28th Annual Reedville Fishing Derby; June 10 & 11, 2011

It's time for the annual Reedville Fishing Derby. The derby is held at Buzzard Point Marina in Reedville, VA.

This year, the tournament will be offering anglers an opportunity to win prizes of over $25,000 for 3 species of fish, Striped Bass, Bluefish, and Croaker. The Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are well known fishing areas with numerous creeks, rivers, and quick Bay access.

The all volunteer organization of Smith Point Sea Rescue organizes the derby as a fund raiser. The Smith Point Sea Rescue organization has been serving boaters in distress in the mid-Chesapeake Bay area from the lower Potomac River to the Rappahannock River for 30 years.

The Captain's Registration is Thursday, June 9 from 11am to 8pm at Buzzard Point Marina. The tournament fishing begins on Fri., June 10. Friday night activities include a Country Western DJ from 8pm to 11pm. Saturday night's entertainment will be a live band, Casper from 8pm to 12MN. Of course, merchandise vendors, food, and beverages will be available. The fishing awards are generally given out on Saturday night. Even if you don't fish in the Derby, there is a good time to be had by all. It's always fun to see who wins the prize for the largest fish.

Blessing of the Fishing Fleet

Following decades of tradition, fishing villages gather together to bless the fishing vessels at the start of the fishing season. This annual blessing is for a safe and prosperous fishing season.

The Northern Neck of VA Blessing of the Fleet ceremony is a much anticipated event. This year's blessing will be on Sunday, May 1, 2011. The day gets started at 3:30 pm with The Parade of Boats. Large boats, small boats, all types of boats from commercial fishing to speed boats are invited to join the parade.

The blessing can be enjoyed from land or from boat. In years past, my husband and I have gathered friends together on our small boat along with heavy snacks and drinks, and enjoyed an entire afternoon of fellowship and fun. A wonderful video of the 2008 Blessing of the Fleet can be viewed here.

One highlight of this event is hearing the Northern Neck Chantey Singers. The fishing nets are very heavy when full of fish. The men used to pull the nets in by hand but it required all the men pulling at the same time. The workers would sing and on the chorus, they would all pull together. Today, most of the nets are pulled in using a power block wench. Occasionally, as the nets get close to the purse boats, the workers may still help pull them in by hand. The Easter Bunny Arrives in Reedville VA!

The Reedville Fishermen's Museum and Bethany United Methodist Church hosted its annual Easter Egg Hunt and arrival of the Easter Bunny this morning. The skies were a bit overcast and a light drizzle of rain was falling intermittently. But, the fellowship and excitement of the day was not dampened by the weather.

The morning started off with volunteers hiding the 2,188 candy filled eggs for the BIG HUNT. The children began to gather together behind the museum on the banks of Cockrell's Creek to await the arrival of the Easter Bunny by boat.

Easter Bunny arrived on the Elva C. The Elva C is a 55' pound netting boat built in 1922. It has been restored and is permanently docked at the Reedville Fishermen's Museum.

The children are lining up in preparation of the "countdown" to start the egg hunt.

After all the eggs were found, a reception was held next door inside Bethany United Methodist Church. The children were treated to juice, doughnuts, coloring papers, beautiful crosses, and of course....lots of LOVE from Easter Bunny.

It was another great morning in Reedville, VA. Happy Easter to All!

What the heck are those little boxes with dots???

I've recently had several people ask me what those little black boxes are for and what are you supposed to do with them. Have you been noticing them, too? Here is an example:

It is called a QR Code. This code, when scanned with your smart phone, contains information (in this case) about a waterfront listing I have for sale at 268 Flag Pond Lane, Heathsville, VA .

QR is short for "Quick Response". If you have a smart phone with a camera, just download the FREE application for a Bar Code Reader or QR Code Reader. After the bar code reader is installed on your phone, you can scan bar codes and QR codes for information such as a web site link, text information, or other data.

The QR Codes look very similar but each one contains different bits of information.

Try this one This QR Code will take you to a website link containing listing information on a waterfront listing at 52 Swann Court, Reedville, VA. Some QR Codes even point to YouTube videos.

The Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon is one of the three major fund raising activities for the club. The other activities include a monthly Bridge Game Day with Luncheon and a Red Hat Bingo Luncheon.

There was an award for "Woman of the Year" presented to Joan Clements for her outstanding volunteer work and dedication to the Northumberland County Red Cross. Ms. Clements has donated many years of loyal volunteer service to the local Red Cross and assisted with hurricane relief, fire displacement relief, and has helped promote local blood drives along with many, many other services. Congratulations on a well deserved award!

The Northumberland County Woman's Club is open to all women living in Northumberland County. What are you waiting for?

Lets go Fishing!

The Northern Neck of VA is well known for great fishing. Reedville was once called the town that fish built due to a number of commercial fishing factories that lined Cockrell's Creek. While all but one factory is gone now, the fishing remains very good.

For novice and experienced fishermen and fisherwomen, there are few fishing experiences that top going out with a professional charter boat captain. The charter boat captains can find some of the best fishing holes around. I don't relish the thought of baiting my own hook and taking my catch off the line. OK, OK, I admit it, I'm far from a fishing expert but, I do like to eat fish if that counts at all!

I like charter fishing because all I have to do is book the trip and show up. I leave the navigation, the baiting, and line detangling to those more competent in such matters. I can relax, enjoy the boat ride and sun, and throw my baited fishing hook over and wait for the "big one". If you take one of the charter boats out of Reedville, it is just a very short ride to the Chesapeake or out to "the jetties" for the Stripers.

This is the time to book your Spring fishing trip before all the good dates fill up. Two excellent charter boats out of the Reedville area are the J-Mar with Capt. Ferrell McLain known as Bayfish Sport Fishing Charters and the Mystic Lady II with Capt. Gene Pittman at Pittman Charters.

The J-Mar is a 42 foot fiberglass, fully equipped charter boat. She has the latest fishing equipment including rods and tackle. The J-Mar has a spacious heated cabin for fall and spring fishing, and a private restroom.

The J-Mar is Coast Guard inspected and approved for 12 passengers.

A wonderful day of fishing awaits you on the Mystic Lady II with Capt. Gene Pittman out of Reedville, VA. Capt. Pittman offers Chesapeake Bay fishing for Stripers, blues, flounder, trout, and spanish mackerel.

The Mystic Lady II is a 46 ft. fiberglass sport fishing boat with the latest equipment for fishing, safety, and enjoyment. She is Coast Guard inspected and approved for 23 passengers. The Mystic Lady II offers air conditioning and heat, spacious cabin, and a private toilet. Generally a mate is along to assist with baiting your line, helping you bring your catch aboard, and cleaning your fish on the trip back to the dock.

Rubber soled shoes are necessary to prevent falls on wet or slippery boat decks. Be prepared for the sun's rays even in the spring and bring hats, sunglasses, and sun screen. Another item to bring is a cooler to carry home your fish and an attitude for adventure. Enjoy your day on the water in the Northern Neck of VA.

Got Shoes...Horseshoes, that is

As an animal lover and horse owner, my clients often ask me who to call on for equine hoof care here in the Northern Neck of VA. A light bulb flashed on last Tuesday as my horse was getting his "new shoes".

BLOG about it.... Meet Joe Cuthbertson, my farrier.

This photo shows Joe Cuthbertson and Melissa Malandrinos as they are preparing to provide hoof care to my horse, Dusty. Joe usually has his traveling companions Spirit and Moose along with him. Spirit is an elderly but feisty, wire haired Jack Russell Terrier and Moose is a golden retriever. Moose is just a youngster and learning the proper ferrier dog etiquette from Spirit. We have been happy to welcome Melissa who is a graduate of the Heartland Horseshoeing School. She has been working with Joe for her practical "hands-on" training.

Joe is a second generation farrier. His father used to provide hoof care for Dusty prior to his retirement a couple years ago. Joe, a graduate of VMI and of horseshoeing school, has been doing a good job of keeping Dusty's feet happy and healthy over the last few years.

He arrives like clockwork at his appointed time every six weeks to remove the old horse shoes, clean and trim back any extra unwanted hoof growth, and set the new shoes.

Dusty especially likes Joe's visits since he arrives with horse treats. He gets excited when he sees the truck that is outfitted just for farrier services because he knows he will get new shoes, lots of petting, and sweet licorice flavored treats...mmm

Daddy-O's Restaurant

Daddy-O's is one of those places like on the TV show, Cheers, where everybody knows your name...

Daddy-O's just opened about 6 months ago and has become a wonderful addition to the area. It is located in Burgess, VA right on Rt. 360 near the stop light.

It is open most days for lunch and dinner and offers a casual and friendly atmosphere. The decor is retro with photos of James Dean, Elvis, and the like gracing the walls.

Daddy-O's specializes in pizzas and subs. They make their own crust from a closely guarded recipe. My favorite pizza is their Greek pizza although the Margarita pizza looks amazing as well.

But, in addition to great pizzas and calzones, they offer daily lunch specials that include delicious soups, sandwiches, and subs. Their crispy matchstick fries are very popular. If you are in the mood for something lighter, they have awesome fresh salads of all types.

Aluminum and Copper Thieves seek out new construction and vacant homes

With the rising price of scrap metal, thieves are targeting new construction homes, construction sites, and vacant homes. Some thieves are bold enough to strip occupied homes as well. Items such as aluminum gutters, telephone wires, old radiators, copper downspouts, and air conditioner coils are highly sought after since the demand for scrap metal and the price for the metal has skyrocketed over the last couple of years. There are some reports of theft of aluminum siding being stripped off vacant homes.

Some of the thieves pose as construction workers and enter neighborhoods in the daylight and start their work. One recent theft occurred when the sellers of a home that was under contract moved out 4 days prior to settlement. During the final walk through, it was discovered that the entire house was stripped of all metal...fixtures, gutters, even the walls were torn out and the copper pipes had been removed. Luckily, the current homeowner still had his insurance policy in full force on the home. Replacing the metal is not the biggest expense, repairing all the damage is just as costly or even more costly and labor intensive.

People with vacant homes are not only shocked by the theft, they are shocked to find out they may not be covered by their homeowners insurance policy. Some policies will not cover homes that have been vacant for more than 30 days. In some instances, it is a simple procedure to add a vacant home rider to the policy. In other cases, a new insurance carrier may be needed as some insurance carriers do not offer vacant home insurance.

There may not be much you can do to keep someone from stealing the gutters off your vacant home but you can avoid becoming the home owner that didn't have adequate vacant home insurance coverage. Life changes fast, situations change, people get busy and things are easily overlooked or put off for another day. Don't delay in checking your coverage and properly securing your vacant home.

Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration in Reedville, VA

The annual Reedville, VA, Independence Day Celebration will be fun for the entire family. This celebration seems to get larger every year. It is considered one of the largest Independence Day events in the Northern Neck.

This year all the activities are scheduled for Sat., July 5, 2008. This festive and full day kicks off with the Firecracker 5K run/walk at 8am. Please click here for more information and to register for the race.

Some of the scheduled events include a small boat show which will be held at the pier at the Reedville Fisherman's Museum. Boats will be on display all day in the water and behind the boat building building. An artist's arena crafts fair will be held from 10am to 4pm.

Kids can assemble, decorate, and sail a boat to take home with them at the RFM Pavilion from 12N to 1:30. This activity is best for children 8 years and under. Kids can also enjoy face painting and tattoos and the pie eating contest at 1:00 pm.

Join in on the patriotic and folk song sing a-long at 2:00pm. The grand parade down Main Street will be held at 3:00 pm. There is sure to be antique cars, marching bands, all types of floats, kids on bicycles all decorated for the celebration, and you might even catch a glimpse of Uncle Sam strolling through the crowd.

The day ends with a spectacular fireworks show at the end of Reedville at 9:00pm. After the fireworks, dance the night away at the Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department Building on Main Street. For more information on Reedville's Independence Day Celebration, click here.

St. Stephen's Strawberry Festival; Heathsville, VA

There was a large crowd at the annual Strawberry Festival in Heathsville, VA, on Sat., May 24, 2008. St. Stephen's Anglican Church hosts this event every year. The Strawberry Festival is held on Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend.

The tiny village of Heathsville nearly bursts at its seams as thousands of people from all around travel from distances up to 200 miles away to shop for arts and crafts, listen to the music, socialize, have lunch, and of course, EAT the famous strawberry shortcake.

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the event with my husband, his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. While I browsed through hand made jewlery, paintings, and baked goods, my husband spotted a beautiful hand carved heron made by a local artisan, Herb Lewis.

We are now the proud owners of this lovely art piece carved from wood, hand painted and set on a finished base. There is even a little hand carved turtle on on the wood pieces on the base. The grandkids had a wonderful time and were especially pleased to get their faces painted for free.

The Northern Neck of VA is one of a few places that still have the quiet, country charm of yesteryear. We are blessed to be able to experience a more relaxed lifestyle where neighbors have time to chat with each other or share a slice of blueberry pie. This is especially true in Reedville, VA. Not only is Reedville a quaint waterside village; it is a state of mind, a lifestyle.

For such a small community, there is always something going on to enjoy. The Reedville Fishermen's Museum is a stop that you should not miss when you visit Reedville. The museum is full of Reedville's history and the history of the commercial fishing industry that is a large part of our past and present.

You can usually find a crowd at the museum on Friday evenings for Cocktails on Cockrell's Creek. This is a great time to see what's new in the museum and to connect with your friends and neighbors. Of course, it is informal and relaxed....it's a Reedville kind of thing. The RFM sponsors and/or participates in many events and workshops throughout the year. A favorite workshop is the boatbuilding classes and the Oyster Gardening Workshop in September.

There are several nice restaurants in Reedville; Tommy's and the Crazy Crab. Both offer delicious food, great atmosphere, and are waterfront. The Crazy Crab also has a marina so you can arrive by boat if you wish. The Fairport Marina, just outside of the "downtown" Reedville area, offers a full service marina and a restaurant. The beer is cold, the seafood is fresh, and the nautical, casual atmosphere is priceless. Chitterchats is our local ice cream and gossip parlour. The décor is retro, the conversation is lively, and the ice cream is wonderful. Chitterchats reminds me of what an ice cream parlour in Mayberry would have resembled.

There is always a big Independence Day Celebration in Reedville. The parade keeps growing and is anticipated by all. The children decorate their bikes, some people decorate their riding lawnmowers or golf carts for the parade, fire trucks from all around attend, sometimes there are tractors decorated, all types of floats, high school marching band, the American Legion, and much more. The entire day is full starting with a 5K run, vendors, bake sales, museum tours, boat rides, the parade, and then a wonderful fireworks display over the creek at night.

Almost any morning or afternoon you will see the Reedville residents out walking their dogs, bicycling, or jogging. I often stop in to chat with my neighbors while my dog begs for treats and is generally rewarded. It is not unusual for the locals to pull up alongside our dock and call out their greetings or to sound their boat horn as they glide past our home on Cockrell's Creek. Reedville's just that kind of place....a real hometown. Come for a visit, you might make Reedville your home, too.

25th Annual Reedville VA Bluefish Derby

Come join in the fun at this year's Reedville Bluefish Derby presented by Smith Point Sea Rescue. Mark your calendar for June 13-14, 2008! Prior registration is required and you can find the registration form on line. Captain's meeting is Thursday evening, June 12. Fishing days are June 13-14. An awards ceremony will be held Sat. night, June 14. First prize for the largest bluefish and largest rockfish are $5,000!

The public is invited to attend the festivities and watch the weigh-ins. Live entertainment includes a DJ on Thursday night, the band Casper on Friday night with the Ray Pittman Project band on Sat. night. There will be a Fish Fry Plus on Friday and Saturday nights...fried fish, chicken, and ribs dinner...sounds good! Awards include a female angler award, youth award, and daily prizes as well as the overall prizes for largest bluefish and rockfish. Come out, enjoy the Northern Neck hospitality, walk along the marina docks and see some gorgeous fishing boats, enjoy the music, dance, and dive into the fish fry plus! Activities will be held at Buzzards Point Marina in Reedville, VA.

Smith Point Sea Rescue is the last remaining volunteer sea rescue service on the Chesapeake Bay. The Smith Point Sea Rescue Unit was officially organized around 1974. It began out of a need to provide emergency rescue services for boaters that were in distress. They still provide this service today and are a non-profit group raising operating funds primarily through donations and the Bluefish Derby. This is a great opportunity to enjoy some of the finest fishing, food, and music around while benefiting a worthwhile organization. The Northern Neck is home to many historic sites. Stratford Hall is one of my favorites. Stratford Hall is the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. It is one of America's great historic homes. The plantation encompasses about 1670 acres and is still managed as a farm. Stratford is located on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River in Westmoreland County. There are farm animals on the plantation including cattle, sheep, and goats. It's worth spending the day visiting Stratford Hall as there are lots of things to see and do.

Take the tour of the historic home, walk the beautiful grounds and gardens, and visit the mill. They still grind corn, wheat, oats, and barley at the mill today. The millstones are powered by wooden gears driven by a waterwheel. Enjoy lunch in the log cabin dining room. The country ham biscuits and crab cakes are outstanding!

Stratford Hall hosts special events throughout the year. The next event is Coaching Day, Sun., April 27, 2008. This is sure to be an unforgettable event. Some of the activities include a parade of 19th Century road coaches and carriages, Jack Russell Terrier races, pony rides for the children, gymnastics on horseback demonstration and much more. As a native of Northumberland County, VA, I grew up not understanding how fortunate I was to live in such a special place. Northumberland County encompasses about 222 square miles and is home to approximately 12,000 people. Northumberland was actually the Mother County for what later became the Northern Neck of VA.

The Northern Neck lies between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers and tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay. We are basically an island connected to the rest of Virginia by bridges. Due to the lack of ability for us "Neckers" to access other areas of Virginia until the bridge to Essex County came in 1926, development occurred at a slower more relaxed pace. We still are a gentler, slower, more relaxed place today. If you are searching for a simpler lifestyle, the Northern Neck may be the right place for you!
