blogging: Think Blogging Doesn't Work? Think Again - 01/19/12 09:14 AM
Many of you here at Active Rain don't know me because I've been recuperating from a bad case of blogging burnout.  So I haven't blogged much in the last year.  As I've struggled with getting back into blogging, I am constantly reminded of the benefits of not only Active Rain, but of the past blogs I have written.
Here is why.
Many of my friends I met at Active Rain have stayed in touch and have been great encouragers.  They have believed in me when I didn't believe in myself any longer.  You need those kinds of friends in life.  I … (14 comments)

blogging: Some Active Rain Things We Need to Know and Remember - 09/30/10 09:23 AM
Yesterday I wrote a post about using outside material.  The blog was inspired after I had read an AR post by a relative newbie.  The person had completely copied some outside material.  This is against the Active Rain rules, so I thought it was probably a good time for a reminder, not only for myself, but for the many new folks here in our community.
The responses to that blog pointed out a couple of things that I thought were interesting.  I think there are some things we need to remember here in our little community called Active Rain.
First, someone … (68 comments)

blogging: Dr. Bob Say's Write, Blog and Get Reblogged! - 09/10/10 10:41 AM
Okay everyone, Dr. Bob is in session.  Please have a seat.
I wrote a post the other day about checking your blog for Plagiarism.  And I got a lot of nice comments.  But I got something unexpected too.  I got a lot of people saying things like, "I don't think I'm a good enough writer to be reblogged" and "I doubt anyone would want to copy my stuff," and "It's hard to imagine that anyone would plagiarize my boring material."
EXCUSE ME?  DID I HEAR YOU CORRECTLY?
Hmmmm, it seems like we've got a bit of a lack of Blogger self-confidence here at Active … (19 comments)

blogging: Why We Blog...in Honor of My Mom Redux - 08/11/10 01:58 PM
Wednesday, August 11, 2010 - I just hung up the phone with Gabrielle Rhind.  Both of our mothers have Alzheimer's disease.  Gabrielle wrote a touching blog the other day that caught my attention.  Don't Force It's Better That Way Anyway
I wrote the following blog this past February.  I hope you find it as helpful today as I did then...and still do.
Today is a significant day for me.  That's because my dad is bringing my mom home.  This will be the first time since 1977 that mom will be living in Tulsa again.  Dad will soon follow...after he sells the … (1 comments)

blogging: Understanding Why We Choose Active Rain - 08/04/10 09:54 AM
From time to time, someone will ask what the significance of Active Rain is and why we blog here when we could be blogging elsewhere.  They'll point out that WordPress blogs give a person great Google Juice and that your blog should be on your website and other such things.
And they're right.  It is a good idea to do that stuff.  But blogging here at Active Rain is different than blogging on your own website.  Here, you're with people.  On your website or WordPress blog, you're more likely to be alone.  Oh sure, you might be a good enough writer … (10 comments)

blogging: It Made Me Cuss and The Dog Ran Away Shaking - 07/24/10 10:17 AM
I love blogging.  It gives me a voice in Real Estate far beyond the boundaries of Owasso and Tulsa.  And it has brought me lots of new friends here at Active Rain.  Blogging has also brought me clients.  And it gives me a great way to market my listings!
But Blogging is dangerous.  It can make you lose control of yourself momentarily if you're not careful.  All it takes is forgetting to SAVE your work while writing and then accidentally hitting the ENTER button on your keyboard.  That magical combination has the power to do two things:  1)Make your hard work instantly … (18 comments)

blogging: My Active Rain Success Story - 06/12/10 09:18 AM
My Active Rain Success story is a bit different from those you've been reading so far.  Mine is all about the power of blogging and how what you and I write can impact the world of real estate.
Recently, I was surfing the web when I came across an Entrepreneur.com article written by Greg Rand.  The article caught my attention because Greg was advising investors to use Zillow.com to obtain 10 year market stats.  Well, one of my hot topics as of late has been trying to figure out how Realtors can get their feet back under them now that our listing … (12 comments)

blogging: What They Don't Tell You About Active Rain - 03/30/10 08:40 AM
There is a secret about Active Rain that you don't know.
People talk about it at times, but not openly.  They just kind of refer to it in blogs and if you aren't paying attention, you miss it.  I've never really heard Bob Stewart or the other Active Rain folks talk about it openly either.  And its not because they have something to hide.  It's more because it is something that comes as a result of being in the Rain and having a game plan for your blogging.  So what is this secret that lurks below the blogosphere surface at Active Rain?  Its' this...
When … (133 comments)

blogging: Smart People - 01/20/10 07:40 AM
You know how it goes, right?  You meet someone and somewhere in the midst of the conversation Active Rain comes up.  It's usually in the course of comparing marketing methods and real estate stuff.  You talk about how great Active Rain is and how much you learn from everyone else and how your business has been transformed by blogging, but you can tell that the person isn't listening.  All that good advice is going right in one ear and out the other.  Or, if they are listening, there is the protest.  "Oh, I'm not a writer!" they say.  Or they'll say … (12 comments)

blogging: How to use your blog to enhance relationships with prospects and clients - 10/24/09 05:58 PM
In the world of blogging we are constantly contributing information to the real estate world.  Maybe it is redundant at times.  Maybe it is our take on a situation.  it certainly can generate spirited discussion here at Active Rain.  But the most important thing a blog can do is to help you to connect with your prospects and clients.
Here's how I use my blogs to do just that.
To connect with prospects and clients, I include a reference to my blog in my newspaper ads.  In the picture below you can see I am marketing two houses.  This ad was in … (21 comments)

blogging: Are You Wasting Your Time? - 07/17/09 07:16 AM
This morning I woke up and signed onto Active Rain to find an interesting post by Brian Tercero talking about David Gibbonsof Zillow telling everyone in the world that blogging is "so 2008."
You can read the post here
One thing that Brian said that jumped out at me was, "Customers demand a new level of customer service, they are spending hours searching for those brokers that embrace technology and use it to position themselves to be found. They are educating themselves with information those brokers are leaving for them to find on their web sites. And when these customers are … (3 comments)

blogging: Blogging, Active Rain and Google page placement - 02/25/09 07:10 AM
I'm getting ready to teach a class tomorrow.  The topic will be on internet placement and blogging.
When I began in real estate in 2007, I found Active Rain and immediately knew I had a home.  This is where I've spent my time blogging and learning.  And AR has been good to me.
But now I'm wondering if I should have been blogging in connection with my website also.  It seems like to me that you really want to push content out to the web in connection with your name and branding.  And I'm not sure I've done the best job … (11 comments)

blogging: Welcome Tammy and Rick! - 08/22/08 02:57 PM
I'm so excited I can't hardly stand myself today!
I recently invited two of my friends, who are also business colleages to jump into the Rain.  And they both accepted!  As I like to say, "How cool is THAT!"
Tammy Laakso is working towards being an appraiser.  She's completed about half of her course work and hours up to this point.  She works for me part time as my assistant and is also working towards getting her real estate license right now.  She's also a neighbor (she lives just up the road) and a good friend.
Rick Trowe is a client … (4 comments)

blogging: Writing Blogging Spelling and Misspelling - 08/22/08 08:24 AM
IT'S FUN FRIDAY HERE IN THE RAIN!!!
I found this description of a home for sale in my little part of the world.  Now for the fun part...what is wrong with the description???  Do you see anything?  Is there anything wrong with it???

I don't know about you, but I'm finding spelling and grammar mistakes creeping into real estate writing in huge numbers.  And the funny thing is that I'm not even any good at spelling and grammar.  Okay, maybe I'm okay at it, but in school I wasn't a straight A student in my English classes!  It is unfortunate that … (2 comments)

blogging: Be Careful What you Write! - 08/07/08 11:52 AM
Ah, the wonderful art of blogging.
You can say what is on your mindYou can give adviceYou can tell funny storiesYou can make commentsYou can even make yourself look very smart or very stupid, depending on what you say!
If you've been a blogger for very long, you know that sometimes people actually read the stuff we write.  And sometimes they make comments.  And sometimes they even take what we write to heart!
Take for example, Lindsey Clark, one of our newest AR members.
Lindsey had been reading some of my posts in regards to making the jump into real estate … (3 comments)
