MIGRATING SHOREBIRDS are visible in many locations throughout Cape May County at this time of year. Mid-August through mid-September are peak times for spotting birds as they travel southward, with Cape May County’s geography acting as a funnel for birds preparing to cross Delaware Bay, increasing the number of birds visible compared to other areas. Stone Harbor Point is a great location for spotting birds, and so is Avalon’s north-end, where First Avenue and Avalon Avenue hit the seawall. Grab your binoculars or camera and have a look! The perfect way to cool off on a hot August afternoon! SAILOR’S DELIGHT! For those (0 comments)
AN OCEAN DRIVE PROJECT between 29th and 62nd Streets in Avalon is anticipated next spring. The county project would bring that section of the roadway into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act with new sidewalks, and also elevate the roadway to help alleviate flooding and improve drainage. Work is anticipated to begin in March 2017, breaking in June for the summer season, and then resuming in September.

Avalon/Stone Harbor NJ Weekly Update July 14th, 2016 THE OCEAN WATER has had a tropical, turquoise look to it for the past week and a half, thanks to a combination of factors. Press of Atlantic City meteorologist Dan Skeldon has reported that recent ocean upwelling brought nutrient rich waters to the surface; a subsequent phytoplankton bloom reflects sunlight, giving the water its bright blue-green tropical look. Lack of recent rainfall and river run-off has kept water clarity high, adding to the look. Phytoplankton are invisible to the naked eye, and harmless to swimmers and the ocean ecology. AVALON’S BEACHES are now ready to go for the summer season after a major sand backpassing project was completed last weekend. 55,000 cubic yards of sand were scraped from the 32nd to 38th Street beaches and moved to north-end beaches to replenish them. Erosion from winter storms had moved the sand southward; the backpassing project returned it to its point of origin. Rather than put the project out for bid, the work was performed by the Avalon Department of Public Works, which rented heavy equipment for the job. A major beachfill project is anticipated prior to the 2017 season.
A pair of dump trucks move along Avalon’s beach on a rainy day, as Avalon’s sand “backpassing” project continues. THE BOROUGH OF STONE HARBOR received the Cape May County Annual Conservation Award for its efforts in restoring the gardens in the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, and those around the pump house at 114th Street & Third Avenue. Native plants requiring little water were used, and they’ll help meet the needs of species living in and around the area. HOBIE CATS and other sail craft have long lined the beach at Stone Harbor’s southern end—but not this year. Council passed a resolution to refund sail craft storage fees to those who have already paid them. Damage from recent storms has left that area of the beach unsuitable for sail craft. Mayor Suzanne Walters said the borough looked into using other areas of the beach, but that it “will not work this year.”
