Google Analytics for Outside Blogs Step by Step and Getting Traffic That Just Won’t Quit! - 03/31/09 04:01 PM
Yesterday there was some big news on the Active Rain network. Brad Andersohn announced the staff has finally added Google Analytics to the outside blogs.  A lot of us have been waiting a long time for this to happen and I can only assume that there were some big hurdles to get over to get this to even work. But it’s here so everyone should be excited. Most people have probably not had a chance to add the code to get it working yet and the few of us who jumped on this have had a chance to see the reports!

Legalize it Today! And by “it” I Mean EVERYTHING!!! - 03/31/09 11:19 AM
There has been a lot of talk lately about legalizing marijuana and other drugs. There are many obvious reasons why the current laws are not only absurd but racist in design and execution. That’s another whole long series of books and if you are not aware I suggest doing some research. But why all the sudden everyone is talking about this I am not quite sure. It used to be a subject that was often whispered about but seldom talked about. Why there is this fear of discussing a law that is so harmful and obviously illogic really bothers me. In … (4 comments)

Active Rain Profile SEO Issue is Fixed! - 03/31/09 10:42 AM
I saw this last night when I ran a rank checker program (Thanks Rocket 55) It was immediately after I responded again to Paul’s blog post here. I noticed that my rank was almost back to its original spot for the keywords Eau Claire Wisconsin Real Estate Agent. I know it’s more of a long tail phrase but it was one that I rank really well for (normally I take up 6 of the 10 first page spots) The rank checker program reported that I was 10 for this spot but when I did the same search it was nowhere to … (14 comments)

When Will we Ever Learn? Visual Tour of Chernobyl - 03/30/09 11:19 AM
There has been a lot of talk lately about alternative fuels and trying to “green” our energy usage. Some of the big talks during the elections and since have been that nuclear fission is somehow safe and green. Yet it’s clearly not either of those things. Nuclear waste is being stockpiled throughout the country with no safe way of storing or disposing of it. On top of that nuclear fission is far from safe but sometimes we forget. Sometimes we need to be reminded of why we don’t do certain things. I came across two different articles recently that highlight not … (2 comments)

Bill O’Reilly to Have Plug Pulled on his Show? - 03/29/09 02:25 PM
I will do my best to keep out my personal opinions about Bill O’Reilly. Let’s just say we come from different viewpoints and leave it at that. But I will point out how other people feel about him. Recently for some strange reason he was invited to a fundraiser for a group that raises money to support victims of rape. This is strange news because Bill O’Reilly was once sued for sexual harassment and has publicly said the following:
O’REILLY: Now Moore, Jennifer Moore, 18, on her way to college. She was 5-foot-2, 105 pounds, wearing a miniskirt and a halter … (4 comments)

Content Stealing Jerks - 03/29/09 02:01 PM
Content stealing jerks. That’s an interesting way to put it. You know those people that copy and paste your life blood. Those sweat and tear soaked articles you work so hard for and at the click of a few buttons someone else is getting credit. Some of these people are so bad at stealing they leave your name or a link to your website. Others aren’t quite that lazy and try to edit it just enough to remove any traces as to who wrote it or they add their name at the end.
And just so it’s clear that I am not … (9 comments)

The War on Spam Goes 3-D With new 3-D Captcha - 03/29/09 01:42 PM
A while back I wrote a post trying to warn everyone that Captcha as a security measure has been defeated. This basically means that anyone who has a blog or any site that uses Captcha for security pretty much has no security. Spammers could easily hit your site with whatever they want and that’s not good. Well it’s good for them but bad for us. So I had a feeling people were scrambling to find a new method of security. Then I saw this article here.
This new technology makes it pretty much impossible for a computer to crack so … (0 comments)

Twitter Coming to a Car Near you With OnStar??!! - 03/29/09 10:39 AM
Ok at first when I read this my first thought was wow are they crazy or what? Then when I figured out how it works I wasn’t quite so shocked. Apparently they are working on a way or are going to just integrate Twitter into OnStar so that you can Tweet while you drive. Sounds dangerous right? Well it actually works using a voice activation system so that it is entirely hands free. Still sounds a bit dangerous to me but much less so than Tweeting with your fingers. I would think it is distracting though but probably no more so … (6 comments)

Saving ink and Saving the Planet - 03/28/09 05:41 PM
This is probably something that most people don’t think about. I know a lot of people are becoming more environmentally aware or conscious and that’s a good thing. Remember that our resources are limited and putting bad stuff back into the environment is not a good thing. Neither is wasting resources. Think before you print might be a saying that you see once in a while but it’s something that you might not necessarily do. Yet it’s very important to remember that saving trees is important. It’s a big waste of natural resources to waste paper. I realize we can recycle … (6 comments)

Why Linking to Your Blog(s) From Your Website is Good SEO and not Doing so is Bad - 03/28/09 12:11 PM
Ok I thought this sort of speculation was a thing of the past because so many SEO websites, gurus, and bloggers have covered this topic that I guess I thought everyone knew the answer but it seems not everyone knows so I will try to cover the topic. The question?
Does Google discount reciprocal linking or is having a link from your website to your blog bad for SEO?
Ok I am going to answer this question in a number of ways because there are a variety of reasons this is just a bad idea. Some people have been suggesting … (9 comments)

4 Buyers, 2 Offers, 1 Listing, 1 day and I blogged to Tell About it! - 03/27/09 08:30 PM
I wasn’t sure if the title of this post should be “and I blogged to tell about it” or “I lived to blog about it!” Either way I sure had a busy day the other day. I know some people wouldn’t want me talking about their situation so I try to change things up a bit. But this has seriously been one of the busiest weeks just this week and the other day when all that happened was even crazier. I don’t know what else to say about it but it’s been seriously hard to fit everything in my schedule. It’s … (4 comments)

Facebook: Your Privacy is now Your Option… Why Would you not Want Privacy? Read on… - 03/26/09 11:28 AM
For most people privacy is not only a concern it’s an absolute must. This is especially true when it comes to minors on the internet. Privacy matters as well when it comes to spam because in this day and age no one likes to give out emails because of the inevitable onslaught of spam that ensues afterwards.
While all the above is most certainly true you must be wondering why on earth anyone would want to give up all that privacy. Well for some of us we don’t want anything private. Every bit of information about us is shared on … (8 comments)

Twitter Turns Three and Dozens of Other Twitter News - 03/26/09 10:53 AM
Twitter turned 3 years old the other day and for most people that number probably seems strange because for most people Twitter is rather new. I admit I didn’t know about Twitter 3 years ago but I guess I was into social networking when hotmail was new and am only getting back into it now because of necessity. Not to be anti-social but I really don’t like it for the most part. I do enjoy meeting new people from all over the country but being poked 12 times a day is rather tough to deal with when you work a lot. … (6 comments)

Google’s Other big Announcement: Major Change to Snippets in Search Results (SEO) - 03/25/09 11:43 AM
Google just announced some rather big news in how it displays search results (SERP) by now providing an even longer snippet. A snippet is what used to be just a bit of text located right below the link on the results page but now they are rolling out an even longer result. While this is great for the end user this might not be so great for consumers. Ars Technica is speculating that this might lead to more time spent Googling and less click throughs. Translated this means the searcher might get the answer to their question or query without having … (6 comments)

Google Starts Rolling out Semantic Searches and More! Big Big News at Google - 03/25/09 10:44 AM
For years SEO experts and not-so-experts have been saying that semantic searching will be the next big thing since Kool-Aid. Some have said it was already here and some said it would never come. Well it’s here. Well sort of. Google announced yesterday that “we're deploying a new technology that can better understand associations and concepts related to your search, and one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at the top, of the search results page)” The thing is that for me it doesn’t seem to … (5 comments)

Blogging for Readers or Blogging for SEO? Why not Blog for Both! - 03/24/09 01:57 PM

There was a recent post that I am sure many people read regarding whether you should blog for your readers or be worrying about how search engines read your blogs. The premise was that somehow you have to pick one or the other and if so they would pick the reader. I guess this is because from what they understand of SEO or maybe just how a lot of people see SEO is that it sticks out like a sore thumb. But good SEO is good for the reader too. It’s the bad stuff that gets a bad rap.

I often write about the importance of backing up all your files. Why? Because it’s important duh! I am actually shocked at the number of people with websites that don’t even know you are supposed to back up the data let alone have a backup! The same goes for any of your personal data. Think of it as a safe with all your most valuable child hood possessions. If you don’t keep them safe they are but a memory. Why take chances?

I prefer to worry about the things I can directly control.

Secondly it was pretty much impossible because phones just couldn’t process movies. They were basically too limited and the resources necessary would … (5 comments)

It’s just another example of how monopolistic practices result in crappy products. No wonder Firefox and the rest are eating up such a large market share. It’s no secret they are simply much better than IE. Regardless of what side of the fence you sit on politically it’s pretty hard to deny the facts surrounding these tax cuts and pretty hard to deny the facts surrounding whose taxes will actually be raised. The fact is that 98% of Americans will get a tax cut and for once we the little guys win while the richest 2% of Americans that is people who make over $200,000 per year or $250,000 for families will have an increase in taxes.
