I have learned, not quickly unfortunately, but through a long series of disappointed looks from my kids and head shakes from my wife, what exactly proper etiquette looks like.  Or rather what it doesn't look like.

There was a time not so long ago that my phone was always on.  I had pockets in my pajamas so it could stay with me.  It rested assuredly on my nightstand as I slumbered.  After all, it's money on the other end of that call.  By Golly, it could be a true lending emergency.  I have to put out that fire.

I have found that my family is much happier with me, and admittedly I am much happier with them and myself, when I am actually with them.  Not on the phone, or the email or MLS.  I now clarify with my clients at the beginning of the relationship, that while they have my cell number it is not always answered.  However, voice mails are ALWAYS returned promptly.  Clients are welcome to call my cell at all hours of the day or night, but with a reasonable expectation that they will get my voice mail if it's an unreasonable time.  Unreasonable is a very subjective time of day.  It is unreasonable for me to take a call from a client while I am watching my teenage daughter cheer.  It is unreasonable to take a call from a client when I am coaching my 8-year olds soccer team.  I have even found it perfectly reasonable for me to finish a conversation with my wife and let that call go to voice mail.  These days when I am with my family I am truly with my family.  And it's funny, those emergencies that used to have to be handled immediately can actually wait till I finish dinner AND dessert.

Funny how we would never begrudge someone else for having these principles, but find it so difficult to allow it in ourselves.

Financing Myth 1
Infinity Financial Mortgage

Return of Self Fulfilled Prophesy
Infinity Financial Mortgage
I don't know if Nostradamus saw this coming 450 years ago, but if you keep your ear to the ground, or CNBC, you have seen this train wreck coming for weeks. Lehman Brothers is bankrupt, Merrill Lynch was sold for a deal that makes Manhattan Island…
Why politicians are like my 13-year old daughter
Infinity Financial Mortgage
I am constantly having this discussion with my 13-year old daughter. Whatever it is, come tell me. You would much rather I hear it from you first. If I hear it from someone else, you can't control the message. Facts and details that are clear to you…
Oil should drop
Infinity Financial Mortgage
Man, if there's one thing I hate doing, it's putting out a prediction. Unless it's for an 80-year time horizon you are setting yourself up not just to not be right, but to in fact be wrong. With that said, oil SHOULD drop Tuesday. After a big run up…
Moose burgers for the cabinet
Infinity Financial Mortgage
I get that a presidential candidate chooses a running mate that covers their weeknesses. Someone that IS what they AREN'T. I think somebody needs to tell Johnny that that can be taken to far. If the easy rap on Barak is the lack of experience how do…
What we need is another option
Infinity Financial Mortgage
Presidential politics are ALWAYS a challenge. The problem isn't so much Obama or McCain, Republican or Democrat, it's not having access to the moderate, progressive third option. With the national coverage that AR has I feel it i time for the people…
What we need is an alternate candidate
Infinity Financial Mortgage
The problem isn't so much Obama or McCain, it's the lack of a moderate, progressive third option. I know the Ron Paul movement is out there, but take a look at this video. I think we have a viable third choice that could really gain momentum…
networking or loitering II
Infinity Financial Mortgage
There is a fine line between Loitering and Hanging-around, I think the subtle difference is intent. Networking on the other hand is very intentional and you can see from a mile away. Just being in a room chatting with your fellow business people…

You will find that my blogs tend to occupy one of two categories. As a committed economy junkie I will frequently give you my insights on where I think the economy is going or what is causing it to be where it is. Please be patient with the other type which are the cathartic rants of a lender on the razor's edge of reason.
