And It Makes a Great Cup of Tea - 08/31/10 11:02 PM
I've always hated Kitchener water. It's the only water I've ever had that actually has an aftertaste. I've been told it's totally safe to drink, but the taste....ewww. And then I got hooked on drinking bottled water. I'm a teetotaler, so when I had my first cup of tea made from distilled water I was hooked. No hard water slime, and it tasted like...how can I describe it? Oh yeah. Tea. So we got a Culligan Water Cooler, which by the way lasted for over 10 years (a great product). But when it quit we had some decisions to make. Buy

Condo Rules are Not Unreasonable. - 08/31/10 09:54 AM
During a conversation with my condo's building manager, she stated that a few residents have told her they don't like all the notices that are put up reminding people about the by-laws. The most recent notices are: pick up after your dog, don't let dogs pee in the parking garage, and steps to follow to keep the building secure. I responded that if people were following the by-laws, rules and regulations to begin with, there would be no need for the reminders. Now, in general, most by-laws, rules and regulations in a condominium corporation are no different than any other rule

Fantastic News, Makes This A Thankful Thursday! - 08/27/10 01:28 PM
Al and Peggy Cunningham posted today about their dearly-loved drink, coffee. In all fairness I thought I would add a little about the health benefits of Tea in this reblog, since I can't drink coffee - it makes me nauseous and gives me the shakes. If you're like me and would prefer Tea take note of the 8 reasons to drink it as per a Canadian Living article: Strengthens immune system. Fights bad breath and helps prevent tooth decay. Helps build strong bones. Protects the heart. Cleans intestines and prevents aging. Reduces risk of Ovarian Cancer. Helps eliminate body

I Actually Laughed Out Loud This Morning - 08/26/10 09:40 AM
Anyone who knows me knows I'm not a morning person, but when my clock radio went off this morning and I heard: "Students across Ontario will be facing tougher penalties for missing deadlines when they return to school in two weeks. The Ontario Ministry of Education is allowing teachers to hand out zeros to students who don't submit assignments on time." I actually laughed out loud, causing my dog Joker to jump on the bed to see if I was okay. And then they went on to say that this didn't mean that teachers will give zeros all the time. Well,

Security Matters - 08/25/10 05:51 PM
I live in a high-rise condominium apartment building. We have a security entrance and this entrance is set up in such a way that residents have fobs to get in and visitors are to call whoever they are visiting on the intercom so they can be buzzed in. Contractors and such are to call the building manager or her assistant. Today, I had a bit of an altercation with a contractor who wanted me to let him in. As I was closing the door behind me, he grabbed it. I didn't know him; I hadn't seen him before, so I told

Fun Facts About Our Furry Friends, the Dog - 08/23/10 12:10 PM
Did You Know... Dogs were first domesticated as wolves some 17,000 years ago. A dry nose does not necessarily mean a sick puppy - a wet nose helps keep a dog cool and helps him smell. When a dog sneezes he might be getting rid of something in his nose, or he could be happy or excited. Dogs can get sunburned, especially those with light noses and light short hair. When a dog eats grass, it's not necessarily because he's sick - he might just like the taste. Extremely submissive dogs (dogs with self-esteem problems) will urinate to show they

Deep Fried Butter Anyone? - 08/20/10 05:12 PM
Yep, you heard me right. One of the items on the Toronto CNE's menu this year is deep fried butter. Apparently, this little heart attack waiting to happen is battered covered butter, deep fried. Some say it tastes like a donut; others say it's like a bagel but sweeter. It's about the size of a small meatball. Other delectable items that the 100 vendors should be charging a health tax for include 22 items on a stick. I don't know, folks. If I were running an event that included rides that swung people up, held them high in the air and

I'm Scratching As I Write This - 08/19/10 09:21 AM
The other night I was watching the news when they reported that Bed Bug infestations were on the rise. Now, I'm not normally a squeamish person, but EWWWWW. Bed Bugs were fairly common in the U.S. before World War II, but in the 40s and 50s became rare due to the use of the DDT pesticide. So why are they making a comeback now? There are several reasons: People travel more from one place to another, moving the Bed Bugs with them. An increase in immigration from developing worlds. The ban on the use of stronger pesticides. Bed Bugs are often blamed on

Mill Park Drive is Still Closed - 08/18/10 12:36 PM
Those who have travelled along Homer Watson with the hopes of turning left onto Huron Road in order to get to Mill Park Drive, or have turned left onto Pioneer Drive with the hopes of getting onto Mill Park Drive from Green Valley, have been disappointed for the last month. Mill Park Drive is closed due to a sanitary force main installation. Although their road closed sign says it will be re-opened on August 31, recent information on the Kitchener.ca site says otherwise. The tentative date is now September 12, 2010. Because I live in this area, I've seen a lot of impatient drivers try to

Back to School....Back to School... - 08/17/10 01:52 PM
The kiddies will be back to school in three weeks. When my girls were still in school, this would be when the count down would begin. Every chance I got I would start randomly singing: "Back to school. Three weeks and you'll have to go...back to school." And of course I'd get the sneer and the growl and told I was mean. But realistically, I think they wanted to go back. They missed their friends, because during the summer everyone seemed to have their own things to do; their friend's parents had their own schedules to keep and often that meant having to go to their babysitters

Friday the 13th - Scarier Than Ever! - 08/13/10 09:24 AM
Every Friday the 13th, motorcyclists from all over meet in Port Dover, Ontario. This started in November 1981 when Chris Simons missed his motorcycle friends and decided to call them all up and meet at the bar. This quickly turned into a huge party every Friday the 13th. Today is the first and only Friday the 13th for 2010 and the first one in the summer for over two years and OVER 100,000 PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED. Pretty incredible. Watch the video below to hear about how it got started straight from the horses motorcyclists mouth:

No Imagination Required. - 08/12/10 02:55 PM
When I was a kid I used to play with Barbies. No big surprise there; kids still play with Barbies today. And I used to pretend my Barbie lived in a house and drove a car and even got married. Again, no surprise there; I bet there are many kids doing that right now. But, when I pretended, I actually pretended... My Barbie's house was my dad's La-z-y Boy Recliner. I pushed it away from the corner, reclined it and used its hollow back. My Barbie's car was an empty tissue box, and her wedding dress? Yep. You guessed it. Barbie got married in a

Are Newsletters Old School? - 08/10/10 10:03 AM
Ten years ago when I owned and operated A-ha! Writing Services, newsletters were very popular. Many of my clients required that I create, write, and edit their monthly newsletters. I had a client in Alberta who had contracted my services three years in a row for his twice-monthly e-zine. He even went as far as to hire ghost-writers to work with me. And then newsletters just didn't seem so important anymore. The public seemed to lose interest. The number of people who wanted to receive newsletters in hard copy or e-mail format started to decrease. Some were even offended, saying the newsletter was SPAM or a

So. You Want To Be a Real Estate Sales Representative... - 08/09/10 11:58 AM
So, you want to work in Real Estate in Ontario. You've taken stock of your personal attributes - you're happy, eager to please, and you like people (that line's used a lot and most of the experienced professionals will laugh at you when you say it). You've also checked out the courses you'll need, budgeted for their costs, and have even checked your closet's inventory for clothes that will do until you can make some money. Well, good for you! But, have you ever been self-employed before? Even though you will need to join a brokerage after you have completed the first three

Biking And Bus Transit Join Forces In The City Of Brampton, Ontario, Canada - 08/09/10 10:46 AM
Bike racks on buses to encourage bike riding and an alternative for when you just can't ride your bike anymore was an ingenious idea. The Grand River Transit here in Kitchener-Waterloo has been doing it for a while now. Al & Peggy have written these great tips to, as they say, "make your ride a smooth one". As a courtesy, comments have been disabled here. Leave any comments you might have with Al & Peggy, please. Dog Parks - Really? - 08/07/10 12:30 PM
Dog parks. Let's take a whole bunch of dogs, different sizes, different breeds, different backgrounds, different personalities with different owners and all from different living environments and let them run loose in a small area and expect that nothing "bad" will happen. Really? I'm going to be extremely blunt here, so if you don't like bluntness, you should probably leave now. What moron came up with this concept and unless you are Cesar Millan (or an equivalent dog whisperer) what makes you think you are expert enough to know what your dog's body language is saying, never mind what a strange dog

Safety in Your Cell Phone - 08/06/10 01:41 PM
As a REALTOR® having a cell phone is a necessary tool for when clients, the office, and potential customers need to get in touch with me. But I don't work all the time... I don't have a landline (home phone), so my cell phone is also a way for my family to get in touch with me. But that's not all. My cell phone is also my safety net and helps to keep others safe too... On The Road. There have been a few times that my car's dashboard light has come on. Instead of panicking I simply pulled over, called the dealership's mechanic, described the light and
