South East - March gardening tips

March is a good time to drum to a different beat. As you plan your garden this year, think about doing something different. Beauty can be had in the most unusual ways. With the arrival of spring, we want to see beautiful gardens.

Clematis. If you have always wanted to plant a clematis at your mailbox, now is a good time to plant one, but only if you have a sunny location that does not receive the hot afternoon sun. Clematis needs good soil and good drainage. Mulch around the plant to keeps the roots cool.

Container garden. A container garden is simply a smaller version of a garden bed. Strut your gardening stuff with container gardens; go beyond a single annual for a color accent. Try planting your container garden with veggies, ornamentals, herbs, foliage or succulents.

Fruit trees. Blueberries can be fertilized lightly, but too much fertilizer may reduce the fruit crop. The same fertilizer for azaleas can be used on blueberries.

Be sure there is clean, fresh mulch around fruit trees and bushes. Keep the mulch away from the trunks to prevent insect, vole and mouse damage. Mulch keeps weeds under control, conserves moisture, moderates soil temperature and may protect ripe fruit that falls to the ground.

Fig trees. Damaged wood needs to be removed, even if it means severely cutting the plant. For the best fruit production, figs need to be limed and fertilized.
It takes 1/2 pound of 15-5-5 fertilizer (the numbers stand for the amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) for every 3 feet of tree height. For example, a 6-foot-tall fig tree would need about a pound of fertilizer. Spread the fertilizer around the drip line of the plant and just beyond. After you water in the fertilizer, mulch the area around the tree.

Cut back roses. Keep climbing roses to a reasonable size by cutting back one cane to the ground and allowing a new cane to form. If you do this for three or four years, you will have a bush that produces blooms over a broader area, with canes of different heights from the ground up. The younger, shorter branches (canes) will produce more blooms than the older, longer woody ones. For miniature roses, cut out all dead growth, remove any crowded or diseased canes, and cut back the remaining canes to produce a rounded form. For hybrid teas and floribundas, cut back canes to force new growth. Remove damaged canes. After you cut the roses back, refresh the mulch by replacing the old with new. When you are finished cutting plants back and replacing the mulch, it is recommended to treat rosebushes with a lime-sulfur spray to combat overwintering insects and disease problems.

Treat for pests. Leaf miners will make their appearance this month. They appear as a swarms of small flying insects hovering around hollies and other evergreen shrubs and trees, then they lay eggs on the leaves. When the larvae hatch, they bore or “mine” into the leaf to form the tunnels. To lessen the problem, you can spray infested plants with a dormant oil to smother eggs.

My absolute nemesis is the vole; it drives me (and others) mad. Voles become active again in March. To help lessen their destruction, keep mulch away from the trunks of shrubs and trees. If you see in what looks like a mouse hole in your flower bed, especially where you grow lilies and other bulbs, it’s likely a vole hole. Stop the madness. Try this: Bait a mousetrap with apple and peanut butter, and set it next to the hole.

Tend to fruit trees. Blueberries can be fertilized lightly, but too much fertilizer may reduce the fruit crop. The same fertilizer for azaleas can be used on blueberries.

Be sure there is clean, fresh mulch around fruit trees and bushes. Keep the mulch away from the trunks to prevent insect, vole and mouse damage. Mulch keeps weeds under control, conserves moisture, moderates soil temperature and may protect ripe fruit that falls to the ground.

Winter Hiking in East Tennessee

Just one of the many reasons I love Tennessee. I could not imagine life with out seeing the beautiful mountains everyday. Tennessee provides so many outdoor activities that you can do one everyday for a year and still not put a dent in the list. I love Tennessee!

Why do people like to hike during the winter. Well here in East Tennessee for many it is the best time of the year to hike. Having the Great Smoky Mountains National Park close by is a great benefit for theGreater Knoxville area.

With approximately 800 miles of hiking trails the park has much to see. The problem is that this park is the most visited national park in the country, so even with that many miles of trails it can get hard to find a trail to enjoy on your own, especially those trails close to roads. During the winter months this usually isn't a problem. while there are many people out to visit the park there are fewer brave souls who actually venture out of their cars or off the pavement.

During the winter months with the foliage off of the trees the views are spectacular. If you are adventurous and don't mind hiking in snow, or even ice, you can get some spectacular photo opportunities. Hiking along the Appalachian Trail gets you to the peak of the mountain and can offer outstanding views but the hike to the top isn't for everyone.

If you are planning on doing some winter hiking be prepared. The temperature can change quickly and there can be a difference of ten degrees or more from the foothills to the peak. Boots are a must, just this last weekend I hiked from Newfound Gap north on the Appalachian Trial and saw most of the hikers wearing only tennis shoes. With the snow and ice on the trail I am sure they were miserable and it made for a very dangerous trip. Prepare for the change in temperatures. One of the biggest mistakes is to wear cotton clothing. Cotton looses it's insulating effectiveness when it gets wet. Water resistant pants are not that expensive and wearing a fleece jacket is one of the best ways to stay warm. Don't forget gloves and a hat with ear protection. One of the most critical items is to have water. Even though we aren't sweating we can still get dehydrated quickly and drinking from the streams can leave you sick for days.

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!

"St. Valentine was a priest near Rome in about the year 270 A.D, a time when the church was enduring great persecution. His ministry was to help the Christians to escape this persecution, and to provide them the sacraments, such as marriage, which was outlawed by the Roman Empire at that time."

Contemporary records of Saint Valentine were most probably destroyed during the Diocletianic Persecution on early 4th century. In the 5th or 6th century, a work called Passio Marii et Marthae published an invented story of martyrdom for Saint Valentine of Rome, probably by borrowing tortures that happened to other saints, as it was usually made in the literature of that period.

It states that St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing Julia, the blind daughter of his jailer Asterius. The jailer's daughter and his forty-four member household (family members and servants) came to believe in Jesus and were baptized. In addition to this, Saint Valentine is said to have performed clandestine Christian weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. The Roman Emperor Claudius II supposedly forbade this in order to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. According to legend, in order to "remind them of God's love and to encourage them to remain faithful Christians," Saint Valentine is said to have cut hearts from parchment, giving them to the soldiers and persecuted Christians, a possible origin of the widespread use of hearts on Saint Valentine's Day
