Write your representatives! - 09/30/08 03:36 PM
The situation in the House is serious. Without mortgage support, the housing industry on which so much of our economy depends, will certainly suffer. As Dick Gaylord, president of the NAR points out, the taxpayer will very likely get a positive return on this investment. Please take time to read this explanation, then contact your representatives to urge them to act now!

Mahler Eighth at Benaroya Hall - 09/24/08 12:26 PM

I've posted before that Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula are great places to live because of the easy access to Seattle's art venues, including the Seattle Art Museum, McCaw Hall, and Benaroya Hall. All you need do is take the 35-minute ferry to Seattle and walk (though most of us take the bus or cab to McCaw Hall). The ferry is on time 99% of the time (though last night the 5:30 sailing from Bainbridge was cancelled because M__k L__r___e forgot he had driven on and left his wheel-locked car behind: it turned out to be a good chance … (0 comments)

Suquamish next hot spot in Kitsap Count? - 09/21/08 03:32 PM
I've had enough e-mails about Suquamish in the past weeks to post this note again. There has been rapid progress on a new community center and a boat dock. What used to be the remains (known locally as The Slab) of the attempted destruction of a community in the nineteenth century will soon be one of the jewels of Kitsap County. Suquamish, north of Bainbridge Island and east of Poulsbo, is a checkerboard community. Some of the land is owned by the Port Gamble Tribe, some by non-tribal residents. Homeowners in Suquamish Shores, on land leased from the tribe, know the … (0 comments)

Pursuant to my post on the gala opening of the current symphony season Saturday night, the faint rumor on the street is that long-time director Gerard Schwarz is contemplating retirement, probably at the end of the '10-'11 season. I'll be interested to find out whether my sources are accurate . . .

How to beat SADD during Northwest winters - 09/08/08 03:10 PM
I moved back to Bainbridge Island after 30 years teaching and living in the Midwest and the Atlantic seaboard. I had forgotten about the winter rains here, forgotten about the fact that we are so far north that we have much less daylight during the winter months than our relatives "back East." We don't wish for white Christmases, we hope that the power doesn't go out during a windstorm. Many Northwesterners spend the winters in the sun belt. But my work is here. I thought I'd made a huge mistake moving back to wet winters until my brother told me about infrared … (4 comments)

A moving solution - 09/07/08 04:18 PM
Here's a note from subscriber Jean Jones of Salem, Oregon in response to a query about the best way to move household furnishings:Paul, You may want to check out how PODS works. My sister-in-law used them for their move from California to Arizona. Their new home was being remodeled so PODS just held their things in storage until they were ready to move in. It's really a neat way to do things--pack once and unload once. Thanks, Jean. A recommendation like this is worth a hundred from a company website. Your words might save a reader dollars, nerves, and friendships.

Virus Alert - 09/01/08 06:16 PM
There is a virus circulating with the title "UPS/FedEx Delivery Failure" in the Subject Line. You can receive a FAKE email from "UPS/FedEx Customer Service" along with an airbill number. It will say that they were un-able to deliver a package sent to you on such and such a date. It then asks you to print out the attached invoice copy and take it to their offices for pick-up. DON'T ... IT LAUNCHES THE VIRUS - Delete the e-mail immediately. This one is a good warning and is verified on the real FedEx, UPS and Snopes web sites. Please never forward … (2 comments)
