R-E-S-P-E-C-T - 07/31/10 10:52 AM
Customer service has gone down hill. I think most of us will agree with that. It's actually to the point that if you get mediocre customer service you feel satisfied, and good customer service actually surprises you.
And there have been many discussions in Active Rain about how if we do our best and work for our clients we will get referrals and repeat business and that's the best way to stay in business. And I won't argue with that.
But how many give EXCEPTIONAL customer service? Customer service that is so great people will actually feel guilty about even thinking about … (24 comments)

It has been a couple months and we are still at the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society waiting for a forever home. We are very sweet and would make a lovely pet. We understand that we may not be adopted together but it would be best if we could. Please come and adopt us!

Bingeman's - My How It's Changed. - 07/29/10 09:54 AM
I'm old.
Know how I know this?
Because while I'll was looking around for things to do this weekend I stumbled upon Bingeman's Web site http://www.bingemans.com and was reminded how much it's changed.
Now these changes didn't happen overnight. Oh no. I wouldn't feel so darn old if they had. These changes happened over years and years - 32 of them - since I was 14 and used to rollerskate there.
I remember living on Confederation Drive, putting on my skates on a Friday night, rollerskating down Lorraine Avenue to River Road, crossing over Victoria and then skating through all the twisty turning roads … (4 comments)

It's Easier to Hit that X - 07/28/10 09:27 AM
If you've got a Web site with your e-mail address on it, or if you've ever subscribed to anything on-line, chances are your e-mail address has been added to someone's distribution list, and you're going to be asked if you want to find your soulmate, make some big money fast, or help some poor guy from the other side of the world get rid of money that he just doesn't want anymore.
And chances are you are going to get upset because you're so tired of getting all this junk e-mail and you're pretty sure there's a law that says they aren't allowed to … (15 comments)

Just My Two Cents: Zero Tolerance Under Age 22 - 07/26/10 12:48 PM
This morning I heard that drivers under the age of 22 will not be allowed to have a single drop of alcohol before getting behind the wheel of a car (or as some say, drivers 21 years and younger). That there will be zero tolerance for those who do.
As of August 1, 2010 those caught will receive an immediate suspension and a fine of up to $500.00. A second offense will mean a 90-day suspension, and a third offense will result in a license cancellation.
Why pick on this age?
Well, apparently, statistics show that drivers between the ages of 19-21 are almost … (10 comments)

My Joker's a Star! - 07/26/10 10:03 AM
As many of you know I am hosting a Pets, Pets, Pets Contest on Facebook. The official link is www.facebook.com/petspetspetscontest.
So far there are 132 entries. Contest ends on midnight, September 6, 2010.
Now, Joker was very upset with me because, as a relative of mine, I wouldn't let him enter - he really thought he had a chance of winning that $100.00 Global Pet Foods Gift Certificate, and doesn't understand the trivial matters of humans.
So, to help appease him I submitted his picture to the Global Pet Foods Pet of the Week and HE'S BEEN FEATURED!

I'm such a proud … (8 comments)

My Dog. My Saviour. - 07/24/10 12:00 PM
Yesterday morning a few storms rolled through the area.
My dog, Joker, isn't fond of storms - he doesn't freak out or anything - he just doesn't like to be in harm's way.
Well, apparently he doesn't like me to be in harm's way either.
My bed is in front of a big window. The blind was up and the window was open. I love listening to the rain, and if there's a good storm that's a bonus.
Joker doesn't see it that way, and yesterday morning was no exception.
At first he was on the bed with me, looking a little … (10 comments)

Go Wild!! - 07/22/10 09:38 AM
The African Lion Safari located at RR#1 Cambridge, Ontario NIR 5S2 has been open since 1969. That's right...1969. And they started with just 40 lions in 3 reserves.
Today they have over 1000 animals of over 100 different species. I'd say they've grown!
Their objective: "maintaining self-sustaining populations of species in decline". And since they've successfully bred 30 species that are considered endangered, and 20 or more species that are considered threatened, I'd say they have been successful.
What have they done so far in 2010? "Jake" an Asian Elephant was born as a result of artificial insemination - the first ever in Canada.

Looking for a special owner for a special dog - is it you? - 07/21/10 02:17 PM
Hello, my name is Ciara. I am a one year old, spayed female, black and tan Dobermann. I didn't always look as good as my picture. When I first arrived here at the Centre back in February, I was far from being the good-looking girl that I am now. I was and still am suffering from Generalized Demodectic Mange. What is demodectic mange you ask? It is a skin disease caused by tiny mites that inhabit everybody's bodies. When your immune system is very low, like mine was, the mites take control. The end result is a dog that has lesions … (14 comments)

Strike One! Strike Two! - 07/21/10 01:38 PM
Sunday night my husband and I drove to see my daughter and her boyfriend in Hamilton and have supper. (We also went to see my new grandkitty Nero.)
My daughter only has a small junior one-bedroom apartment, so we go out for supper whenever we visit.
We chose Kelsey's.
We were seated inside as soon as we walked in and moments later we were asked for our drink order. Then later, we ordered our meals along with two appetizers...shrimp and spinach dip.
And then we talked. And we waited. We talked some more. And we waited. We talked a little more, … (8 comments)

Old Dogs... - 07/19/10 04:15 PM
Oh, my Joker. He just turned eight this month and it seems to me like he's listening a little less than he did before. He's getting older...could it be his hearing?
Mmmmaybe.

But then my other dog Almo did the same thing when he got around that age, and he heard "cookie", "supper", "treat", and "walk" just fine. As does Joker.
But tell him to stop barking or come when he's in the middle of sniffing something good or to put his leash on and suddenly he's got a hearing problem.
Is it convenient hearing, perhaps?

Taking A Hike? Don't Pick Up Any Unwanted Guest! - 07/13/10 01:08 PM
Al & Peggy Cunningham were nice enough to blog about this invasive and potentially dangerous weed, so I thought it important to re-blog.

Unions - Yes or No? - 07/12/10 11:01 AM
I understand that at one point there was a need for unions in North America. Workers were overworked, underpaid, employers got richer while the poorer got poorer and it was like that across the board.
But I have to question the value of Unions today.
Yes, there are some employers who take advantage of their employees - I've worked for them.
But the beauty part of working today is, I had a choice as whether to stay and take what the employer had to dish out (or not dish out), or I could find another job.
Job hunting is never easy. … (14 comments)

They Don't READ, They SKIM - 07/09/10 10:20 AM
People don't take the time to read anymore. They skim.
Case and point:
My niche is helping people who have pets sell their homes. For fun I am running a pet photo contest. I have two ads running for that contest. One is on-line; one is in the paper. The on-line ad says for people to contact me for more information. The paper ad says to go to www.facebook.com/petspetspetscontest for more information. Neither of the ads say to submit their photos to me.
BUT
Approximately 80% of the e-mails I've received have a picture attached.
This is small thing and it just … (27 comments)

Animals Aren't Ornaments - 07/08/10 03:14 PM
So, you've decided you want to get a pet - a dog, a cat, or how about a rabbit?
And even better, you've decided you want to rescue an animal. So, off you go to your local animal shelter (humane society, SPCA).
And you get overwhelmed. There are so many animals you want to take them all home!
Look, that one is soooo cute!
Oh look at how pretty those eyes are!
Oh my, her colour is so beautiful!

Those things are great, but you need to look passed the pretty fur and deep blue eyes. You need to pick … (8 comments)

Feeling the Heat? Pool Down in Kitchener - 07/07/10 09:57 AM
Swimming is a great way to cool down and is one of the best ways to exercise:
It limits the amount of stress on your body while exercising - your weight in water is about 1/10 of your weight on land. It can soothe your mind as well as exercise your body by regulating breathing and stimulating circulation. It is a great warm up or cool down exercise to use with any other work out. And then of course, it can relieve the stress caused by kids on holidays who are hot, but still have energy to burn :)

It's Cool to Keep Your Head - 07/06/10 09:50 AM
9:30 AM. 27 Celcius (80 Fahrenheit). Feels like 35 (95).
The winds are calm - not that it matters because the wind yesterday was like air blowing out of a furnace.
So people are hot.
Some probably aren't sleeping well. They're uncomfortable, sweaty. They aren't eating properly - just don't feel like it.
They are miserable. And this is the perfect recipe for short tempers.
But if you get mad, your adrenalin kicks in, making your heart pump faster, your body temperature gets hotter...so smile.
If someone cuts you off - smile.
If someone makes a comment that rubs you the wrong … (8 comments)

A Little Bit of Waterloo Region's Heritage on Canada Day - 07/05/10 09:40 AM
On Thursday, July 1 - Canada Day - The Doon Heritage Cross Roads hosted an open house. I hadn't been there since on a school field trip many moons ago, and neither had hubby, so we decided to take a stroll over. (We live about 5 minutes away).
There had been a few changes from what I remembered. For one, they had decided to focus on the year 1914. Why?
According to their Web site:
Waterloo County was at its most well developed as a distinctive culture. The eve of the first Great War was the exciting end of an era … (8 comments)
