Ranchos de Taos, another interesting neighborhood in Taos County

History and tradition in Ranchos de Taos.

One of the most culturally significant communities in Northern New Mexico is Ranchos de Taos. Located on the main road, a few miles south of the Town of Taos, Ranchos, as it is called by locals, was originally a farming center for the local Indians. The Spanish settled it in 1716. Because of raiding nomadic Indians in the 1700's, Ranchos village was temporarily abandoned as the residents moved to Taos Pueblo for greater security for both the Taos Indians and Spanish settlers alike. By the end of the eighteenth century tranquility was restored and both groups returned to Ranchos de Taos.

The spectacular San Francisco de Asis Church has dominated the Ranchos Plaza since the Franciscan Fathers began construction in 1772. The church was completed in 1815 and it is described as one of the most beautiful buildings left by the early Spanish in the entire United States. Painted by Georgia O'Keefe and photographed by Ansel Adams and many others The Ranchos Church is one of the most photographed buildings in the country.

The interior of the church features huge vigas and intricately carved corbels as well as many European and New Mexican religious art works. The adobe walls are four feet thick and even today the mud plastering of the exterior walls is an annual event for the entire Ranchos community, which is very active, regularly worshiping in the Ranchos Church.

Today, Ranchos Plaza and its environs provide a picturesque setting for a number of art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. I especially like The Two Graces gallery, which offers, carved guardian angels, Buddha sculptures and a wonderfully eclectic mix of the humorous and precious.

History comes alive in the many fine old adobe buildings that remain both on the plaza and in the surrounding village of Ranchos de Taos, which continues to be true to an agricultural heritage that is cherished by the locals. Orchards, gardens, and livestock are visible in many of the residences, continuing traditions established in Rancho De Taos almost 300 years ago.

The Fabulous Rio Grande Gorge in Taos County, New Mexico

The Rio Grande Gorge is one of Taos County's most important attractions.

The Rio Grande Gorge in Taos County, New Mexico starts north of Questa and runs all the way past Pilar to the south. It is the deepest, at 800 feet, just south of the Gorge Bridge. World-class white water rafting and kayaking in up to Class V rapids top the list of recreational opportunities but fly-fishing, rock climbing, hiking and camping attract thousands of enthusiasts year round every year.

Especially popular are the Wild Rivers Recreation Area on the north end of the Rio Grande Gorge and the Orilla Verde Recreation Area on the south. These are both maintained by the BLM and each offers put in sites for boaters and well maintained campgrounds. The La Junta Point at Wild Rivers offers an inspiring view of the confluence of the Rio Grande and Red rivers.

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the fifth highest suspension bridge in the United States soaring 650 feet over the river. It was built in 1965 and is a cantilever truss-type that spans the Gorge for 1,280 feet. Always a popular tourist attraction, the Gorge Bridge has several viewing platforms that extend from the sides of the bridge to provide spectacular views and photo opportunities for the fearless. Featured in Natural Born Killers, Twins and several other movies, the Gorge Bridge is also the site of suicides every year.

For the more laid back local or visitor the Rio Grande Gorge features several hot springs. Another less strenuous pastime is wildlife viewing. Eagles abound here. nesting in the high canyon walls. The exotic Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep were reintroduced here several years and they thrive on the craggy walls of the Gorge. Protected by the Endangered Species Act these graceful creatures have found a challenging environment for their new home in the Rio Grande Gorge. And as the petroglyphs on the rock walls attest, their ancestors knew this area very well.

The Taos area abounds with attractions and The Rio Grande Gorge area is one the most spectacular.

Arroyo Seco, New Mexico a charming village near Taos

Arroyo Seco is one of the most charming communities in the entire Taos Valley.

Located at an elevation of 7,634 feet, Arroyo Seco is one of the most charming communities in all of Taos County. With a population of 1,144 as of the 2000 census, Seco is big enough to have its own post office yet small enough that you know most of your neighbors when you pick up your mail.

The origins of Arroyo Seco began in 1716 when it was deeded to General Lucero de Godoy by the Viceroy of Mexico. General de Godoy never settled here so the grant eventually went to Joaquin Codallos y Rabal in 1745. Later, in 1804, settlement began in earnest when two brothers, Cristobal and Jose Gregorio Martinez from Rio Arriba County built homes and started farming here, not quite in Seco's present location but nearer the mountain, in the shadow of El Salto (the leap) with its seven waterfalls that cascade down the mountain.

To add to the charm of Arroyo Seco is the centerpiece of the community. The Church of the Most Holy Trinity was completed in 1834 and is true to the style of the early mission churches of New Mexico. Constructed of adobe bricks the walls are five feet thick at the base tapering up to three feet at the top. Jose de Gracia Gonzales, the famed Santero from Arroyo Hondo was said to have used his wife as the model for the beautiful altar screen which was completed in 1861.

The charming community of Arroyo Seco is best known in the summer months for its Fourth of July parade that usually has as many parade participants as it has parade watchers. Because Seco is almost equally distant from both the Town of Taos and Taos Ski Valley this is a frequent stopping off place where tourists and locals alike savor the charm and hospitality of this most picturesque place.

Home to friendly bars and fine dining restaurants, an old time general store, potters and painters galleries, jewelers, sculptures, and women's boutiques, and a Youth Hostel as well as several world class bed and breakfasts, the charm of the Village of Arroyo Seco is appreciated by all, whether for an afternoon or a lifetime.

First major snowfall of the season.

Last night and early this morning a heavy rain pounded the valley and through the clouds rising from the mountain peaks we saw the evidence of the first major snowfall of this season.

Of course it has snowed already in the high country, reports from people who hiked up to Williams Lake last weekend said they were able to scrape up enough of the white stuff to have a snowball fight. But this snowfall was significant, reaching down the mountain to probably 10.000' and it's safe to say that it won't be going away until the runoff begins in the spring and early summer.

At lower elevations, and in the valley, it almost always snows before Halloween. And with it only a week away there's still the possibility that one day soon there will be a significant snowfall in the low country. If you can call 7,000' low country.

No doubt the skiers and boarders were overjoyed to see this first major snowfall, especially with all the talk about La Nina and the chance of warmer and drier weather this winter.

Let's just hope that we're fortunate enough to have another winter like the past few, with enough significant snow events, the resorts at Taos Ski Valley, Red River, Angel Fire, Sipapu and Costilla will continue to provide high adventure for locals and visitors alike.

Autumn in Taos, New Mexico

Written by my marketing Director and writer extraordinaire, Susan Mihalic

Autumn in Taos, New Mexico

The light is changing. The sun is at a different angle, and the quality of the light is deeper, richer, more golden. Fall is a month away yet, but the high desert abides by its own seasonal rhythms.

In early August, the apricots ripen and fall to the ground, and neighbors and strangers alike ask us if they can gather the fruit. The answer is yes. There are always enough apricots to go around. The days are still hot, but live here long enough, and you know that the deep gold of apricot skins is the first flush of fall.

Just as the apricot trees finish producing an insane bounty of fruit, the sunflowers begin to bloom wildly in the disturbed earth on either side of the road. Some stretches of road are flanked by miles of sunflowers. The petals may look summery to some, but to me, they are another sign of the coming autumn.

The sunflowers are still rioting when the chile roasters, men in aprons and baseball caps, appear in front of the grocery stores and in vacant lots all around town. Big burlap bags of green chile are for sale in the stores and from the backs of pickup trucks. The men dump an entire burlap bag of chiles into huge metal mesh drums, which revolve over an open flame. The intense heat blisters the skin of the chiles-and the smell of roasting chile, pungent and rich and somehow broad, is the first scent of fall.

The chile roasters pack up and leave town about the time the chamisa blooms, cottony yellow-gold tufts of tiny flowers against the leaves of the gray-green bush. In autumns past, I have ridden my horse across the plains where it blooms. We called it sage-jumping, although it was more like sage-stirring as her long legs moved through the chamisa and the sagebrush, releasing clouds of sharp fragrance. Several times we saw migrating tarantulas. Once we saw a baby diamondback sunning itself, not in the least concerned with us. In the fall, even my horse took on a different scent, a spiciness that was distinct from the way she smelled at other times of the year. But always good. Horses always smell good to me.

The chamisa blooms are losing their color when the first gold appears in the mountains. The aspens are changing. High in the mountains, and again on horseback, I have seen red aspens, but predominantly they are gold.

The aspens are peaking when the leaves on the cottonwoods in town begin to change. Cottonwoods turn no other color but gold, but what the palette lacks in variety it makes up in intensity.

How to make a financial plan for your Home.

Since your home is probably the biggest investment you have, it is a really good idea to create a financial plan to protect it.

What should you include in the Plan? What about including repairs, upgrades, mortgage, insurance and taxes in the plan. So many people are losing their homes because they did not plan for any of these items.

Once you have a handle on your home's expenses, you can devise a long-term strategy that will let you live there for years with maximum enjoyment and minimum worry.

The mortgage: Paying it. You already shell out a lot for your mortgage, but can you afford to pay more. Even a little extra each month adds up. If your mortgage is $200,000, and you have a 20 year fixed rate mortgage at 5%. Your monthly payment is about $1300. If you manage to pay an extra $100 per month you will end up saving almost $15,000 in interest. Not bad.

Insurance: Protecting you home. Homeowners Insurance should probably have full replacement coverage. This sounds simple, but be aware that you own not only your home but the land that it sits on as well. You may have paid $250,000 for you home but the replacement cost might only be $100,000 to rebuild it. Your policy limits should reflect this.

The differences are regional. Where land is at a premium, like Aspen, Colorado, a higher percentage of the purchase cost is for the property. Where land is cheap, like parts of southern New Mexico, most of value of a new home is in the house itself. Even in a shifting market the replacement costs won't change much.

You can ask your insurance agent about discounts. Making structural improvements can lover rates. Membership in certain groups such as Veterans' organizations may entitle you for some breaks on premiums.

Repairs and renovations: got to do it. Some changes you make are by choice and some by need. It is a good idea to have a house fund for those repairs that are needed. Your home is your biggest asset. All the financial advisors I know have said that you should resist the temptation to take care of repairs with a Home Equity Loan.

Taxes: Yes you have to pay them . If a bank holds your mortgage , they may already handle your real estate taxes with an escrow account. If so this expense is built into your monthly mortgage payment. Check your statement to find out if the taxes are included. In Taos, the property taxes are really low, but in some parts of the country the tax may be in the 1000's each year.

I hope I have encouraged you to create a financial plan for your home. Keep yourself covered. A good plan will give you peace of mind.

Oh I get it you don't believe me so get it appraised!

It should not be a big surprise that there are still home sellers who have not caught up with the market.

If you are a listing agent you might be asked why is my property not getting shown, or how come the price reduction didn't work?

The truth is, the market has shifted and is nothing like we were accustomed to just a few years ago. I really feel for home owners who need to sell, especially those who bought at the height of the market and now find themselves carrying a mortgage that is larger than what the home is worth.

With that being said, both sellers and agents have to pay attention to the trends in the existing market. So, here are a few situations to ponder.

What if as a seller you just agreed to a price change but you still don't have any showings?

The market is liquid and it is not uncommon for your competitors to make even bigger cuts which would immediately put you at a disadvantage. This could mean you might have to cut even further.

But my house is assessed at $380,000 why am I getting offers only in the $200,000's?

Just a few years ago it was not uncommon to see a house assessed at $200,000 selling for $400,000 and this made home sellers happy. That was a market called a Seller's Market, in other words more buyers and fewer properties. The well known rule of supply and demand dictates that a higher demand with a limited supply will result in higher prices. Today the scenario is so different. Very high inventory and few buyers makes this a Buyer's Market. In this case buyers want to spend less and get much more for their money.

How come my neighbor's house sold for so much more than I am being offered although my home is larger?

Mr. Seller take a close look at the neighbor's property. Did you notice the nicely landscaped yard? And do you remember the large renovation project they did a year ago? Well, curb appeal and the condition of the home does matter. Do you remember the checklist of the things you were told you would need to do if you wanted to get more for your home? How much of that list has been completed?

Please don't tell me what potential buyers have to say about my home. Despite what they have to say, I know my home is lovely and worth every dollar I am asking.

If potential buyers are saying similar things and making similar offers this is an indication that this is what the market will bear. Sorry, you really don't get to make this decision, buyers do.

So, you have the feedback, the offers, the comparative market analysis and you still disagree. Yes I get it you don't believe me. May I make one final suggestion? Get it appraised.

The appraisal will show you what your home is truly worth in this market, and what a bank will finance. The question is: Do you really want to sell your home or are you waiting for the market to come back? Keep in mind that it may be a long wait.

5 Tips for Buying a Foreclosure

I just read a really good article which was on the National Association of Realtors' website. 5 Tips for Buying a Foreclosure was the title and I will just give you a short overview.

Having listed a few foreclosure properties myself and having looked over the advice in the article, I think these tips are legitimate and very helpful.

When lenders take over a home, they want to sell it as quickly as possible. Since lenders aren't in the real estate business, they turn to real estate broker for help marketing their properties. Buying a foreclosed home can be a bargain, but the process can be problematic.

The first tip is to work with a Realtor who has foreclosure experience.

2. Be ready for complications. Ask your Realtor to recommend a real estate attorney who will explain your state's foreclosure process. Be patient.

3. Work with your agent to set a price. Ask your agent to show you closed sales of comparable homes. These sales will show you what the market value of the foreclosed home is. Start with an offer well under the market value to see if the lender may be in a hurry to get rid of the house.

                                            Good deals on Foreclosed Properties

4. Get your financing in order. Many Lenders require buyers to submit a financing preapproval letter with the purchase agreement. They often reject all contingencies. The good news is that most foreclosures can close quickly.

5. Expect an as-is sale. Be sure to have enough money left after the sale to make repairs. Most lenders may give you credit for some minor repairs, but will not help with major problems with the foreclosure>
Don't be caught by surprise and make sure that you have money to make the home livable after closing.

I hope these tips on buying a foreclosed property have been helpful to you. It is a great time to buy with low mortgage rates and many great deals on foreclosed properties. Have fun, be patient, and make a great deal.

Title Insurance: What the heck is it?

Well let's start with a basic idea. Fire Insurance protects against losses from fire. Collision insurance guards against the cost of a damaged car. Well you get the idea.......

Title Insurance protects your title to real estate that you are about to buy. Real estate has been considered man's most valuable possession. It is so basic a form of wealth that many laws have been enacted to protect ownership of land and the buildings which stand on the land.

You should know that whenever you buy property that the owner who is selling it to you has strong rights, as do his/her family and heirs. There may be other entities who have some claim to the property as well. Government may have some claim based on Taxes. Contractors can have claims based on tasks performed and not paid for. A title search will uncover unpaid taxes, mortgages, easements etc. which can affect title to real estate.

The Title Insurance Policy that you are given at the day of closing on your property will protect you against any Cloud on the Title. It is assurance that every possible problem related to Title which is found in the public record has been brought to your attention and such defects will be taken care of before you buy. It also is insurance that any undiscovered claim covered by your policy, will be taken care of by the insurance.

                                             CLOUDLESS TITLE ON YOUR PROPERTY!

In other words: Title Insurance protects you agains hidden risks in Title. With it you are covered for Title Problems.

Relax and enjoy. You are protected by Title Insurance.

My Neighborhood in Taos, New Mexico

I was having one of those moments so please bear with me. I was sitting in my office and thinking about Taos, where I live. I just couldn't sit in the office a minute longer so I grabbed my camera and set out for a stroll around the Neighborhood.

I started my walk around the block at LeDoux Street. I could barely go a step without seeing a beautiful sight. I just kept stopping and peering over walls or at shop entry ways. There is a great story about the magical light in Taos, and all I had to do was step out of my office to experience the phenomenon. Artists abound in Taos and my little stroll reinforced the reason so many come to Taos.

I won't keep jabbering about the beauty and charm. I will just let the photos speak the thousand words.

Can you guess where you are?

Message from my Listing coordinator to Sellers

Dear Sellers,

Message from my Listing coordinator to Sellers.

I am not a Realtor. Nor do I play one on TV. I'm a listing coordinator, and I'm here to give you some tough love.

Your agents have given you tips on how to help them sell your home. They've used nice words like "curb appeal" and "staging." You may or may not have complied with their suggestions about cleaning up and decluttering. You should. They know what they're talking about. You've sold several houses in your lifetime? Good for you. They've sold hundreds, maybe thousands. Listen to them.

Meanwhile, I'm here to get a little more specific about things that will help my boss sell your home. You don't make any money, and neither does she, until your house sells. Since she pays my salary, I would very much like your house to sell.

I have observed a few things in some of the houses we've listed that lead me to believe that not all of you grasp the more subtle points of staging and curb appeal. Therefore, I'll be blunt (remember, this is tough love).

Don't leave articles of personal hygiene hanging in the middle of the shower rod-or, in fact, anywhere in sight-when we come to photograph your house or when there's a showing. I don't mean your blow dryer or your electric razor. I'm talking about items that are more personal. I'm not touching them, so you can't count on me to move this stuff when I go to photograph the bathroom. If I can't shoot around it, I'm not making pictures of the bathroom. More importantly, you don't want the buyer to remember your house this way: "Oh, yeah, the one with the . . . oh, yeah. That. On the shower rod."

Pack away the dead animal parts. You might be surprised by the number of prospective buyers who don't find dead animal parts appealing, particularly when the parts are combined to create some unholy creature such as the moose-deer (moose antlers on a taxidermied deer head) or the jackalope (antelope antlers on a taxidermied jack rabbit). You don't want the buyer to remember your house this way: "Oh, yeah, the one with the . . . what was that thing, anyway?"

Don't use a .308 Winchester bullet in place of a hasp or a pin to secure a lock. Or really . . . any bullet. You don't want the buyer to remember your house this way: "Oh, yeah, the one with the big scary bullet instead of a padlock."

OK, are we clear? Keep your personal hygiene practices private. No dead animal parts. No bullets in place of an ordinary hasp. I know, it's not quite as colorful this way, and it may not say "you," but buyers must be able to visualize themselves in your home. Please. Help us help you.

Sincerely,

Listing Coordinator (Susan)

Some Great Reasons to Move in the Summer.

Some Great Reasons to Move in the Summer.

I have been reading a book about Real Estate Markets appropriately named SHIFT. According to some experts and many years of statistics, home sales are seasonal. The best and most prolific buying season is Summer. June, July, and August are the top selling or buying months. I started to wonder why?

Here are some reasons I think that Summer would be a great time to move:

People choose to sell during the summer because the weather is nicer, and school is out. Families seem to have more flexible time to house hunt.

Families with kids want to move before a new school year starts . Summer is a great time for children and adults to play outside and meet new friends. There are lots of summer activities for kids such as camp or Little League. Neighborhoods tend to have more community activities in the Summer. Cookouts and pool parties will often include the whole neighborhood. It is a great way for your child to avoid that new kid school syndrome.

There is more sunshine and more daylight hours. Houses seem so much more cheerful during the sunny long days of summer. This is a great benefit to both buyers and sellers.

You can't beat the curb appeal of summer blooming plants and flowers. Looking out the kitchen window into a beautiful summer garden makes a house feel like a home. It sure beats looking at a pile of snow and a snow shovel. The summer outdoor spaces seem to extend the living space in a house.

This may seem silly, but summer is garage sale season. You can get rid of all of your clutter. People will come by to see your "stuff" and that may turn into an opportunity to talk about your house and the desire to sell it. Word of Mouth is the best advertisement and your neighbor may tell a friend about the garage sale and then about the house for sale.

If you need tips on getting your home ready for sale or the buying process, please contact me. Summer is the time to sell!

What Home Sellers can do to help their Realtor get their property SOLD ( part II)

What Home Sellers can do to help their Realtor get their property SOLD ( part II)

1. Maintain a good attitude. You know that most markets are squirrelly right now. There are no magic pills or magic fairy dust to get your home sold. You can make sure that your house is in good condition, and priced to sell. The location is the location and you can't change that.

2. Tell your Realtor if you have concerns about anything in the selling process. So many people think that they are experts in the Real Estate Market and will give you advice about what will sell your home. Don't listen! Talk with your Realtor who actually knows what the market is doing and what changes are happening every day. I don't talk with my Doctor about my car repair, and I assume you don't either. Good Local Realtors will be experts on your local Real Estate Market (but not on your gall bladder).

3. Consider every offer on your property. We tell our clients that the offer is just the beginning of the conversation about your property. You have the right to counteroffer and to have your Realtor negotiate the terms of the offer. The Buyer liked your property better than other properties they saw ,so keep that in mind.

4. It may take more time to sell in the current economic climate. Be realistic about your current market. Ask your Realtor to show you how many houses are on the market and how long they are taking to sell. Ask for comparable homes to yours and in similar price ranges. Being realistic will take some of the stress out of selling.

5. Have your Realtor explain the process that follows getting your property under contract. Your Agent will work hard to make the closing process as easy as possible for you. There are always some glitches, but most of them can be overcome. Stay positive and keep the faith!

What Home Sellers can do to help their Realtor get their property SOLD

What Home Sellers Can do to help their Realtor get their Property SOLD. After you have chosen a Realtor to walk you through the process of selling your property, there are a quite a few things you can do to work with your agent to speed the sales process.

1. Choose a Realtor and then know that you have formed a partnership. The Realtor only gets paid if your property sells. Your goals are the same and it helps if both Seller and Realtor are working in conjunction toward that goal.

2. Be absolutely honest with yourself and with your Realtor about your expectations. If you want lots of communication from your Realtor, tell them upfront. If you only want to know when an offer comes in, let your Realtor know that also.

3. Be sure that you understand the status of the real estate market in your area. All Real Estate is local. The market value of your property is determined by the prices for which similar properties have sold. If your home is 2300 square feet, has one acre of land, is new and in a great location, your Realtor will help you price your home to reflect the sales of similar houses in similar neighborhoods of similar size and condition.

Those prices can change just like stocks. You may buy a stock for $50 a share and it may go up to $100 a share or it may go down to $25 a share. Real Estate is similar in many ways. A property is worth what the market will support.

4. Keep your house showing ready. Declutter, neutralise, leave cabinets and closets with extra space in each. When a buyer comes to view your property, the curb appeal is the first chance you have to impress them. Do a great job.

Taos, New Mexico is Dog Friendly!

Taos, New Mexico is Dog friendly!

I have a really rather fabulous pound-hound named Daisy. She is mostly golden retriever and the rest is a whole lot of love. We live in an in-town neighborhood on a dead end street in Taos, New Mexico.

Each morning when the weather permits, I take Ms. Daisy on a mile stroll around our neighborhood. We visit with the two dogs across the street- a Bassett Hound and a Chihuahua, who live inside a fence. Next door also reside two dogs. They all like to sniff and bark greetings.

We cruise up to the dead end and cross over a small bridge, where we meet up with Red Dog . (Her real name is Maggie, but I didn't know that when we met her.) She likes to come with us on our morning cruise. She also likes to meet me when I return from work each evening in case I happen to happen to have a little morsel of something to eat.

We walk up to a development which was the old hospital in Taos and now is offices. There we normally encounter some prairie dogs and one unfortunate cat who still has not figured out that if she runs, Red Dog and Daisy will tree her. They will also stay in rapt attention at the tree base until I drag them away.

We all three do our laps around the old hospital complex and then head home. By this time, we have several other doggy friends in tow. They all know that if they come to my house that they will be given the ever divine Dog bone (large) biscuits.

I must say that I am well trained and also obedient. Daisy thinks I am the perfect owner-person. My neighbors are also getting trained. Red Dog and Daisy have the neighborhood houses marked for the human friends who will give them pets and better yet. Treats!

Taos, New Mexico, Kit Carson Park

Taos, New Mexico Parks. There are lots of public parks in Taos but the park that isclose to the Heart of Taos is Kit Carson Park. It is named after, guess who? Kit Carson the famous Scout who lived in Taos for many years. He is buried in a small cemetery in the park itself.

Kit Carson Park is a beautiful Green spot with absolutely wonderful views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The park has three baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, two tennis courts, lots of walking paths and is open to people and dogs.

Taos Wool Festival is held here as is Taos Solar Festival. The Wool Festival is a haven for weavers who display and sell their wares. The Solar Fest is a three day event which features many famous musicians and also offers displays of solar technology.

Today, May 7, 2010, starts a juried Arts and Crafts Fair. The artists who participate create very unique and quality products and art. I never go to the Fair without seeing something that I must take home. Beware!

Taos Little League uses the park all summer. The volley ball courts are available for public use and there is a tournament at the end of the summer. The trails around the park are used often. Each Easter there is a huge Easter Egg Hunt for kids.

Often at lunch time, I go for a quick stroll around the trails. I always feel refreshed after being there. I visit Kit's Grave when I go and think back on the wild and wonderful history of Taos.

Kit Carson Park is within easy walking distance of some superior restaurants. I suggest taking a walk around the Park and then a great Sunday Brunch at the Taos Inn or Café Renato. This weekend would be the perfect time to come because of the Crafts Fair.

Around Taos Plaza and Bent Street

Around Taos Plaza and Bent Street. I must admit that I went and bought a new "flip" camera which allows you to take simple videos and post them on the web.

Well, yesterday I just couldn't stay in the office for one more second because; we were having the first really lovely, warm day in a long time. As an excuse, I went out with my cute little new video camera and shot short videos around Taos Plaza and on Bent Street.

For those of you who have not been to Taos, the center of town is a large lovely Plaza. The buildings around the Plaza are pueblo style (a style which is prevalent in town and one copied from the Taos Pueblo.)

The Plaza is a great place to stroll. Many lovely shops showcase Art, and Jewelry. The Open Space Gallery is an artist co-op where you can find Photography, Paintings and hand crafted items.

There is a nice coffee shop in the bottom of La Fonda Hotel. There is also a very fine mineral/rock shop which carries jewelry by well known artists.

From the Plaza there are two alley ways which lead to Bent Street which is a walking mall area filled with Bookstores, shops, coffeehouses and other interesting spots.

Bent Street is a great place to go, sit and people watch. Down another small street there are numerous art galleries. Parks Gallery specializes in modern art. Robert Parsons Gallery is known for housing some of the old Taos masters as well as other beautiful collections. At the end of this small alley is the Jerry Mann Studio which is well worth visiting.
