inspiration: Face into life's storms... - 11/03/13 09:11 PM

“Facing it, always facing it…that’s the way to get through.  Face it!”  (Joseph Conrad) – from the Jack’s Winning Words blog.

From what Jack went on to write, seamen know that once you are in a storm, you get through it by facing into it, not turning away or trying to run away from it. Life is like that, too. We don’t go looking for storms in life, but occasionally we all get caught up in them. Perhaps it’s a disagreement with a loved one or friend. Perhaps it has to do with dealing with a bad situation … (0 comments)

inspiration: Finish the day and be done with it... - 10/30/13 10:55 PM

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I saw that saying by Emerson on the wall of someone’s cubical recently and it struck a chord with me. While it would be a mistake not to learn from yesterday’s blunders and absurdities; it would be a bigger mistake to waste one’s … (2 comments)

inspiration: Have no regrets, you'll live longer... - 10/20/13 01:19 AM
“Never regret. If it’s good, it’s wonderful. If it’s bad, it’s experience.” (Victoria Holt)

Regret is one of those human nature things that are hard for many to let go of, just like self-doubt. Some may mask the term in other words, like “Monday morning quarterbacking”; however, that Monday morning look back only has positive value if it is used as a way to glean experience and not as an opportunity to wallow in regret.

Although the quotes of athletes is often derided as being full of cliques; there is much truth in many of those cliques about looking … (1 comments)

inspiration: Make two people happy today... - 09/01/13 10:51 PM
“When someone does something good, applaud. You will make two people happy.” (Sam Goldwyn)
I’ve not been posting much to my blogs lately it seems. Perhaps I’ve been too busy or think I have been. In any event I went back and looked at a little page of sayings that I keep on my desktop, many of them from one of my favorite blog sites – Jack’s Winning Words.
I’m not sure that this saying by Sam Goldwyn came from Jack’s blog, but it looks like the kind of saying that he would post.
When you think about it, what … (1 comments)

inspiration: Don't be dissapointed... - 07/15/13 12:15 AM

“There are two disappointments in life.  One is not getting what you want.  The other is getting it.”  (Oscar Wilde) from my favorite source, the Jack’s Winning Words blog.

I was drawn to this quote that Jack used recently by the amazingly simple complexity of it. We are as human beings always striving for something. At the most basic and primitive level that is the struggle to survive; however, few of us are at that level or even give that much thought. Most of us have aspirations – things that we want or want to achieve in life. The … (29 comments)

inspiration: Get real...it won't hurt - 06/26/13 09:44 PM
“When you are real, you don’t mind that it hurts.”  (The old Skin Horse) from the blog Jack’s Winning Words. Jack went on to say -  In the book, How Toys Become Real, a stuffed rabbit asks an older toy how to become real.  He’s told that you become real through magic and through the love of a little boy.  “When you are loved for a long, long time, not just to play with, you become real.”  The rabbit wonders, “Does it hurt?”  Today’s quote is the answer.  It’s like that in real life, too.    ;-)  Jack
It’s the little stuffed … (1 comments)

inspiration: Playing on the one string we have... - 06/05/13 10:34 PM

“The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.” (Chuck Swindoll) Swindoll went on to say, “Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.” Today’s saying from my favorite local blog – Jack’s Winning Words.

I used to spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about things that I just couldn’t change anyway. I still have occasional fits of anxiety-driven worry; however, I’ve tried to adopt the attitude that I’ll just let the scenario play itself out instead of worrying about all … (1 comments)

inspiration: Grow your wings... - 06/01/13 10:00 PM

“Sometimes you’ve got to jump off cliffs and grow wings on the way down.” (Ray Bradbury)

Life is full of opportunities to use Bradbury’s saying. We all face things that we’ve never done before or challenges that we have no idea how to overcome. The timid just back away from such things, while the adventuresome take Bradbury’s advice to heart and jump off the cliff of uncertainty and figure things out (grow their wings) on the way down.

I’ve always tended to initially be cautious, perhaps overly so; however, I’ve also found that whenever I do just jump … (1 comments)

inspiration: Make it possible... - 04/08/13 09:25 PM
From the Jack’s Winning Words blog comes this little bit of inspirational thinking - “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says, ‘I’m possible!’’” (Audrey Hepburn)

I like Hepburn’s line of thinking. It is directing you away from pondering the seemingly impossible things in life and towards using your imagination and intelligence to instead think of all of the things that you might do to make it possible. To my way of thinking, it is a much better use of your time.

If you start with the positive attitude that all things are possible, some perhaps more difficult than others, … (3 comments)

inspiration: Getting to know you... - 03/23/13 11:27 PM
“I wonder how many people I’ve looked at all my life and never seen?” (John Steinbeck) from the Jack’s Winning Words blog. You could also state this thought, “I wonder how many people I know that I don’t really know?”

As I get older I’ve become a bit more introspective about thoughts like Steinbeck’s saying. I suspect we all know people that we haven’t really taken the time to see (to know). We may even hang out with them and call them friends or acquaintances, but we really have never taken the time and made the effort to get … (1 comments)

inspiration: It’s all in the numbers… - 03/16/13 10:38 AM
I hear that phrase, "it's all in the numbers", often when agents are discussing real estate. It’s all in the numbers – you need so many suspects to get so many prospects in order to get so many clients, so that you can get so many listings or buyers, so that you can close enough deals to make so much money. Numbers, numbers, numbers.

While I understand the mathematical logic of that argument, it has always gritted a bit on me; because I believe that it’s really “all in the people.” I’m just not comfortable with a philosophy that basically … (1 comments)

inspiration: YOU have to make it happen... - 03/11/13 10:45 PM
The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want and if they can't find them, make them. – George Bernard Shaw
I have a whole raft of sayings by Shaw that I keep on hand for inspiration and reflection. This saying is one of Shaw’s inspirational sayings. Basically it admonishes us to take action to create the success (circumstances) that we desire. It is way too easy to just look around and not immediately see the circumstances that we desire and resign ourselves to living with what we do … (1 comments)

inspiration: Just be you, that's all you must do... - 03/03/13 08:18 PM
“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.” (Dr. Seuss) from a recent post by Jack in the Jack’s Winning Words blog.
I like today’s saying because it serves to reinforce that people should just try to be themself. Too many people seem to be trying to be someone or something that they are not. That is certainly true in how we market ourselves sometimes. There are all sorts of designations and certifications that one can obtain by paying a few bucks and sitting through a few hours of classes. … (4 comments)

inspiration: Get started creating yourself... - 02/10/13 10:15 PM

Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself. - George Bernard Shaw

I saw that quote from Shaw on a cute little wooden sign in one of those Country Knick-Knack shops that my wife and I visit occasionally. How often have you heard someone say that they’re trying to find themselves?

One could wander around forever and never “find themselves.” Indeed many do just that and never seem satisfied with life because whatever they are doing is “just not them.” Now, I have less issue with another saying that I saw in a Forbes … (1 comments)

inspiration: I never realized... - 02/04/13 08:48 PM

From the Jack’s Winning Words blog comes this bit of wisdom - “Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, or a stranger.” (Franklin P. Jones). Perhaps we all have trouble accepting constructive criticism from anyone. It’s “shields up” time whenever one senses incoming criticism, whether giving to be constructive or not.

I suppose the most helpful attitude one can adopt is to start by realizing and admitting that we are not perfect; that there are always going to be things that we could improve upon. The next thing to keep in mind is that … (5 comments)

inspiration: The real Secret to Awakening the Giant Within... - 01/29/13 09:31 PM

Today’s quote from the Jack’s Winning Words blog was -   “There is no such thing as a hopeless situation. Every single circumstance of your life can change.” (Rhonda Byrne). Jack discovered that she’s famous because of her New Thought book, “The Secret.” So, what’s Rhonda’s secret? Beethoven, Einstein and Henry Ford knew it. Finally…The secret is revealed. “Everything’s possible, and Nothing’s impossible.”

I remember viewing the video presentation of The Secret several years ago. There was enough skeptic in me to temper the message; however, I found it to be generally uplifting and a positive experience. One would certainly … (0 comments)

inspiration: Don't be a has-been, be a will-be... - 01/28/13 09:11 PM

“I am not a has-been. I am a will-be.” (Lauren Bacall), from Jack’s Winning Words.

Jack went on to talk about keeping a positive attitude about things and about cities like Detroit being on the come-back or will-be trail.

I had a tough year in real estate last year, but I don’t think of myself as a has-been just because of that. It was a tough year for many agents in my office, with listings way down and homes hard to find for the buyers that we had. It was also a year where many of my deals … (18 comments)

inspiration: Get off your duff... - 01/27/13 09:04 PM
“It’s easy to sit up and take notice. What is difficult is getting up and taking action.” (Honore de Balzac) - from the Jack’s Winning Words blog. As is often the case with Jack’s blog the focus is on doing and not just recognizing. If you see something that is wrong – do something about it. Jack went on to also share a saying that he says he has posted next to his computer - “Get Tough…Get Off Your Duff.” Interestingly, Jack opined that the saying that he has posted probably came from some sales pep talk.

Balzac’s advice is … (16 comments)

inspiration: Learning life's lessons from the greats of baseball - 01/22/13 05:30 AM

I usually like to use quotes from Yogi Barra, if I’m using a baseball quote in a blog post; but today I saw one from another baseball great that struck a chord with me – “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” - Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth was the best home run hitter of his era, and most other eras for that matter; however, he was also the strike out king of his time, too. Ruth was always swinging for the fences. He once commented that he probably could have been a .600 hitter … (0 comments)

inspiration: Walk the walk... - 01/16/13 09:23 PM

Jack had two quotes from Arnold Glason on his blog this morning and I saw a lot to like about them in terms of real estate sales. The first is –

“Success is simple. Do what’s right, the right way, at the right time.”

That seems intuitive and something that any good Realtor should be doing; however, the second quote perhaps sums up in a few words why that doesn’t always happen –

“It’s a long way from words to deeds.”

In the automotive industry they used to say that you’ve got to walk the … (3 comments)
