green: The Farmer in the ... City? - 07/15/09 07:01 PM
You wouldn't think of an urban downtown as a likely location to meet a bunch of farmers, but 'tain't so in Albuquerque!
Every Saturday morning, from a bright-and-early 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Robinson Park right in Downtown Albuquerque is the site of the Albuquerque Downtown Growers' Market. (OK, I know that's mighty early to be up on a Saturday morning, but hey, if you want to meet real live farmers you'll need to get up with the chickens!)
This weekly, open-air market features 100% locally grown New Mexico produce-- to qualify, fruits and vegetables must have been grown within 60 … (2 comments)

green: Learned from Twitter: How to tell genetically modified food! - 07/11/09 03:38 PM
Did you know that there is a quick and easy way to tell whether the fruits or vegetables you buy are genetically modified?

I didn't. In fact, I've thought for a long time that the government should require GM food to be clearly labeled as such. One of the folks I follow on Twitter tweeted yesterday that there actually IS as way to tell, quickly and easily, and provided a link to all the details. A big thank you to "jandreadis" for the tip, an for the full scoop, see www.plantea.com/genetically-modified-food.html )

green: All-Green, and Gold-Certified Education... - 07/09/09 06:23 PM
New Mexicans can now get highly colorful "gold-certified" "green" education-- in the newly completed Pete V. Domenici Education Building at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM.
If that sounds color-cockeyed, here's the scoop:
"Green" refers to the building being environmentally friendly.
The "gold certification" is a guarantee of just how green this building is-- it has been awarded the top environmental certification, LEED Gold, by the U.S. Green Building Council.
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson made the announcement last month, stressing the priority his administration has given to energy efficiency. In 2006, the governor signed an executive order requiring that … (0 comments)

green: Eating from the community garden - 06/29/09 02:00 PM
It's pretty much a no-brainer that eating local and organic food is best for one's physical health.

It's also a no-brainer that being involved with congenial friends in a tight-knit community is healthiest for one's emotional health.

Enter the "Community Garden."
Not all of us live out in the country with abundant land for a huge vegetable garden, nor are we all equipped with the knowledge of organic farming methods, or the time and inclination to spend loads of time alone with just nature for company.
The community garden enables anyone to get together, swap info, chat and visit … (2 comments)

green: Green Idea: Rainwater Catchment Systems! - 06/27/09 02:20 PM
I've always recognized that rainwater catchment systems are a great green idea, paraticularly in our arid New Mexico climate, but I always thought of them as being useful just for the recycling effect, and for supplementing a "normal" water source such as a well or city water. Then my husband took a new listing on a great mountain property whose owner has a highly efficent rainwater catchment system that provides for all the household water needs!
I did a little more checking around, and found that an efficient rainwater catchment system really can do more than give you a little extra water for your … (0 comments)

green: Coming Soon: Green Pets in Albuquerque! - 06/20/09 02:20 PM
OK, it's not the dogs and cats who will be changing color, but one of the places they're kept will be greener and more environmentally friendly!
Albuquerque is in the process of totally renovating its Eastside Animal Shelter. The 32,000 square foot center will be LEED Silver Certified*, and feature energy and water conservation and innovative uses for common building materials and building reuse. The project is set to open in early 2010, and will contain  a Spay/Neuter Clinic, Pet Adoption Center, plus expanded kennel and support spaces. There will also be  outdoor training and "get acquainted" areas to help future owners get … (1 comments)

green: Belen, NM Farmers Market - 09/10/08 04:50 PM
The small town of Belen, NM, half an hour south of Albuquerque, has a local Farmers Market every Friday afternoon and evening.

I love farmers' markets!

So last week I stopped by, and found some great, really fresh local produce, plus home-made jams and jellies, all-natural, locally made soaps, raw honey (completely local, of course!) and even roasted sweet corn, prepared fresh, on-site!

Buying local is the green and eco-friendly thing to do, and the offerings at the Belen Farmers' Market included lots of organic and all-natural options, making this an even "greener" option for local residents!
