butchertown: Visit Butchertown Market in one of AOL’s Hottest Neighborhoods - 01/25/11 05:35 PM

If your idea of a great time is to take in some historic Louisville architecture, enjoy interesting shopping, and conclude the day with the best food and drink in Louisville, then you should head to the Butchertown Market.  Right across from the Swift Company, Butchertown Market is one of things that make Butchertown one of AOL's hottest neighborhoods.
Housed in an old leather tanning factory which in turn housed the  Magic Flake Soap Company, the Lampton Paint Company and then the Caudill Seed Company, the building at 1201 Story Avenue was bought by the Jakeland company in 1997.  Under the … (0 comments)

butchertown: Smokin' Mad in Butchertown - 11/13/10 05:42 PM
There was a time in Butchertown history when a large part of the pedestrian traffic down Story Avenue was the hogs enroute to the processing plant.  Meat packing gave the neighborhood its name, but in recent years, the residents and visitors who patronize the restaurants and galleries in the neighborhood don't like the noise and odors emanating from the plant.  For over 10 years, the company, JBS Swift, and the Butchertown Neighborhood Association have been at odds.
In 2009, the Association asked Swift to stop making some improvements, including building a hog chute to facilitate moving the 10,000 hogs slaughtered each … (0 comments)

butchertown: Has the Best Time to Sell Your Louisville Home This Year Passed? - 10/05/10 05:30 PM
If you're sitting on your porch in Louisville, you may be enjoying today's 70° weather, but fall is coming, then the winter.  If you would like to sell your home and move to a new one, you may lament that the time to do it for this year may have passed.  After all, real estate season traditionally winds down when kids go back to school, right?  Wrong.  Homes can actually sell in any season.
Traditionally, there may be more people looking in the spring and summer, but there is always traffic from people who are transferred into a great city … (3 comments)

butchertown: More On Butchertown! - 08/29/10 10:16 AM
The Louisville neighborhood known as Butchertown was the site of the area's first gristmill back in 1796 but later German immigrants, who established the area as a meat packing center in the late 1820's, gave the neighborhood its colorful name.  Modern-day Butchertown has expanded beyond its historic roots; revitalization efforts over the last 20 years have made it an exciting location for young professionals.
Where is it?  Butchertown is east of downtown Louisville, bounded by I-65, Main Street, I-71, Beargrass Creek and Mellwood Ave.  Its proximity to a major turnpike (now Frankfort and Story avenues) and the creek was what made … (0 comments)
