
"The Greater Crofton Area" is generally considered to include Crofton, Gambrills, and Odenton - three distinctly different communities located in the D.C.-Baltimore-Annapolis Triangle. (And, I might add, there are distinctly different neighborhoods within each community.)  Some of the confusion probably comes from the nonsensical zipcode boundaries created by the U.S. Post Office for Crofton.
Just picture a donut:  Gambrills is like the donut itself, and Crofton is the hole in the center.  Odenton is north and west of Crofton and Gambrills, but I couldn't tell you where one stops and the other starts.
Adding to the confuson:
Crofton Centre (retail shopping) is located in Gambrills. Crofton Farms and … (6 comments)

Maryland home buyers, this is one of those lessons learned from The School of Hard Knocks:  Find and set aside important paperwork and financial information BEFORE you start packing to move!  I've seen firsthand the unnecessary pressure and tension some of my relocating clients experienced when they failed to do this.
Yes, financing a home is so much easier today than it was a decade ago.  In many cases, through an automated underwriting process, home buyers receive their "ok" within hours of making application.  Sometimes, however, this loan approval requires follow-up … (9 comments)

crofton: Crofton Maryland Flu Shot Locations - 10/16/07 11:13 PM
A community announcement for Crofton, MD, posted to Localism.com and FocusOnCrofton.com.
Flu shots seem to be widely available this year, and I have found three locations in Crofton where you can conveniently get yours:  Giant, CVS, and Rite-Aid.
Mark your calendar for November 3.  That's the next time you will be able to get your annual flu shot at the Giant in Crofton.  (For a complete listing of Giant grocery stores where you can get flu shots, click here.)
Two local drugstores are offering flu shots, as well:  The CVS website indicates that flu shots are available daily at the Crofton location, 2003 Davidsonville Road;  RiteAid, at … (3 comments)

crofton: Crofton Maryland Real Estate Report - January-September 2007 - 10/13/07 12:48 PM
There was good news and bad news for Crofton in September, according to statistics released by Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, Inc., combined with my own quick review of homes listed, sold, and under contract during that time.
Let's start with the GOOD news:

The average sold price in Crofton was up 11.25% from last year to $398,371.  The median price was the same as it was in September 2006, $330,000.

crofton: Anne Arundel County Leaf Pick-up - 10/04/07 01:37 AM

With so many trees in some areas of Anne Arundel County, you may be wondering what to do with all those leaves when they start to fall.  My first word of advice would be to mulch them with your lawn mower, when there are only a few.  But there will come a time when you and your family are likely to spend some quality family time together raking your yard.
Leaf pick-up in Anne Arundel County occurs on your regular re-cycling day, assuming you have Anne Arundel County trash pick-up.  Some condo or home-owner associations may have private trash and recycling contractors, however, and … (4 comments)

crofton: The Long Arm of the Internet - 09/30/07 02:11 AM
Most of us on ActiveRain have discovered the power of the Internet - in fact, that is one of the things that attracted us to this network.
We've seen it evidenced in referrals to and from other ActiveRainers, and perhaps even direct contact from relocating consumers.  We have even gone out of our way to meet new ActiveRain friends when we travel to other parts of the country.
One individual recently discovered the long arm of the Internet, too, when library workers in Marianna Black Library in Bryson City, North Carolina, read an email about a missing child and his non-custodial parent.  They thought the … (25 comments)

crofton: Crofton MD Real Estate - Market Report for July 2007 - 08/10/07 04:31 AM
CROFTON MD 21114
Crofton home prices dropped in July, putting her in good company with communities across the nation (although the number of homes sold in July 2007 exceeded those in 2006).  The news is particularly discouraging, given that the current mortgage market debacle is not reflected in last month's statistics.  Given the downward direction in prices for July, continually expanding inventory, and now the tightening of mortgage criteria, sellers and buyers alike could be in for some tough times for the remainder of the year.
Yet, as you can see from this chart, the difference in Crofton's average sold price from last year has not … (4 comments)

CROFTON MD 21114

My dad always said that a golf course is the best place to raise children, and I have to echo his sentiment.   A child who runs home from school to get his golf clubs and practice is not hanging out in an alley experimenting with drugs.  An adolescent or teen who plays 18 or 36 holes of golf a day, virtually from dawn 'til dark, is too tired to stay out late at night … (5 comments)

Maryland real estate may experience a slight "boom" now that word is out about what a great place it is to live!

Money's list of Top 100 Best Places to Live 2007 includes five Maryland communities:   Crofton (72), Catonsville (49), Eldersburg (56), Elkridge (42), and Olney (17).  Communities around the country were ranked for a variety of factors that impact quality of life including affordability, leisure activities, cultural options, job growth, health care access, commute time, and even the weather.  Of course, that's no … (2 comments)

crofton: If Dracula's castle was YOUR listing... - 07/03/07 10:38 AM
Crofton real estate is pretty tame - nothing like this property, currently on the market for sale:

One of literature's most famous vampires must be turning over in his grave because his favorite haunt (pun intended) is on the market for sale.
MarketWatch.com, RIS Media and the Associated Press, among others, are reporting that Bran Castle, the Romanian landmark owned by Archduke Dominic Habsburg and his family, is available for development.   Baytree Capital, a New York investment firm, is offering the property at a mere $100 million.  You can click through to these links to read all about it.

crofton: Agents are supposed to provide solutions, not obstacles - 06/12/07 12:37 AM
I've run into several agents lately who clearly do not have any idea how to function in a Buyer's Market and who are downright arrogant - they demonstrate no interest in learning; no willingness to adjust to today's marketplace; and, frankly, they are contributing to the high inventory because they provide obstacles, not solutions, to their clients... or on behalf of their clients.
I believe that ActiveRain agents are probably the best in the profession, as evidenced by our eagerness to learn and share and participate.  But who knows... maybe there's a thought or war story here that will help you think … (11 comments)

crofton: Crofton MD - Market Report for May 2007 - 06/10/07 05:16 AM
CROFTON MD 21114
Each month, when new sales statistics are published by the Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, Inc. (MRIS) - the multiple listing service for Crofton (21114) - the first thing I look at is the Total New Listings (76) and the Total New Contracts (41).  If these numbers are not close, then I can predict the future.  How, you might ask?  Well, it's a case of Supply and Demand.
If 76 property owners in Crofton put their homes on the market in a month when only 41 homebuyers elect to purchase a home, the inventory of homes for sale continues to grow.  … (0 comments)

crofton: Moving - Nuisance or Nightmare? - 05/31/07 08:33 AM
Most real estate transactions usually involve a move for our clients, and it is easy for real estate agents to forget that fact as we check off all the details we track from contract to closing.  It is fair to say that most agents think of closing as an ending, whereas it is just one of many many details related to our clients' moving experience.  While our clients expect their move to be a nuisance, they also fear that it could be a nightmare.
I'll never forget something that one of my mentors said to me about 30 years ago, in the early days of my real estate career:  Real … (1 comments)
