things to do: St Paddy Day Parade in Downtown Jackson - 2009 - 03/20/09 03:43 PM
Don't miss the festivities tonight and tomorrow as the Mal's St. Paddy's Day Parade is scheduled for this weekend! Yes, I know it's after St. Patrick's Day, but the parade is tomorrow (March 21, 2009) anyway.
Tonight at Hal and Mal's, The Sweet Potato Queens Ball will take place from 7-11 p.m. This is an event you won't want to miss. Bring your sunglasses and wear your best bling and you'll fit right in. Tomorrow, the lovely ladies will be marching in the St. Paddy's Day Parade beginning at noon. Proceeds of the Queens March will benefit Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.

things to do: Go Fly a Kite...at Lakeshore Park, Brandon - 03/08/09 10:21 PM
The onset of Daylight Savings Time gave our family an extra hour to spend outdoors Sunday, and we spent the time at Lakeshore Park in Brandon, off Spillway Road.
It was a great March afternoon, perfect for flying a kite, grilling burgers and hot dogs, playing on the swings, or tossing a frisbee.

It wasn't crowded, but over 300 people enjoyed the spring-like weather at the park Sunday afternoon.

Besides Lakeshore Park, there are several parks and trails located along the Ross Barnett Reservoir for hiking, boating, tennis, and soccer. Throughout Ridgeland, Madison, Flowood and … (6 comments)

things to do: 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Parade at Patrick Farms Subdivision - 02/22/09 02:32 PM
Mardi Gras season is underway! The 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Parade was held Saturday at Patrick Farms Subdivision in Pearl, MS.

Grand Marshall for the parade was Scott Simmons, local TV news anchor for WAPT-TV in Jackson, MS.

You may notice the "floats" are unique. The Patrick Farms parade was conceived by friends and residents Melissa Randall and Jacki Barton three years ago as they longed to attend a Mardi Gras parade. The course of their conversation led them to start their own tradition in their neighborhood.

The weather co-operated and 10 "floats", i.e., golf carts, participated in … (5 comments)

things to do: Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club - Multiple Locations in Metro Jackson, MS - 02/18/09 04:51 PM
Looking for a gym to fulfill your New Year's Resolution, or perhaps you've just moved to the area and are looking for a place to work out? Try one of the numerous locations of Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club. With locations in Jackson, Byram, Flowood, and Madison, you are sure to find a location near you.

Personally, I've been interested in joining a yoga class for quite some time. Today I toured the Lakeland Courthouse because I heard their facility had a yoga program. Depending on your schedule, they have classes Monday-Wednesday evenings, Thursday mornings, three sessions on Saturday, and one … (4 comments)

things to do: Flowood, MS: Market Street Set to Open Soon - 01/26/09 04:42 PM
Flowood, MS is growing, a fact easily recognized by driving along the retail district on Lakeland Drive (Highway 25 North).
The final quadrant of Flowood's shopping mecca, Market Street, is slated to open in March of this year. Store anchors will include J.C. Penney's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and Michaels. Numerous smaller stores will fill the remainder of the facility.

Market Street will have more than 300,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

Cheddar's Restaurant opened recently at the intersection of Old Fannin Road and Lakeland Drive. Food there is highly recommended and the portion size is generous.

things to do: Parker House Restaurant in Olde Towne Ridgeland - 11/19/08 06:54 PM

Today I was treated to a superb lunch at the Parker House Restaurant in Olde Towne Ridgeland. The Parker House has an interesting history that you can read about on their website, but suffice it to say that it is fine dining in a old English style residence-turned-restaurant in the heart of Olde Towne.

The food was exquisitely prepared and served in a timely fashion. Our meal began with a serving of fried green tomatoes, some of the best I've ever had. It was difficult deciding what to order--everything looked so GOOD! Although I strongly considered the shrimp and grits, ultimately I selected the … (5 comments)

things to do: Let's go Walking, Mississippi! - 10/21/08 01:42 PM
Regardless of where you live, you've likely heard the benefits of walking. Many people walk to lose weight, but there are many advantages to walking; it lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, improves your stamina, and elevates your mood. That's a good reason in and of itself. But for each hour spent walking, you add two hours to your life. Now that is an incentive!

The Let's Go Walkin' Mississippi campaign is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, and First Lady Marsha Barbour, wife of Gov. Haley Barbour, is the spokeswoman. Most Mississippians have seen the public service announcements encouraging walking to get … (0 comments)

things to do: A Day in Historic Fondren - 10/19/08 09:38 PM

Yesterday was a beautiful, crisp fall day in the Jackson Metro area, a perfect day for visiting the historic Fondren district.

We loaded up the "little girls" and took them to the downtown area so they could play and the "big girls" could shop.

St. Luke's Fundraiser was for the benefit of both St. Luke's Church and the Methodist Children Home.

There is a lot to see and do in the Fondren area. Good food, including Walker's Drive Inn, Rooster's Restaurant, Basil's, quaint shops, multiple area churches, and a community grocery store to name a few. Take … (1 comments)

Picture this: It's Saturday, October 18, 2008. The weather should be crisp and mild, with no rain in sight. What can we do? How should we spend the day? How about taking a stroll at A Day On Duling in the historic Fondren District?
The community event will benefit both St. Luke's UMC and the Methodist Children's Home. Duling Avenue runs east-west between Old Canton Road and Highway 51.

things to do: Flowood MS Kid's Night Out - 10/05/08 09:06 AM

The City of Flowood, MS is offering it's alternative to Halloween on Thursday, October 30 at Winner's Circle Park. The park is adjacent to Flynt Memorial Library on Old Fannin Road.
The city is encouraging residents to move their Halloween festivities (Trick or Treating) to Thursday night instead of the traditional date to avoid conflict with area football games.
Area churches, schools, and business are invited to participate. This annual event, sponsored by the City, is FREE and always a hit with the kids. Bring your children between 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

things to do: Char Restaurant...Where Everyone Knows Your Name, Almost - 10/01/08 04:50 PM

So, you want to gather with friends after work or dine out after an especially challenging day? One of my favorite places to go in the Jackson Metro area is Char, which is located off I-55 at Northside Drive in Highland Village.

Char is well-known for their mouthwatering steaks and seafood. While the food at Char is scrumptious, my favorite spot is in the Piano Bar, where patrons can listen to smooth jazz by talented musicians. The décor is rich wood, high top tables, and a beautiful Steinway baby grand. The atmosphere is cozy, relaxing, and the service is … (6 comments)

things to do: Take a stroll on the wild side - The Jackson Zoo - 09/29/08 04:33 PM
If you are looking for something fun and educational to do with your family, why not take an afternoon and spend it at the neighborhood zoo? This weekend my best friend and I loaded up the grandkids, four girls under the age of nine, and headed for the Jackson Zoo. The weather was nearly perfect, a little on the warm side for late September. Fortunately there were enough trees to offer some welcome shade along the way.

We saw the usual lions, tigers, and bears (oh, my!) along with … (0 comments)
