domestic partners: Cooperatives Will Soon Be Subject to Transfer and Recordation Taxes - 07/06/09 12:42 PM
Historically, cooperatives have been exempt from paying a transfer and a recordation tax upon sale. Beginning October 1, 2009, the transfer of shares in a cooperative will be taxed by the District of Columbia. The current tax rate is 1.45% of the sales price for cooperatives selling for $400,000 or more. If the price is under $400,000, the tax is 1.1% of the sales price. Even if you're not planning to sell your unit, you could be subject to the transfer and recordation tax if you plan to add someone to your shares after September 30, 2009. Adding

domestic partners: District of Columbia Expands Right of Benefits of Domestic Partnerships - 06/12/08 06:50 AM
The District of Columbia expanded it's Domestic Partnership Law when the Council passed the "Omnibus Domestic Partnership Equality Amendment Act of 2008." The law adds 39 new provisions to the law that extend most of the rights and benefits of marriage to registered domestic partners. The new rights and benefits that apply to real property include: Amends “An Act” to establish a code of law for the District of Columbia to permit domestic partners to hold property as tenants by the entirety and to revise the deed forms to include domestic partners. domestic partners: DC Domestic Partners May File Joint Tax Returns for 2007 - 01/06/08 12:21 PM
Beginning this year, registered Domestic Partners may file joint tax returns in the District of Columbia. Bill 16-958, the Domestic Partnerships Joint Filing Act of 2006, became law on Wednesday, March 14, 2007. Couples registered as domestic partners in D.C., who must still file as single on federal forms, may file their 2007 taxes jointly in 2008 under the new law. With the adoption of the Domestic Partnership Equality Amendment Act of 2006, registered domestic partners in the District of Columbia gained many of the same rights as a spouse (see list below). Pertaining to real estate, the rights gained for those who register are the same rights as spouses including: mortgages, inheritance, devises or bequests of real estate, rights for the purpose of probate Domestic Partnership Equality Amendment Act of 2006, D.C. If registered Domestic Partners transfer a property between themselves, that transfer is not subject to DC's transfer and recordation taxes. domestic partners: Domestic Partnerships and mortgages and deeds of trust - 01/06/08 11:59 AM
Domestic partners in the District of Columbia must sign on mortgages and deeds of trust even if they are not listed on the loan. The Domestic Partnership Equality Amendment Act of 2006: DC Code Section 15-502, states that “A mortgage, deed of trust, assignment for the benefit of creditors, or bill of sale upon exempted articles is not binding or valid unless it is signed by the spouse or domestic partner of a debtor who is living with his or her spouse or domestic partner.” A domestic partnership must be registered with the DC Department of Health.
