Why Are Grandchildren So Funny? - 11/28/11 07:21 PM
Why are Grandchildren so Much Funnier than their parents? "Tell Grammie to turn on the water and give it a try Granpa."  I am working at my computer in my office when the confident order from my 4 year old grandson is pronounced.  I start to rise from my chair when it dawns on me that Sam may not have the authority to blurt out such a bold command.   The plumber is working to unplug a clogged drain from a clean out in the basement.  I look at Sam seriously and ask, "Did the Plumber man say to turn on … (1 comments)

Senninger Plumbers Pass the Test Again - 11/28/11 06:43 PM
Senninger Plumbing Pulls Through Again May battle with the kitchen drain was finally put on hold Saturday night.  I gave up!!!  I am not a plumber but when it is a holiday weekend and the costs are high I will give anything a try.  But after breaking a snake and nearly breaking my back I just called it quits and we got by until today. Shane from Senninger was here two hours battling the shredded dish cloth that miraculously got at least 30 feet into a labyrinth of pipe.  It managed to get soaked with grease, black, smelly sticky stuff and … (0 comments)

Once a DAWG, always a DAWG, Cats are Catching on Though - 11/27/11 10:31 PM
Once a DAWG always a DAWG but Learning to Appreciate the Cats I grew up watching and rooting for the University of Washington football.  I got hooked on the Huskies when I was ten years old and the mauled the Wisconsin badgers in the Rose Bowl.  Wisconsin was rated number won and we beat them 44-8.  I later attended the University of Washington and received my Bachelors and Master degrees from there.  Living in Lexington has given me the opportunity to follow excellent basketball.  I will always be a husky first but will root for the CATS when my DAWGS are … (0 comments)

Negotiating, No Beard, No Flannel, and Many Years of Snuggling - 11/25/11 08:54 PM
Negotiating 101, No Beard, No Flannel Nightgowns - And 40 Years of Snuggling Sometimes negotiating gets a little rough and even nasty.  I have had the good fortune this year of having mostly very easy transactions to negotiate.  In most cases even if there were some serious disagreements we have had a kind spirit present as we worked together to see that both the buyer and the seller won. My precious wife Kathy is playing her baby grand upstairs and I am working in my office downstairs.  It is such a delight to listen as she plays "Dance of the Sugar … (3 comments)

A Fine, Fine Meal with Loved Ones and Friends in Lexington Kentucky - 11/24/11 10:04 PM
A Good Time, A Great Meal and A Grand Dessert

We just returned from my son's house where we were gathered with family and friends for a wonderful meal.
The cranberries and green beans are always my favorite but that sweet potato casserole that my daughter in law Hannah makes is so good.
I grew up despising sweet potatoes.  I only remember them ever being candied.  Candied sweet potatoes to me are just disgustingly sweet.
Hannah's baked sweet potatoes with bacon and spicey seasoning is fits the pallette perfectly.

The weather here in Lexington was so warm today … (0 comments)

Murphy's Law of Plumbing Problems - 11/23/11 10:29 PM
Murphy's Law Strikes Again! Drains in your home will clog just before a major holiday or other celebration.  If it is  a holiday in which you do lots of cooking then the kitchen drain is sure to clog.  If it is a celebration for a child's birthday when you have 20 toddlers that need to use the potty then it will one or all of the bathrooms. We can testify to this truth.  We were completing our babysitting assignment for the evening -- four year old Sam was downstairs passing the Nerf football to me as I was watching the Cats maul … (4 comments)

With interest rates hovering around four percent, prices in many communities as low as they have been since 2003 this is THE TIME TO BUY!  Buying  home in Central Kentucky right now is a great option.  I helped a buyer get agreement today on a home that is only … (0 comments)

Cellphone Civility - My Promise to Client, Friends, and Family of Lexington - 11/21/11 05:56 PM
Cell Phone Civility -  My Promise to Clients, Family and the Lexington Community

This past week I think I saw no fewer than four rear end accidents.  Two of them had injuries with  major damage to the autos.  I also read about some terrible rear end accidents around  the nation.  I know there are times when I have been on the phone while driving in which I was fortunate to avoid an accident.  Therefore I am making a pledge to my clients, family and the Lexington community as a whole to not answer my phone or make calls while driving.

Reviewing Two Seed Catalogs - I like both but they are very different. - 11/19/11 02:57 PM
Continued Review of Seed Catalogs A few weeks ago I reviewed Thompson Morgan's Seed Catalog.   Today I want to compare and contrast two seed catalogs,  R-H Shumway's HPS and FEDCO. HPS is geared toward professional growers so to get the really good prices you need to buy large quantities.  If you have ever had a hard time handling very small seeds then you may really like HPS.  They carry a large selection of seeds that have been pelletted.  That is,  the seeds have been covered in organic material that makes them much larger and therefore much easier to handle.  This … (0 comments)

Land and Lot Sales Continue to Lag in Central Kentucky.   Some Serious Suggestions for S!ellers
The Rector Hayden Report of Farm and Land sales for October of 2011 continued to a dip in sales.  Only 16 properties sold in October or 2011 and of those 16 only one property sold for $400,00 or more.  There is so much inventory on the marked for farms and land that it takes statistically an average of 56 months to sell any property.   There are currently enough properties in the 550,000 to 599,999 range that it will take 300 months to sell all … (0 comments)

Shannon's Shade, An Exceptional Family Business in Lexington KEntucky - 11/12/11 05:46 PM
Service Exceptional at Shannon's Shade Service  in Lexington A few months ago I needed a glass shade for a bulb.  I searched on line and could not find what I needed, stopped by Lowes, and tried the largest  electrical supplier in Lexington.  I finally was directed to Shannon's Shade Service at 1210 North Limestone.  I walked into the store and was greeted by a very nice woman who looked up the shade in a very old book and said she would order it for me but it may take a while.  A couple of weeks later she called and said she had … (0 comments)

Horse Sales at Keeneland in Lexington are Worth Millions The November horse sales at Keeneland are something everyone should experience.  Knowing that most of you cannot attend I have included some links to help you get a virtual taste of this world class event.  It is no exaggeration to call it "world class."  There is probably not another place in the world, outside of Wall Street, to see so much money change hands so quickly with people from all around the world. This first link is to a live auction.  I am not sure if they repeat these during the hours … (1 comments)

My Brother Ray, An American Heroe, Thank You Ray for Serving our Country - 11/10/11 09:44 PM
A tribute to my brother Ray, a Viet Nam Veteran who gave two years and more to his country. My brother went to his eternal reward over five years ago.  Ray was generous to a fault, aggressive beyond description when it came to anything physical, a wonderful grandfather and a great husband. When Ray and I were growing up on the family farm in Idaho we worked together, played together and had occasional physical battles.  It did not take me long to learn trying to defeat Ray was a futile endeavor.  I learned to be a diplomate very quickly.  Ray respected … (6 comments)

A Hardware Store Worth the Drive to Lexington About a year ago I discovered Chevy Chase Hardware in Lexington.  I had driven by it numerous times and assumed it was like an Ace, a friendly place but not really stocked in such a way it would be worthwhile to stop.  I   WAS WRONG!!! Chevy Chase Hardware, owned by Bill Edwards for 36 years and at this location for the past 12 is unique because it stocks almost everything you could ever need or want in the way of hardware.   I can usually find what I need at … (0 comments)

Four More Reasons to Live in Lexington Kentucky - 11/09/11 05:43 PM
Four More Reasons Why You Should Buy a Home in Lexington Ky Earlier I wrote about "Four Reasons" to buy a home in Lexington.  Today I want to give four more reasons. 1)  According to Women's Health Lexington was rated the ninth "Best Affordable Place to Retire."  Lexington was noted as having "low property taxes and cost of living.  Personally my wife and I have noticed that this area seems to value senior citizens more than the Pacific Northwest.  Kroger's is by far the largest food chain in the nation and gives everyone that is 60 or older a ten percent … (0 comments)

Fall Beauty in Gainesway Subdivision, Lexington Ky - 11/08/11 06:34 PM
Visit or stay a lifetime, but come to Lexington for the fall beauty. Central Kentucky may not have the famous Smokey Mountain color or the colors of New Hampshire but  it is pretty spectacular nevertheless. The older neighborhoods have the best color.  The newer neighborhoods have not had enough time for the trees to get to the majestic beauty stage.  I took these photos driving up Claiborne Way.  Those really tall trees are Pin Oaks.  Those two pin oaks are the lifeblood  of my  little spot of land.  The provide nourishment for the garden, spectacular beauty during the fall months and … (4 comments)

Last minute tips for spring garden beauty, there is still time to plant bulbs. Photo from Dreamstime.
I know that often the times slips away and we just don't get things done in a timely mannner.  Planting bulbs in the fall is an awesome way to cause your home to really catch the eye of the neighborhood.  This is sometimes the best time to find the bulbs on sale.  If you cannot find the bulbs in the stores then try the Holland Bulb site.  They usually have bulk bulbs on sale this time of year. Daffodils and tulips are my favorite … (1 comments)

Farm for sale in Wilmore Ky. 94 acres with a lovely large ranch home. - 11/04/11 10:28 PM
This 94 acre ranch is only 20 minutes from Lexington.  The soil is rich and deep, the location is perfect and the home is spacious, warm and inviting.  The over 2300 square ft rambler is built on a walk out basement. You will be astounded by the floor plan.  A huge country kitchen with more counter space and cupboards than you can imagine is flooded with light from a very deep sky light.

The park like setting around the home is stunning.  Numerous picnic areas make this more than a yard and more intimate than a park.  The driving … (3 comments)

Improving garden soil. - 11/03/11 05:18 PM

Here are three things I suggest you to to improve the soil in your garden. 1.  When you rake the leaves make sure to turn a few into the soil with a spade and leave a layer of leaves on top of the ground.  Adding this organic matter will cause all kinds of good little … (2 comments)
