What Ever Happened to Randolph Scott? - 03/29/08 11:17 AM
"What ever Happened to Randolph Scott?  Is the name and line in a very popular Statler Brothers song?  The song is actually reminising about the old days when you went to town to see a Saturday Western that likely stared the likes of Randolph Scott or John Wayne.  What ever did happend to the famous cowboy who grew up in Charlotte NC?

Todays's Plumbing projects are more User Friendly - 03/29/08 09:30 AM
Ask anyone if they have ever taken on a home plumbing project by themselves and they will likely say that they have. But how involved was the project? Many building professionals agree that plumbing is one of those tasks that typically looks a lot easier than it is. And while many savvy homeowners may have taken on a simple plumbing project, such as repairing a leaky faucet, fixing a toilet that keeps running, or even hooking up an ice maker, few consumers have actually plumbed their own bathroom or replaced old, corroded pipe. That's because plumbing has historically required various mechanical … (0 comments)

Everything You Ever Wanted to know about Stucco - 03/22/08 10:01 AM
EIFS is not ‘stucco‘ in the sense of the word stucco. Traditional stucco is often called Portland Cement Plaster, and is a centuries-old non-insulating material. Stucco consists of sand, Portland Cement, and water, and is a hard, dense, thick, non-insulating material. EIFS is a modern, lightweight synthetic wall cladding that includes foam plastic insulation and thin synthetic coatings. There are also specialty stuccos that use synthetic materials but no insulation, and these are also not EIFS either. A common example is what is called one-coat stucco, which is a thick, synethic stucco applied in a single layer (traditional stucco is applied … (4 comments)

Difference between Termite Damage and Moisture Damage - 03/19/08 06:09 PM
There are many ways the wood on your house can get damaged. If you have damage, Do you know whether its moisture damage, carpenter ant damage, or worst of all, termite damage. Moisture damage leaves a cubicle rot or alligatoring look to it. Carpenter ant damage leaves the wood with a stringy appearance. Carpenter ants only damage wood that already has a high moisture content. Ants of any kind can leave grainy dirt residue (unlike temites who don't waste anything) Termites shell out the Spring wood. When they finish it looks like pages of a book. The do not leave any … (4 comments)

How to Kill a Home Inspector Without Getting Caught (Calling All Realtors) - 03/19/08 03:21 PM
"We shoot every third home inspector and the second one just left" was what I heard as I entered a Charlotte Real Estate office getting ready to give a presentation PowerPoint in hand.  Tough crowd.   Now I have been doing home inspections for awhile and I am aware of some of the reasons some real estate agents would like to kill a few inspectors.  We have many many 500K houses or more here in Charlotte NC.  A three percent commission on that would be 15K.  It would be 30K if you were on both sides of the deal.  Now if a … (3 comments)

It's one of the main points of staging a home, and while many people choose to hide their stuff for the sale and then drag it to the next house, this only adds more work with very little pay off. We went to the annual "Y Guides" (formerly Indian Princesses) Daddy Daughter Dance. This is like a prom for young girls and their dad's. Dad's are still cool when they're seven. The "Y" guides are like scouts for boys. If you have a son you can bond with them through scouts or sports. It's a little tougher with girls but the Y guides does a great job. … (10 comments)

What is Polybutylene - 03/16/08 07:40 PM
Polybutylene is a form of plastic resin that was used extensively in the manufacture of water supply piping from 1978 until 1995. Due to the low cost of the material and ease of installation, polybutylene piping systems were viewed as "the pipe of the future" and were used as a substitute for traditional copper piping. It is most commonly found in the "Sun Belt" where residential construction was heavy through the 1980's and early-to-mid 90's, but it is also very common in the Mid Atlantic and Northwest Pacific states. These are typically gray or white in color with a dull finish. … (3 comments)

Live Termites - 03/16/08 07:14 PM
Usually when we find termites on a slab house, it is on one of the perimeter walls. You see termites come fom the ground and the have to return to the ground for moisture. On a slab house the perimer wall baseboard is sitting right on top of an expansion crack that goes right to the ground. The perimeter wall baseboard is usually the first thing to go. Termites can not go through concrete however they can go through a crack in the concrete or adjacent to water piping as long as there is at least 1/64 of an inch. In … (3 comments)

Damaged floor under bathroom - 03/12/08 10:48 AM
Do you have some soft spots in your bathroom floor? Bathroom floors are real hot spots for moisture damage. There are so many places where leaks and damage can occur. The most common are around the toilet and the tub. If you see moisture or damage around the toilet (from crawl) this is usually the sign of a bad wax seal. The seal seals the toilet to the floor. Sometimes the toilet gets loose and starts to rock. This will compromise the wax seal. Then everytime you flush moisture will wick into the subfloor adjacent to the pipe. Bathtubs can also … (5 comments)

This is considererd condusive conditions for termites and for fungus. There are multiple causes and multiple fixes for high moisture in the crawl. Some are simple and some are complex. The fixes are sometimes inexpensive to very costly. Every house is different. Termite Damage to the Front Band Sill - 03/12/08 04:33 AM
Do you know where the No # 1 spot for termites is in your house? Over eighty percent of the time we find termite damage it is in the band sill or the outermost joist adjacent to the front stoop or porch. Why is this? Its because these stoops are “dirt filled” and they also become a little bit of a trash bin during construction for spare wood pieces, food trash bags, etc. This trash or cellelose material is like prime rib for termites who are already there because it is dirt filled and that’s where the termite come from. Well … (3 comments)

Trim Damage - 03/10/08 06:46 PM
Do you have trim damage? Do you have soft wood around windows and doors? What happens here is water gets in behind the wood where it's not primed or painted, then the pourous wood will suck it up and it will cause damage. Moisture in wood is also attractive for termites. After the moisture has been there awhile the wood rots and sometimes carpentar ants will also settle in and shell out some of the wood for their nest. How does the water get in? It usually comes in at joints in the trim and joints between the trim and the … (0 comments)

Screens in Attics - 03/10/08 06:05 PM
Have you ever had bats, squirrels, or other rodents in your attic? This is probably the result of not having screens or not having adequate screen coverage. Often flood lights attract bugs which attract bats. If these bats get in your attic they poop. The poop can carry disease and parasites. You have to get the bats, birds, squirrels, or any other critters out of the attic and then put screens to exclude them from coming back in. In some cases (especially with bats) you may actually have to put the screens on the outside. (to keep them from hanging on … (1 comments)

Leaky Flues - 03/10/08 05:45 PM
Have you ever had a leak in your attic despite having fairly new shingles? Leaks will develop around flues and flashing much sooner than they will on the shingles themselves. It is necessary to have flashing at flue vents and plumbing vents. The flashing is necessary to make the transition from round pipe to shingled roof. Basically the flashing wraps itself around the pipe and then weaves itself into the shingles. If there is a leak it usually occurs where the flashing wraps around the pipe. In this video Preston Sandlin of Home Inspection Carolina in Charlotte NC shows two flues … (1 comments)
