"We've turned a corner." Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hearing Leslie Appleton Young, California Association of Realtor's Chief Economist, speak at the LAX Hilton in Los Angeles.  Like any good economist she used charts and graphs to update a room full of real estate agents about the economy, the housing market and how the two are intertwined.  She talked about jobs, the euro, homes underwater and other players in the world economic and local housing scene.

"I have cash but can't find a house?"  I encounter this problem twice in the past five days--one buyer has cash and is searching for an ocean view home up to 1.5M, and the other is pre-approved with a large down payment. Unfortunately, the inventory is so depleted one buyer planned to spend the entire day viewing homes last Sunday but we were finished in less than two hours and that included a tour of Palos Verdes.
OK, Palos Verdes is not a megalopolis, but still there were only a few homes matching the buyer's criteria.  What's a buyer to do when the competition is … (5 comments)

Weed Whackers Palos Verdes Style - 05/27/12 05:54 PM

Palos Verdes is blessed with abundant open spaces throughout the hills and canyons of this stunning peninsula.  Wildfire season is upon us and each landowner is required to cut the weeds and trim overgrown shrubbery on the hills and canyons of his property to help prevent wildfires.
 
The City of Rancho Palos Verdes uses goats to control vegetation growth on the very steep hills and deep canyons.  While out showing property today, we paused long enough to point out the resident goat weed whackers along Palos Verdes Drive South.

Palos Verdes Beaches Receive High Marks - 05/27/12 05:24 PM
 
School will soon be out and local students will flock to the beach to enjoy another one of Southern California's famous 'endless' summers. It's nice to know while they are frolicking amid the surf the water will not make them sick according to the lastest local beach report cards.

Who is your guru on the road to real estate success?  During my twenty plus years in real estate I've listened to the wise words of many real estate speakers.  I've attended 3-day retreats, sat on folding chairs for hours at CAR classes and enjoyed plush seating in conference rooms at resort hotels, but I like online learning best.  It's so easy and so convenient--no lines, airports, hotels and all the other stuff that tags along when we attend a class or seminar.

The Pike in Long Beach is Restaurant Row - 05/18/12 03:39 PM

I admit the Palos Verdes Peninsula is a bit short on great places to dine, but my best advise is cross over the bridge. The Vincent Thomas Bridge that is, and hit The Pike in Long Beach. The choices are varied and the scene is both 'beachy' and urban. Whether you select to dine on slow cooking or something faster, decadent or light, there are many restaurants waiting for the opportunity to delight your taste buds.

Rip Van Winkle has much in common with today's real estate market in Palos Verdes and the surrounding South Bay communities.  Yes, after years of slumbering, and agents wondering whether it would ever return to life, the market is back.  I may need to add more minutes on my iPhone plan.  That's an easy fix, but not even this queen of time management has devised a way to add more minutes to the day.

It's About Them, Not Us--Spotlight Shift - 05/11/12 08:18 AM
I've always believed there is more right than wrong with the real estate profession. However, sometimes our flaws are flaunted in the face of consumers. I posted this original article in December 2007 (my first mini-rant) and I'm happy to say I think the Great Housing Depression taught us a lesson in compassion and sensitivity.  Some agents already exhibited the 'it's about them' mentality and others had to learn it.  Judging by the ads I perused last week there's been a radical shift in how we address the public.  The spotlight is now on the customer, not the agent.  After all, the real … (4 comments)

Buyers and Crows--Leaving the Fence - 05/06/12 07:17 PM

There were only two crows on the fence when I walked past this stretch of hiking trail at Trump National Golf Course.  Usually the fence is lined with black crows and I always enjoy seeing which ones will fly as I approach and which ones will eye me as a I pass but maintain their perch on the fence overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Have you ever seen a fairy garden?  Neither had I until yesterday.  I helped my 7 year old granddaughter paint and plant one, along with the help of her siblings.  We dressed in Saturday project clothing, pulled the old craft table out in the warm sunshine and began the project of painting toadstools, rocks and a fairy house.  We completed the project by planting a few magic beans and mystery seeds amid the flowers and fairies.  Oh yes, we sprinkled everything with fairy dust. Allegedly, it contains special powers to make everything turn out fine and I saved a little for the next big … (4 comments)

Bench at the Beach in Rancho Palos Verdes - 05/02/12 06:19 AM

April was a productive month for this Palos Verdes real estate agent (read that as lots of hours on the job) and when one area of life claims more of your time another area is in danger of getting short-changed. Balance is such a fluid state.
 
I am no slouch when it comes to seizing the moment.
