economics: My World: Prediction for the real estate market in 2012 - 01/07/12 10:24 AM
I've been researching on the Internet, looking for a credible set of predictions for the real estate market in 2012. There are plenty of prognosticators willing to promulgate their purview regarding the upcoming days. Unfortunately, a close read of their predictions reveals that almost all of them are biased towards their view of normalcy.
A brief description of the general features of the articles would include the generic statement that the market has reached the bottom and that things are getting better. This would seem to be justified based on the general behavior of the regional markets. Studies such as those … (1 comments)

economics: My World: Has the Real Estate Market Bottomed? - 12/14/11 09:05 AM
The news during the last week has been pretty grim. Every headline seems to be about either some really stupid government action which will adversely impact the economy or about some really stupid government action which adversely impacts the personal freedom of the populace. Yesterday just about topped the charts when I read that NAR had admitted that the home sales statistics for resales had been roughly doubled due to miscounting and also counting new home sales.
I don't know about you, but I've been suspicious of home sales statistics for a long time. When the NAR economist makes some rosy … (3 comments)

economics: My World: Fixing blame... - 11/16/11 12:13 PM
I'd like to give you a warning about my post today.  I'm going to address our national "laziness" in some rather harsh terms which you might find offensive.  If you're easily offended, I'm sorry, but you do have the right not to read this; just click off this post.  In my world, you don't have the right to go through life and never meet any circumstances, words, or people who offend you.
I don't know about you, but I was somewhat unhappy about being called lazy in the national press the other day.  It seems as if all Americans can wear … (3 comments)

economics: My World: Stopping Cold Turkey... - 11/08/11 09:43 AM
I woke up this morning wondering whether or not to write a post.  It seems like I should.  I've written one a day for the last year and yesterday accomplished my initial goal of making my 365th post.  Stopping cold turkey is not as easy as it sounds.  The interesting thing is that the feedback that I get from readers is rather addictive.  I guess that I've reached the point where it's easier to continue to write than to quit.  With that in mind, this is the first post of a series which I've decided to name, "My World."  It will … (2 comments)

economics: Joke of the day - #303: Balancing the checkbook... - 09/06/11 10:35 AM
I've been looking at our financial position recently and, as a result, I'm in a bad mood, so don't say you haven't been warned before you read this post.
Unless you're an accountant or an exceptionally well-organized person, you're likely to have had times when you couldn't get your checkbook to balance.  Sometimes this leads to creative solutions:
William was supposed to be taking care of the finances and balancing the checkbook, but his wife Susan kept having to straighten it out. Tired of having to balance his messed-up checkbook, Susan made a deal with him; she would look at it, … (5 comments)

economics: Joke of the day - #296: Whither the Weather? - 08/30/11 10:27 AM
Considering that the weather has been inclement for a large portion of the country, I thought that the following story would be appropriate:
Although he was a qualified meteorologist, Williams ran up a terrible record of forecasting for the TV news program.  He became something of a local joke when a newspaper began keeping a record of his predictions and showed that he'd been wrong almost three hundred times in a single year.
That kind of notoriety was enough to get him fired.
He moved to another part of the country and applied for a similar job. One blank on the … (0 comments)

economics: Joke of the day - #147: The $50,000 dog. - 04/03/11 10:33 AM
We are always engaged in commercial trade of one form or another throughout our lives.  Here's a story about a young boy who got started in trade early:
An economist was leaving his office building and saw a little boy sitting on the curb with a dog. The boy yelled at the economist, "Hey, Mister, how would you like to buy a dog."
The man was intrigued by this sales approach and asked the boy, "How much do you want for your dog."
The boy told him, "Fifty thousand dollars."
"Fifty thousand dollars!" the man repeated in astonishment. "What special tricks does … (1 comments)
