valencia county: Belen Saves on Energy Bill with Solar Dishes - 03/24/10 12:34 PM
Currently, the dishes are not operating on weekends or holidays, due to a lack of off-site operation capabilities. However, according to DeCamillo, the city will save even more once the dishes begin operating 7 days a week.Since January, Belen has seen $1,000 savings on its electric bill, thanks to its new solar dishes, installed last July. By the end of the year, officials estimate the dishes will save almost 50 percent on the city's electric bill-- that's nearly $20,000.
According to Andrew DeCamillo, planning and zoning director for Belen, "The money ... goes into a general fund for other expenses … (0 comments)

valencia county: Fundraiser for Injured Valencia County Native Nets $70,000 - 03/20/10 05:29 PM
Last Saturday, the 13th of March, supporters, friends and family flocked to the Bosque Farms Rodeo Arena from all over New Mexico to raise funds toward the recovery of Senior Airman Michael Malarsie, a Bosque Farms native who was severely injured serving near Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan.
The 22-year-old lost his sight when an improvised explosive device went off during an attack. His family faced extensive medical bills for his initial recovery period at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and his continued rehabilitation at the Western Blind Rehabilitation Center in Palo Alto, Ca.
According to the mayor … (0 comments)

valencia county: Why isn't Rodeo our State Sport? - 07/09/09 07:12 PM
Apparently Rodeo IS the state sport in both Texas and Wyoming, according to a recent article in the Valencia County News Bulletin.
Why isn't it so here in New Mexico? All over my neck of the woods (Bosque Farms, in Valencia County) rodeo is a way of life for a huge segment of the population. Rodeos, barrel racing competition, and ropings are happening on an almost daily basis, at the Bosque Farms Arena and the two different arenas at the Valencia County Fairgrounds in Belen, not to mention at dozens of other arenas all over the rural parts of the state.

valencia county: Eating from the community garden - 06/29/09 02:00 PM
It's pretty much a no-brainer that eating local and organic food is best for one's physical health.

It's also a no-brainer that being involved with congenial friends in a tight-knit community is healthiest for one's emotional health.

Enter the "Community Garden."
Not all of us live out in the country with abundant land for a huge vegetable garden, nor are we all equipped with the knowledge of organic farming methods, or the time and inclination to spend loads of time alone with just nature for company.
The community garden enables anyone to get together, swap info, chat and visit … (2 comments)

valencia county: Bad News For Neighborhood Association - 06/27/09 01:56 PM
Folks in the San Clemente neighborhood of Los Lunas, New Mexico, have been fighting back against a decision by the Valencia County Commission to rezone 30 acres of land to I-3, "Hevay Industrial Use" to accomodate a bulk fuel terminal (see my blog post http://activerain.com/blogsview/1040106/residents-are-fighting-back-against-valencia-county-commission for mor details.)
The neighborhood association has just lost a major battle in that fight, though; District Court Judge George P. Eichwad has just upheld the county commission's decision, much to the dismay of local residents.
Plains Marketing, the business that requested the zone change, estimates that approximately 185 tanker trucks will be visiting the terminal … (2 comments)

valencia county: Residents are fighting back against Valencia County Commission - 04/18/09 02:56 PM
A couple of decisions recently made by the Valencia County Commission have local New Mexico residents hopping mad, and several local associations are fighting back against these elected officials who seem to be bent on going against the will of their constituents on local issues.
The Los Chavez Community Association and 41 neighborhood residents have filed a notice of appeal in district court regarding the 3/2 decision made by the County Council in January to re-zone 40 acres near the corner of John and Edmundo Roads from Agricultural Preservation (5 acre minimum) to allow a proposed subdivision of lands owned by John Whisenant and … (0 comments)

valencia county: A little town of Bethlehem--- with nerve! - 12/11/08 08:28 PM
We've got our own "Little Town of Bethlehem" right here in New Mexico. It's actually called "Belen," which is Spanish for "Bethlehem." And this year, the Greater Belen Chamber of Commerce is promoting an idea that is quaint, charming, and also (in our current era of political correctness) definitely gutsy and maybe risky. Here's the idea:
This Christmas season, the Chamber will host its first ever "Nativity Scene Contest." The idea grew from the town's name (Belen=Bethlehem), and is designed to "help make this city a tourist destination," according to a quotation from Deputy Chamber Director Cindy Clark that the Valencia County … (7 comments)

valencia county: Where is Adelino? Tome? Locating Valencia County's Small Communities - 05/30/07 09:47 PM
Even other residents of Valencia County, New Mexico, may well be confused by some locations stated in real estate ads. Where is Adelino? Or Tome? How about Peralta, or Los Chaves? Are Bosque and Bosque Farms the same thing? So here's your primer to Valencia County communities:
Most of the communities of Valencia County lie along the green ribbon of the Rio Grande. Some are actually incorporated towns, others are communities that are, in some ways at least, a part of the surrouding larger communities.
On the east side of the Rio Grande, coming south from Albuquerque, the first town you'd encounter is Bosque Farms, a growing … (2 comments)
