southwest dc: Waterfront Station Construction Update (Formerly Waterside Mall) in Southwest DC - 11/05/08 12:47 PM
The construction of the new Waterfront Station in Southwest DC is continuing. The developer recently secured $250 million for construction financing The first two new buildings are now above grade and noticeable as one passes by. The new Waterfront Station will reconnect 4th Street SW which was closed when the Waterside Mall was built decades ago. The path of the new 4th Street SW is visible in the photo below. 4th Street will curve around the existing Metrorail station. southwest dc: $198 Million Approved by DC Council for Southwest Waterfront - 07/15/08 07:42 AM
The DC Council approved $198 million to fund the infrastructure needed for the$1.5 billion Waterfront renovation project. PN Hoffman and Struever Brothers are the master developers for the project which could create 770 housing units, 700,000 square feet of offices, three hotels, 280,000 square feet of retail and 150,000 square feet of cultural attractions, as well as parks and four new piers. southwest dc: National Stadium Opens - Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 03/23/08 07:50 AM
The new Nationals Stadium will open on Sunday, March 30th. While the game begins at 8pm, events celebrating the opening will begin at 3pm. Residents in the area began receiving Visitor Parking Permits in the mail as the parking restrictions in Capitol Riverfront and Southwest DC has changed. Many streets are resident parking only now. Many other streets are two-hour limited parking even on the weekends. The President will be throwing out the first ball, so Secret Service will be handling security. The first game will be the first chance for local residents to see how visitors find the stadium and park. ---

Opening ceremonies for the 2007 AIDS Walk Washington will be on 10/6/2007 at Freedom Plaza beginning at 9am. The AIDS Walk route leaving Freedom Plaza via Pennyslvania Avenue. It turns onto 4th Street and crosses into Southwest DC, loops around on D Street SW, and back up 4th Street to Pennyslvania Avenue to Freedom Plaza. Waterfront Mall has posted signs announcing the closing of the mall in preparation for it's demolition to re-open 4th Street SW. The closing is anticipated to happen between 9/8 - 9/15/2007. The District will be renting 500,000 square feet of office space in new buildings to be built along the portion of 4th Street SW to be reopened. During the construction the Safeway will remain open in its present location. Both CVS and Bank of America will relocate into temporary buildings that have bee erected on the south parking lot.
