crofton md: What's Happening in the Crofton Real Estate Market? - 11/27/11 08:29 PM
Home sales remained relatively stable in Crofton, Maryland, between September and October. That's good news in a real estate market that has seen a lot of bouncing up and down over the past few years.
The inventory of homes didn't go down, however, because new SALE signs in Crofton seem to be as plentiful as autumn leaves. You can see for yourself from this graph (on the right), the number of new listings has been creeping up. On the flip side, the number of new listings (29) is down 14.71% compared to October 2010 (34).

crofton md: Self-Sustainable Housing - Myth or Reality? - 09/22/11 10:25 AM
Real  estate agents fancy ourselves as being "up" on the latest housing innovations. However, I doubt many of us could imagine a fully self-sustainable house that doesn't rely on public utility companies for energy.
But this is more than a myth... it's reality for 200 University of Maryland students who designed and built "Watershed" as their entry into the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, taking place this weekend on the National Mall.
Local real estate agents who have a few free hours might enjoy checking out this and 19 other entries.  I'm guessing you would leave with a lot of conversation … (7 comments)

crofton md: Tickets available for the Baltimore Grand Prix this weekend. - 09/02/11 10:24 AM
The neighboring city of Baltimore, Maryland, has spent months getting ready for the 2011 Inaugural Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend.  The event will certainly transform the peaceful scene of this photo, as visitors storm the city to take part in the excitement and see the unimaginable - cars moving at 180 mph through the streets of Baltimore!
Weekend tickets and Sunday-only tickets are sold out, but Crofton residents can still get reserved tickets for Saturday or unreserved tickets for the Paddock and Grounds. All the parking passes are sold out, and there are so many detours and road closures … (4 comments)

crofton md: Hurricane Irene knocks out trees in Crofton MD - 08/28/11 08:44 PM
Residents of Crofton, Maryland, were very fortunate during Hurricane Irene.  We didn't lose power and, as far as I know, there wasn't any major damage.  We did have some fallen branches and trees, but road crews were out early to clear most of them off the road.  The first photo was taken on my street when I left home about 10 a.m., but the tree was out of the street and its pieces were stacked nearby when I returned home an hour later.

crofton md: Crofton Kiwanis 10k Challenge on Saturday - 06/08/11 09:05 AM
The annual Kiwanis 10k on the Saturday before Father's Day is one of many Crofton traditions that make this community a special place to live.
The 23rd annual Kiwanis 10k Challenge will be held this Saturday, June 11, beginning at 8 a.m. at Crofton Country Club, circling Crofton Parkway and making a detour into the “E” section and the “S” sections.  My friends at Team Surlis of RE/MAX Leading Edge will co-sponsor the event, along with the Kiwanis Roundation, to raise money for local charities.  Chick-fil-A, Curves of Crofton, and Friends of Crofton Kiwanis will provide refreshments, which will include bagels, fruit and drinks.

crofton md: How to Find Answers to Your Real Estate Questions without Talking to a Real Estate Agent - 01/31/11 07:30 AM
The idea of buying or selling a home in Crofton MD, or Anywhere USA, is beginning to take shape in your mind.  Nothing definite yet... but you have some questions and you don't want to ask a real estate agent...
Finding the answer may be easier than you think.

CROFTON MD HOMEBUYERS and SELLERS asked these questions in January 2011:

What do those letters mean after an agent's name? Should renters get a home inspection? How are Maryland schools? How safe is it to have a lockbox on my front door? Why do I need a buyer-broker agreement? Will … (11 comments)

crofton md: Should I Buy New Construction or a Resale? - 01/30/11 11:26 PM
Q,  We're struggling with whether to buy new construction or a resale.  What's your opinion?
A.  Military families relocating to Fort Meade, Andrews AFB and the USNA often ask me about buying a new home.  They've learned through experience, I guess, that resale of a 3-4 year old home is easier in some parts of the country than an older home the next time they get PCS orders.
Just one problem... we don't have a lot of new construction in the greater Crofton area and you will severely limit your options if you don't consider more established neighborhoods.  You'll find there … (2 comments)

crofton md: I have hardwood flooring underneath my carpet. Should I refinish the hardwood or recarpet? - 01/30/11 07:22 AM
Q.  Should I refinish the hardwood or recarpet?
A.  If you live in the Crawford section of "Old Crofton" in Crofton MD - the E's, F's, and D's - beautiful hardwood flooring may be hiding under your carpet.  Rather than replace that carpet, consider exposing those floors.

We did that in our previous home on Elwyn Avenue, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the results.  Yes, they had to be refinished due to damage from carpet strips around the edge, but we were very pleased with our decision to make the investment... and the buyers of our home … (5 comments)

crofton md: It's Beer Week in Baltimore, Maryland - 10/10/10 08:12 AM
Traffic will be heavy in Baltimore MD today, with a 1 p.m. Ravens game against the Broncos and the kickoff of BEER WEEK in Baltimore.  Crofton residents will want to get an early start, because the usual 30-minute drive is likely to become a bottleneck as you get closer to the city.  In fact, I recommend you consider taking the light rail from BWI.
This entire week will be a college kid's version of heaven... over 300 events going on throughout the city to celebrate the 2nd annual Baltimore Beer Week, through October 17, including Beer Breakfasts, Beer Lunches, Beer Tasting, … (15 comments)

crofton md: Crofton Craft Fair - Fun Things To Do in Crofton MD - 09/22/10 08:21 AM

It should be mostly sunny and 80 degrees on Saturday for the Crofton Craft Fair at Crofton Country Club, in the heart of Old Crofton.
The event is held twice a year by the Crofton Town Club (formerly the Crofton Newcomers Club) on the last Saturday of September and April.  It's a long-standing community tradition that you don't want to miss.
Come on down and check out the local community organizations and crafters between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., rain or shine.
If you happen to notice the aroma of barbeque chicken, just follow your nose to the north parking … (8 comments)

crofton md: Something to R.A.V.E. About - in D.C. This Week - 09/19/10 02:12 PM
One of the best things about living in Crofton, Maryland, is its convenience to both D.C. and Baltimore.  There is always something going on, and usually MANY somethings going on in both cities.
This coming week, The Rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. will house an exhibit of photographs taken this past summer across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.  This is the culmination of a summer-long project in which the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) partnered with the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP) to highlight the Chesapeake Clean Water Act (CCWA) through photographs, video, and stories.  The project … (8 comments)

crofton md: Target, Petco, Wegmans, Dicks and Other Retailers Coming to Crofton - 08/21/10 10:34 PM
The Crofton area is about to see some major changes with the construction of Village South at Waugh Chapel in Gambrills.
I can just imagine what that complex will do to traffic on Route 3 between Crofton and Severna Park, can’t you?
Things have certainly changed around here since we moved to our first Crofton home in 1970.  We really didn’t mind a bit that buying groceries or filling up the car with gas required a drive to Bowie.

I happened to be serving on the Crofton Civic Association Board of Directors when developers proposed the retail centers where Giant and … (21 comments)

crofton md: Rolling Thunder in DC for Annual Motorcycle Rally - 05/28/10 03:00 PM
Don't be surprised to see a few more motorcycles than usual today and throughout this weekend on the D.C. Beltway and other major arteries, as Veterans travel to DC for the Memorial Day motorcycle rally known as ROLLING THUNDER.

This annual demonstration was the brainchild of Vietnam Vet Ray Manzo, Corporal USMC, who rallied the support of retired Army Sergeant Major John Holland, head of the American Foundation for Accountability of POW/MIAs, Ted Sampley with Homecoming II Project at the Last Firebase vigil, retired Marine 1st Sergeant Walt Sides, president of the non-profit Warriors Inc, and Bob Schmitt who had … (13 comments)

crofton md: Last Minute Crunch for Tax Credit Fuels 38 Home Sales in Crofton Area - 04/30/10 06:52 AM
Real Estate Sales since April 15 in the “Greater Crofton Area” – i.e., Crofton, Davidsonville, Gambrills & Odenton – seem to indicate that the tax credit has brought home buyers out of the woodwork.  And it wasn’t just the first-time buyers who were home-shopping.
Homes listed from $167,900 – $799,900 found new prospective owners between April 15 and April 25:
Crofton: 13 homes went under contract, including 8 contingencies and 5 firm contracts.  6 are detached homes, 1 is a condo, and the remaining 6 are townhomes.  List prices ranged from $199,800 to $624,900.  Still on the market are 154 other homes for buyers … (1 comments)
