Nuclear Radiation and Fallout

I’m a child of the 50’s. I remember the atomic bomb drills in school and people putting fallout shelters at their home. In. their. front. yard! Remember those?

So now I find myself thinking, am I sensitized or de-sensitized to the current nuclear power plant disaster in Japan? Should I have iodine pills on hand? Result – I’m sensitized as as far as having knowledge of the situation and an awareness of what’s going on. I’m de-sensitized as far as not being worried about it.

In the 50’s I was concerned about how to save myself from the bomb and nuclear fallout. In the 60’s I was of the age where I was certain I was indestructible and would not be affected. In the 70’s I was sitting on top of the bomb in my F-4 knowing full-well that if the horn went off and I dropped it, there would be no place to land by the time I got there. In the 80’s – détente. 90’s – cold war over!

So, Exactly How Close Are We To One of Those Nuclear Power Plants?

Oklahoma does not have a nuclear power plant. We still have coal-fired plants. Comes from Coal County I guess. Our neighbors, Kansas and Texas do have them. CNNMoney.com has a nifty map where you just put in your zip code and it’ll tell you how far you are from the nearest nuclear power plants. Our humble abode and office are 210 miles from the Wolf Creek 1 plant in Kansas.

So here I sit in the good ole 73013 – fat, dumb and happy! 210 miles from the nearest nuclear power plant. I don’t have duct tape. I don’t have iodine pills.
