crofton md: Open House vs. Internet Marketing - 04/01/14 10:55 PM
Open House vs. Internet Marketing

HGTV would have you believe that "Open House" is the way to sell a home. Fans of the show know that a successful Open House is the goal of any home renovation prior to selling. An endless parade of prospective buyers walk through the Open House during the last five minutes of the show, raving about the scrumptious kitchen, spa-like bathroom, etc.
These shows generally conclude by saying how much everyone adored the complete makeover of the home that was performed over the first 25 minutes of the show. However, they rarely indicate that a contract of … (66 comments)

crofton md: You can't judge a home by its counter top - 07/29/13 09:50 PM
A granite counter top can be the defining factor in a home sale. How many times have you heard a buyer exclaim, "Oh look, this home has a granite counter top!" and realized this is the magic stamp of approval you've been waiting for. If the kitchen has a granite counter top, this home may now leap to the top of your client's list, and perhaps even to the laptop so you can start writing an offer.
On the other hand, a laminate or Corian counter top may be enough for your client to rule out a home that has the … (80 comments)

crofton md: Trash Pick-Up on President's Day in Crofton, MD - 02/17/13 12:34 AM
Tomorrow, February 18, is President's Day - a federal holiday.
The holiday was initially created by an Act of Congress in 1879 for the City of Washington, D.C. to honor George Washington on his February 22 birthday, but it became a federal holiday just six years later.  Another Act of Congress, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moved the celebration to the third Monday of February and also designated Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and Columbus Day (second Monday in October) to a Monday, so Federal workers could have more three-day weekends. While the holiday honoring George Washington's birthday was not … (1 comments)

crofton md: Crofton MD Divided into Four Congressional Districts - 11/04/12 11:57 PM
Crofton, Maryland, will feel the impact of the 2012 election, far beyond the choice of President. In particular, Question 5 confirms the division of Crofton into four different Congressional Districts. It reads as follows:
"Establishes the boundaries for the State’s eight United States Congressional Districts based on recent census figures, as required by the United States Constitution."
Since the wording of this Referendum Petition seems to make so much sense, it’s likely the new boundary lines will pass statewide.  Even if no one else votes against this measure, however, I do think that Crofton residents should send our State Legislature a message that … (1 comments)

crofton md: Military Discounts at 60 Annapolis Mall Stores and Eateries - 06/21/12 11:01 PM
Military personnel and families attached to Maryland military installations - including the U.S. Naval Academy, Fort Meade, Andrews AFB, and others - have good reason to shop and dine at Westfield Annapolis Mall. They are eligible for a discount at more than 60 retailers and eateries, upon presentation of their military I.D.
In most cases, these businesses don't advertise a military discount or even post a sign in their places of business.  I shudder to think how many hundreds of dollars in discounts I've been eligible to receive but faied to request over the past few years.
Take this list and your … (2 comments)

crofton md: What's Happening in the Crofton Real Estate Market? - 11/27/11 12:29 PM
Home sales remained relatively stable in Crofton, Maryland, between September and October. That's good news in a real estate market that has seen a lot of bouncing up and down over the past few years.
The inventory of homes didn't go down, however, because new SALE signs in Crofton seem to be as plentiful as autumn leaves. You can see for yourself from this graph (on the right), the number of new listings has been creeping up. On the flip side, the number of new listings (29) is down 14.71% compared to October 2010 (34).
For a comprehensive view of the … (4 comments)

crofton md: Self-Sustainable Housing - Myth or Reality? - 09/22/11 03:25 AM
Real  estate agents fancy ourselves as being "up" on the latest housing innovations. However, I doubt many of us could imagine a fully self-sustainable house that doesn't rely on public utility companies for energy.
But this is more than a myth... it's reality for 200 University of Maryland students who designed and built "Watershed" as their entry into the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, taking place this weekend on the National Mall.
Local real estate agents who have a few free hours might enjoy checking out this and 19 other entries.  I'm guessing you would leave with a lot of conversation … (7 comments)
