In an effort to restart the economy by giving the housing market a boost, those who buy a home any time this year (you must close this year) will receive a $8,000 tax credit. 
A tax credit is not a write off, or a deduction, it is a rebate, or a 100% check.

stimulus plan: How to get your rebate check for the stimulus plan - 02/09/08 08:05 AM
After you file a 1040 or 1040 EZ for 2007, your rebate check will be on its way.  If you are not normally required to file a return, you need to file one to obtain the rebate.
You will receive your check in May if you file your 07 return by April 15.  If you file late, you will receive the check later in the year. 
You will receive $600 per person plus $300 per child if you are below the AGI threshold.
