portland: Designing a Home Office That Works For You! - 01/18/10 04:21 PM
I wrote this article for my newsletter last week. I got to thinking that almost all of the Home Stagers I know work out of home offices. Real Estate Brokers usually have home offices as well. So, I thought I would go ahead and share this. I hope you enjoy the article and can create the perfect home office for you.
It all started last year when I finally bought a laptop computer with my Christmas money. I was so excited because I could finally do some work while I sat in the shade on our deck overlooking the river. But … (15 comments)

portland: Why Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Fail to Thrive - 01/27/09 09:48 AM
As a person interested in a sustainable world, I am looking to do my part in as many ways as possible. As an Interior Designer here in Portland, Oregon where we are deeply concerned with being eco-friendly, I have the opportunity and the responsibility of influencing others more than the average person because I help my clients to choose materials, finishes and products that can be (or not be) "green", efficient, or sustainable. I also provide home staging services so I have an entire warehouse of furniture, accessories and lamps, which again, can be green or not. The one area in … (4 comments)

portland: "Bonus Room" is Sort of Like "Tuna Surprise" ... Until Home Staging Makes the Difference! - 01/24/09 04:55 PM
Have you ever walked into a listing that had a room touted as a "Bonus Room" and been mystified as to what kind of bonus this is exactly? It has always struck me as a vague term used to describe a room that defies description.Sort of like the "Tuna Surprise" my mom used to make when she was clearing out the refrigerator. Nobody knew exactly what it was!?
Many houses have had basements, attics & former garages finished to create extra square footage. Often these have awkward shapes or low angled ceilings and have no discernable purpose. Would you rather have … (23 comments)

portland: Redesign in Progress ... Not Your Usual Before & After Photos - 01/19/09 02:37 PM
One of the things I love about my home staging work is that it has brought me some very fun redesign (sometimes called staged to live) and interior design projects. If there's anything a good stager knows how to do, it's to edit and arrange a client's belongings as well as how to define spaces.
A few months ago, I had a client call me and ask if I could just give her a few hours of time. She had just moved into a studio loft in The Wyatt in Portland's Pearl District and just wasn't sure what belongings she … (5 comments)

portland: If I Don't Know What Room This Is, Neither Will a Buyer ... Embarrassing But True Story in the Life of a Stager! - 01/08/09 04:42 PM
I went to meet a broker who was one of my regular clients at a small, vacant, 1 bedroom condo he was putting on the market. We went from the front door, through the hall and into an itty-bitty kitchen, teeny dining area, through the living room which had some type of side den with glass french doors opening to the living room and hall. I looked around a little puzzled and said, "so, where's the bedroom?"  Well, to my undying embarrassment, he laughed and said "you're standing in it!"
TRUE STORY! I know you must be thinking I'm an idiot, … (15 comments)

portland: A Few Fav Table Settings - Contemporary & Serene Staging Bling - 01/06/09 07:10 AM
Just sharing a few of my favorite table settings and table-scapes used in staging and model homes. I love interesting elements that work with the feel of the property such as the branch candle holders with bird napkin rings used in a vacation home near Hood River overlooking the Columbia River and forest. Also enjoy unusual contemporary objects like the porcelain crinkle cups against orange CB2 plates and spun vinyl Chilewich placemats for a contemporary loft in Portland's funky Hawthorne district. For a penthouse loft in the city I used very minimal white plates, a textured glass plate and tiny triangular … (4 comments)

portland: Inexpensive Art Solution for 2-Story Loft - 01/04/09 03:40 PM
When staging this model home for the H45 Lofts, I needed an inexpensive way to create art for it's 23 foot ceiling height. I found this great fabric by Marimekko and made a 14 foot tall panel with rods sewn into the top and bottom to make it hang straight. It gave a much needed blast of color against the gray concrete walls. Of course we needed a very long ladder. I confess to letting my assistant climb up there to hang it ... too scary for me! But it looked great and cost less than $400. You can see more … (5 comments)
