oakville ontario: Window Shopping In Downtown Oakville - Me, My Dog & My Camera - 12/15/10 03:24 PM
It's that time of year again.  The windows of downtown Oakville's shops and boutiques are decorated in anticipation of shoppers on the hunt for that perfect holiday gift for their loved ones (or maybe even themselves).
As my dog Lola gave me "the look" last night I decided that instead of just walking the neighbourhood we would head downtown and take photos of the decorated store windows.  Oakville has a very vibrant downtown core with lots of unique boutiques and great restaurants.
Many of the stores have gone to great length to fill their windows with glitz and glam and others … (13 comments)

oakville ontario: Thursday's Thoughts - I Don't Get It - 09/30/10 05:28 PM
1.  I don't get it - I was out for a walk in the neighbourhood  and came across the following sign on a typical area street.

Heaven forbid a student driver taking a lesson decide to parallel park on this street or any street in the area with these unfriendly signs.  I remember the days of learning how to parallel park.
Here in Oakville we have a three hour street parking limit, I believe.  Perhaps the folks on these particular streets are finding that today's new … (21 comments)

oakville ontario: It Was A Rainy Day Monday - But It Didn't Get Me Down - 09/28/10 12:47 AM
Dogs are great.  They don't care if it's raining or not.  All they want to do is go for walks.  Today was a pretty dismal day.  A constant drizzle throughout the day made it a good day to throw a Matchbox 20 CD on and do some house cleaning.
By late afternoon my little Lola started looking at me the way she does when she is "ready".  All you have to do is say the words "are you ready" and she knows she's going for a walk.
I had to run a couple of errands so decided on the way home to … (32 comments)

oakville ontario: Speechless Sunday - Signs Of The Times - 09/05/10 02:28 PM
A great start to the new school season - As seen on local Church sign.

Which banks do you trust these days?

I've always wondered how beavers do it.  Haven't you?

Something my mother always told me.

I saw these final words of wisdom on a sign but didn't get the camera out fast enough as I drove by:
"Growing old is mandatory.  Growing up is optional."
Happy Labour Day Weekend.

oakville ontario: The Sovereign House Museum - Oakville, Ontario - 06/04/10 11:14 PM
The Sovereign House Museum is located in Oakville near the west harbour in historic Bronte Village.  The home was saved from a developer's wrecker's ball in 1988 and moved from it's original  location to Town of Oakville parkland overlooking Lake Ontario on West River Street.
The farm house was built in stages between 1825 and 1846 by Charles Sovereign.  Novelist Mazo de la Roche, famous for her Whiteoaks of Jalna sagas lived in the house for about five years, prior to her becoming famous.
Renovations on the house have given it the appearance of the style of the 1910 era.  The Bronte Historical Society. maintains the property and it opened up to the … (12 comments)

oakville ontario: What Do I Wear To Dinner With 100+ High School Classmates - 35 Years Later? - 05/15/10 08:03 PM
I'm a spur of the moment kind of gal.  I'm not big at planning into the future, I tend to take each day as it comes.  I do have an event coming up next weekend though that I have been helping to plan for almost 2 years.
After a 100th anniversary reunion in May 2008 of the high school I graduated from, a group of us thought it might be fun to plan a reunion for our graduating class of 200 some odd.  A committee was formed consisting of 3 of us from Oakville, 2 from Georgetown, 1 from Vancouver, 1 … (32 comments)

oakville ontario: Oakville Ontario - Signs Of Spring - 04/24/10 12:14 AM
Spring is in the air in Oakville.  It is also in the forests, on the trails and gracing Oakville's streets and  yards.  Everywhere you go you see and smell sweet blossoms, fresh new leaves, and spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils and trilliums.
There is no better time than now to get out and enjoy these early spring blossoms before they are gone.  The magnolia trees are in full bloom and for such a sweet short time.  This is April.  Aren't we supposed to be getting the April showers before we get the May flowers?
No rain to speak of this month but … (32 comments)

oakville ontario: Deliver The Letter - The Sooner The Better - 03/17/10 12:47 PM
"Deliver the letter, the sooner the better."  Who can forget these lyrics from the famous Beatles tune.
Oh yes, wait just a minute mister postman   Wait, wait mister postman (Mister postman look and see) oh yeah (If there's a letter in the bag for me) Please mister postman (I've been waiting a long long time)oh, yeah (Since I heard from that gal of mine)
Today many relationships begin and even end online.  Personal and business.  Long gone are the days of the messenger riding off on his horse to deliver important news.  Or the stagecoach stopping into the post office/general store/social meet-up spot with parcels. Or … (17 comments)

oakville ontario: Town Talk - Did You Know Oakville Has A 25 Year Old Sister? - 03/10/10 11:36 AM
For 25 years the Town of Oakville has had a twin sister city in Neyagawa, Japan.  In 1984 officials in Neyagawa were looking for a city to twin with and Oakville was suggested by a former resident then living in Japan.  The two mayors at the tiime signed a declaration in April 1984 and the bond was formed.
Neyagawa is a suburb of Osaka much like Oakville is to Toronto with many residents commuting to work in the nearby cities.  This relationship was established to promote international understanding, cooperation and friendship.  To enhance this cultural link many exchanges have taken place with teachers, students, service clubs and … (6 comments)

oakville ontario: Town Talk - Do You Know What's Happening In Oakville? - 02/21/10 12:00 AM
I have found a couple of excellent Oakville sites where you can get up to the minute happenings around town.  The first comes from the Town of Oakville's own website and the page is called:
All public notices  Here you will find an up to date calendar of important public information meetings that may be of interest to you as an Oakville resident.  There are plan of subdivision applications,  general meetings for the proposed new hospital, bylaw amendments, drop in sessions, etc. all taking place at Town Hall.
This is a great way to become aware of what is happening in the community.

oakville ontario: Waterworks Park Oakville, Ontario - On The Waterfront - 02/15/10 07:49 PM
One of Oakville's best kept secrets  is Waterworks Park.  Located at the bottom of Kerr Street on the shores of Lake Ontario, this park offers a serene setting, enjoyable at all times of the year.
A path heads eastward towards the harbour and ends at a staircase that leads up to Tannery Park.  The view from the top of Tannery Park is incredible and overlooks the harbour, the Toronto skyline,  Oakville Towarf and the pier and lighthouse.
The Larry Cain trail leads down the hill and  onto a path towards the west side of the harbour.  Oakville native  Cain won  gold and silver  medals in canoeing  during the 1984 Olympic Games.  … (9 comments)

oakville ontario: The Cat Came Back - But It Wasn't The Very Next Day - And Now I Must Rescue My Story - 01/12/10 10:00 AM
Late last night I started to write a post which I thought I saved to draft but voila away it went live.  I began to get comments and I thought I'd better finish the story as a few of the commenters were questioning the ending of my tale. Here is the incomplete post.  The Cat Came Back - But It Wasn't The Very Next Day - Or The Next - Or........
And here is the post in it's entirety.

oakville ontario: Oakville Ontario Sales Statistics - November 2009 - 12/16/09 10:46 PM

Home sales in Oakville, Ontario in November 2009 were up by a whopping 102 % over November 2008.  Sales in November 2008 were lower due to the downturn in the market with Canada in the throes of an economic recession.  Oakville's real estate market began to rebound in April of this year and it continues to be healthy.  Certain price ranges in Oakville are low in inventory and many sellers are receiving multiple offers on their properties.  Typically, new listings begin to appear on the market in January as well as listings that did not sell and were removed from the mls over the holiday … (5 comments)

oakville ontario: Friday's Fotos - Trees At Work - 12/11/09 05:37 PM
I read a post recently by fellow blogger Teral McDowell which got me thinking about the following photos I had taken recently.  Teral's post has a great photo of a building that has been held up by tree stumps for 108 years.  It wasn't until the skirting was taken away in an effort to move the building that the stumps were discovered.
The two photos below also show creative uses for trees and stumps.  I took the first photo below while walking along a trail in the neighbourhood of Glen Abbey in Oakville.  The fence in the photo spans the perimeter of the world … (31 comments)

oakville ontario: Wordless Wednesday - Take A Long Walk On A Long Pier - 12/02/09 11:07 PM
It's December and usually by now the weather has turned cold and the ground is covered with snow.  Not this year.  It was a bright, sunny, almost balmy day today here in Oakville.  A great day to take a walk on the pier at Bronte Harbour.
The boats and the crowds are gone and the calm waters of Lake Ontario sparkled in the sun.  It was a beautiful day to be outside and spend some quiet time taking in the picturesque scenery.

oakville ontario: What's New In Oakville ? - Canadian Tire Moves Up The Road - 11/15/09 07:47 PM
Canadian Tire is a well known retail institution in Canada. In business since 1925 and with close to 500 stores, it has been said that 85 percent of Canadians live within 15 minutes of a Canadian Tire store.  How many of you have scads of Canadian Tire money laying around the house?  How many of you buy gas at Canadian Tire, use the Canadian Tire Mastercard or buy at Mark's Work Warehouse, all Canadian Tire subsiduaries.
The ingenious Canadian Tire money  loyalty program began over 50 years ago and is still going strong.    Here in Oakville, the old, cramped  Canadian Tire … (6 comments)
