Sleepers Island is not named this because it is a good place to
take a nap. No, the name sake is for George Sleeper who purchased
the Island in the mid 1800's. The Island passed through many hands
until it was sold to a develpoer in 1962.

The Island formed an association to provide fire protection and to purchase
the interoir acreage to preserve it for all residents to enjoy. there is a 2mile
hiking trail and also used for fire access.

The Sleeper Island Association costs $55.00 year, and allows the member
a vote on by laws, and an invitation to the meetings, where there is always
wine and cheese social to get it started off.

As you can see Sleeper Island is a special place to live, and
offers a wonderful since of community.

A brief history of Governor's Island

Governor's Island is located just off the shore of Gilford NH. It was first turned from a farming community to a resort when the island was purchased by Stilson Hutchins the founder of the Washnington Post, in 1880.

Stilson built a mansion made of Granite on the summit of the island, and the location had a majestic views of the Lake Winnipesaukee and the NH mountains. Hutchins legacy is the creation of the roads on Governor's Island, that are still in use today, and made development of the shore line possible. The whos who of the world were invited to the mansion, and the reputation of Lake Winnipesaukee as the resort playground of the North East was firmly established by dignitaries spreading the word about it.

In 1928 Island was sold to Clifford Hayes who attempted to turn it into a class A resort. Unfortunatly the mansion burned in 1934, and put the venture into foreclosure.

An association of islanders was formed and called the Governor's Island Club . The stone barn that was left of the mansion grounds was purchased from the bank the association and was restored and turned into the recreational center still in use today.

since the 1960's to the 90's the Island homes grew to over 150.

Property values have increased by over 400% over the past 50 years. Governer's Island homes are still increasing in value regardless of the recient housing crisis due to the fact that the island is unique and is the most sought after real estate on Lake Winnipesaukee.
