Inman Series on Social Media - 03/30/07 09:57 AM
It started with MySpace (Not really, but let's say it did anyway), but now it's morphed into niched markets, and Active Rain is one of those. To what do I refer? Social media that is. The Web 2.0. Inman has done an excellent three-part series on the rise of social media, what's working and what's not, and the role real estate is playing in it. (Registration is required, darn it.) Part OneOf course, when it comes to social media and real estate, AR is king of the hill. Part 1 of the series devotes much of its content to AR... "ActiveRain, the most prominent

Blog Copywriting an Essential Skill - 03/29/07 09:50 PM
In the offline marketing world, copywriters are a hallowed lot, at least the good ones. Not so much online. I recall a few years back reading about the different types of Internet-related jobs in terms of salaries paid, and copywriting was way down the list. In the offline world copywriters worth their salt can make a fortune! What does this have to do with blogging? Simply that honing your blog copywriting skills can make your blog more popular and, if you're in the business of making money with it, more profitable as a result. Two blogs I've found recently that can assist

Everyone's a Twitter About Twitter - 03/29/07 12:34 PM
I told myself I wouldn't use this blog as simply a place to repost from other blogs or as a means to get you to visit my other blogs by posting an excerpt. (While that's not an indictment of anyone else who might chose to do so, it seems cheap and tawdry to me.) Everything I write here I want to be original content. However, there's a new social media app out now that everyone (and I do mean EVERYONE) is talking about. Since part of my plan here at AR is to discuss social media, and since I figured some

Mary's Years Worth of Blog Ideas, Part I - 03/29/07 09:59 AM
Even though Mary McKnight is not blogging here at AR any longer, she continues to write great stuff on her RSS Pieces blog. (I can only dream of writing stuff that good!) She's hit another one out of the park today by starting a list of 364 (and a 1/4) blog posting ideas. Yep, one for every day of the year...well, almost. Speaking of Mary, I'm thinking of starting a petition drive to get her back! I know you miss her just like I do, and even though she's still blogging at RSS Pieces, it's not quite the same as having

Real Estate Technology Turns Marketing On Its Head Says Al Heavens - 03/29/07 08:14 AM
Real estate editor for the Philadelphia Enquirer, Al Heavens, just penned an article for Realty Times that's well-worth the read. (The fact that he credits me with convincing him blogs will be as necessary as cellphones notwithstanding.) In it, he addresses the basic "fear factor" many in real estate feel when it comes to adopting new technology like blogs and podcasts, and attempts to allay those fears by explaining how easy it is to make use of them and how little cost is involved in the process. Blogs, podcasts, wikis, RSS, video...those are just some of the new technologies Realtors are going

Blogging Turns 10 Years Old...Who's the Daddy? - 03/28/07 11:51 AM
CNET has an interesting article on the history of blogging, saying that the technology is now 10 years old, believe it or not. It asks the question, who started the whole ball rolling? I have a more pertinent question for this community, two actually. Who was the first real estate blogger? And, how many real estate blogs currently live in the blogosphere? I know Hanan Levin has been doing this for some time, so I'd have to think he was one of the early ones. Other than that, I've no clue. As to the second, in a recent panel in which I sat

At Heart, I'm an Evangelist - 03/28/07 08:24 AM
One thing you're going to learn about me is that I'm very evangelistic about blogging and all things Web 2.0. Often, you'll see me get on my soapbox and rail away at why Realtors need to be taking advantage of all the next generation net has to offer. Recently, I was at one of the realty conventions (can't recall which it was) where our company was an exhibitor, and got engaged in a conversation with a gentleman about the Internet. He saw it as a place to gather information, almost like going to a vast, virtual library. I had to counter his

Internet Radio Call-in Show with Active Rain Community Scheduled for Next Week - 03/27/07 05:36 PM
We got feedback from several of you regarding dates and times for the live internet broadcast Richard and I want to do with Active Rainers. We've decided on Thursday, April 5th, at 12:00 noon eastern. (That's 11 central, 10 mountain, and 9 pacific! :->) Here's the number to call-in to be on the show: (646) 915-9883 To listen via the Internet, go to: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/realtyblogging You can go there now and submit your email address to have a reminder sent you closer to the show air-date. One thing...Richard and I have never done this before, so we're sort of doing a dress rehearsal. Nonetheless, I am

Project Blogger...I'm a Coach! - 03/27/07 04:00 PM
Several weeks ago Jonathan Washburn had asked me to serve as a judge in the upcoming Project Blogger contest. Of course, I said I'd be more than happy to. Well, frankly, I let the whole thing slip my mind until I was reviewing some emails yesterday in a vain attempt to clear out my inbox. (Oh, how I could use a virtual assistant!) When I re-read Jonathan's post about the contest, I have to admit being envious of the 10 or so coaches on the list. See, back in the day I used to be known as "The Blog Coach." One

Commercial Real Estate Blogger Needed - 03/27/07 02:52 PM
One of my long-time blogger friends, Jim Turner, runs One-by-One Media, a blogger recruiting agency for companies needing bloggers. Jim is looking for a blogger to write about commercial real estate. In his own words... "The blog will be about Commercial Real Estate only and will be a aggregator feed site that aggregates Comm RE news. They would put up 200-300 words per day, and do that M-F Holidays and weekends excepted. The job pays $250US per month. They can contact me if interested at jturner@onebyonemedia.com" I told Jim that I was sure he could find qualified candidates here at Active Rain

Copying and Pasting From MS Word or Other Websites - 03/26/07 09:33 PM
I'm sure none of the Active Rain members do this, but I'm constantly confronting newbie bloggers with a simple admonition: DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM MICROSOFT WORD!!! Here's the thing. Blogs are built using something called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS for short). This file is the "master control" of everything that relates to your blog in terms of its look and feel. That includes the way it's laid out, the way the text looks, the indention of blockquotes, everything. Most popular blog platforms use what's known as WYSIWYG editors. That stands for "What You See Is What You Get." Actually, it

WordPress For Dummies Due for Publication Later This Year - 03/26/07 07:51 PM
UPDATE: The book is now available for pre-order at Amazon. It's scheduled release date is Sept. 24, but I have a sneaking suspicion it will be available before then. I'm a huge fan of For Dummies books. Not only do I qualify (though sometimes I think "idiot," "moron," or "imbecile" are more appropriate terms for me) and, thus, collect a lot of them, I've had the distinct honor of serving as technical editor on several and even contributing author on one. (No, Realty Blogging was not my first rodeo!) Well, I want to tell you about a new one that those of you

Realty Blogging Live Podcast for Active Rainers Only - 03/26/07 06:12 PM
Richard and I have been thinking of ways to repay the AR community for all its support of our book, Realty Blogging. We've decided one way to do that is by hosting a live call-in internet radio show within the next couple of weeks using Blog Talk Radio. This program will be for Active Rainers only and, thanks to BTR, will give you the opportunity to call-in and talk with Richard and I. And we really, really want you to call-in. We'd love to hear from you and discuss how blogs have impacted your business. I envision this working something like Car

Whirlwind Tour Through Real Estate Conferences - 03/26/07 04:23 PM
To borrow a quote from Garrison Keillor, it "hasn't been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon." I've been on the road most of this month traveling from on real estate convention to another. Since the first of March, I attended the Realty Executives convention where our company had an exhibit booth and where I was privileged to sit on a panel moderated by none other than Brad Inman himself, then on to the Coldwell Banker convention (both held in Las Vegas). After a brief respite - and I do mean brief - I jetted off to Palm Springs for the LeadingRE conference,

Your Take on Prudential's Actions Toward Trulia and Zillow - 03/26/07 04:11 PM
I'm sure by now you've heard of the debacle regarding Prudential essentially kicking Trulia and Zillow out of the recent convention tradeshow. If not, here's a link to some background information from the Blogging Systems blog. I'd like to get your reaction to this matter, especially those of you who are Prudential agents and brokers. Is it your opinion that Prudential has a right to kick whomever they wish out of sponsored events regardless of the reason, or do you feel it was a matter self-protection, considering Pru's relationship with Yahoo! Real Estate. Some say that Trulia and Zillow each represent a competitive

Marketing Has Changed. When Will Realtors Understand That - 03/15/07 01:24 PM
Our company, Blogging Systems, attends a great many real estate conferences, conventions, etc. Seems I'm on the road a couple of times per month. We sponsor many such events, Richard speaks on panels, and we normally exhibit in tradeshows associated with the event. I talk until I'm blue in the face about how, thanks to the Internet (particularly the next generation net, the Web 2.0), marketing has changed. It used to be "I talk and, consumer, you listen." Now, the consumer is using blogs, wikis, forums, social networks, SMS, podcasts and other forms of social media to do the talking themselves. Now,

Blogging Systems at LeadingRE Conference - 03/15/07 10:12 AM
I don't how many Active Rainers are members of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, but I wanted to make mention of the fact that we are in Palm Springs at the annual conference. If you happen to be here as well, please drop by our booth, #25, and let's chat about blogging. Oh, by "we," I mean Blogging Systems.

It's Time to 'Pay It Forward' to Active Rainers - 03/13/07 09:09 AM
I hope to start blogging frequently here to share my thoughts and opinions on real estate blogging. First, let me say that I am not a Realtor (nor do I play one on TV!). The company I serve as VP of Marketing, Blogging Systems, provides blog technology to the industry. Not being a real estate professional, I feel a bit at a disadvantage. I can't speak to issues routinely covered here by those of you who are. I'm on the outside looking in. I can speak to what I know though, and that is blogging. My goal will be to share

Our Thanks to the Active Rain Community - 03/13/07 08:58 AM
This is long overdue, but I want to say a personal word of thanks and appreciation to the members of the Active Rain community who read and reviewed the book Realty Blogging, which my business partner Richard Nacht and I wrote last year. It was met with a great response and we were, quite literally, overwhelmed. We are indebted to you for how well you received the book and the viral spread of its message which followed as a result. We want to do something to express our appreciation as well, and are working on an idea or two. Suffice it to

Realty Blogging Reviewed by LA Times - 03/13/07 08:36 AM
Richard and I woke up to some exciting news, our book, Realty Blogging, has been reviewed by the Los Angeles TimesThe review is largely positive thankfully, though the writer did point out a couple of flaws, mostly pertaining to blogs mentioned in the book. Here are some quotes..."The well-organized chapters encourage blogs that showcase expertise...""After outlining a convincing argument for starting a blog, the authors provide a detailed roadmap for creating a successful one...""Overall, Realty Blogging offers a timely collection of worthwhile information."If you've read the book, please feel free to write your own review and post it in a comment
