In Alameda, and most assuredly in other cities, too, there is always a question on what alterations to a property will require permits. Granted, some folks deliberately sidestepped getting permits because of the cost, the time, and for other reasons. And others just didn't think or realize the work they're doing needed permits. On occasions, a missing or incorrect permit history may simply be a case of human error.

When I first moved to Alameda, they had just started publishing a glossy magazine appropriately named Alameda Magazine.

I was thrilled to read stories about the City. It was truly a great resource and guide. And from time to time, it has wonderful stories on the history of Alameda, who the premier builders and architects were, how the city was turned into an island, how the battle was waged to expand the island by building South Shore and creating lagoons where sea walls used to be.
If you're thinking of moving to Alameda, this is a great resource.

Well, it's here. Measure P which will increase in Alameda's city transfer tax iby 122% is effective December 12. In spite of efforts to dispute erroneous information, it passed by such a thin margin.
Yes On Measure P      12,114     50.66% No on Measure P         11,797     49.34%
Here are two of the most egregious claims by the proponents:
FALSE CLAIM: REALTORS ...will receive slightly smaller commissions.
FACT: Wrong, commissions for REALTORS are set by contract with sellers, not government. Transfer taxes are not deducted from real estate commissions and won't affect REALTOR income. FALSE CLAIM: Special Real Estate Interests.
