Inman News is announcing today the availability of a new research report on real estate marketing. Entitled “The State of Real Estate Marketing – 2007: Assessing Marketing Budgets, Trends and Opportunities for Real Estate Agents and Brokers,” the report, according to Inman, provides some "very interesting findings that shed light on where real estate agents will spend their advertising dollars over the next year."

Diva Marketing Talks on Blog Talk Radio - 07/23/07 10:50 AM
The first blogger I ever met in person is long-time friend and colleague Toby Bloomberg. We met in Atlanta at a marketing seminar and ended up sharing a drink in a biker bar. But that's another story. Let me leave it at this -- so far as online marketing, blogs and social media are concerned, Toby and I are joined at the hip.
Toby has invited me to participate in a new show she's doing at Blog Talk Radio entitled Diva Marketing Talks. The show takes place tomorrow evening (Tuesday) at 6:30 p.m. eastern time. (Somebody please help me remember that's 5:30 … (11 comments)

It Pays to be Nice: Thoughts on Your Online Reputation - 07/12/07 05:49 PM
Think being nice doesn't matter? It does. How about conducting yourself in an ethical manner? That too. Why? Aside from obvious reasons, the fact is, thanks to the Internet, each of us, to one degree or another, now has an online reputation we've got to worry about.
What do I mean? Do a search for Paul Chaney on Google (substitute your name).
There it is for everyone to see -- current and prospective customers, employers, business colleagues, you name it. Now, everyone who has an interest can find out something about you by reading your blog posts, comments on blogs, forum … (69 comments)

Happy Anniversary Active Rain - 07/11/07 12:29 PM
Just in case you missed it, Active Rain is one year old today. My congrats to Matt Heaton and the other principals on their hard work in creating what has become a phenomenal, runaway success. (Although, I'm still trying to figure out how they're making any money.)
Keep up the good work guys. I love AR!!!  (One suggestion...this year add trackbacks, would ya!)
Jessica Swesey at Inman has a nice post worth reading.

Bernice Ross Comments on Real Estate Technology Disconnect - 07/11/07 11:50 AM
NOTE: On this post, you get to be the "blogger." IOWs, I'm not making a comment at this point, but really, really want to hear from you. This is a continution of the conversation I started in response to Renwick Congdon's article about Realtors use of email as a marketing tool.
In its daily news, NAR's Realtor Magazine Online reported on comments made by real estate coach Bernice Ross expressing concerns over why Realtors have not gotten more actively involved in using blogs and other forms of social media...
Realestatecoach.com CEO Bernice Ross is surprised that only a handful of real estate agents … (12 comments)

Hodge-Podge Post: Several Items Rolled Up Into One - 07/11/07 08:47 AM
Call it laziness, but I'm going to briefly touch on several topics in this post. Just some quick hits.
Roboform OMG!!!! Get this app. It is a lifesaver. Roboform remembers all your usernames/passwords. I found this through an AR member and am so grateful I've agreed to sing at her next wedding. (That's a joke.)
TwitterIf you're all 'atwitter' about Twitter, you know it's a cool, but not yet perfect app. Messages are truncated to 140 characters, not all IM apps (I'm using that word a lot in this message aren't I) are supported, especially the more popular ones. Maybe you're like … (6 comments)

I Woke Up This Morning and It Was 1999 Again! - 07/10/07 09:25 AM
I receive RIS Media's daily email newsletter. It often contains good articles to keep a real estate neophyte like me informed on issues pertaining to the industry.
This morning's feature story really took me by surprise. It was Imprev's CEO, Renwick Congdon, saying that, according to NAR, "only 39% of agents considered e-mail as the primary tool used to stay in touch with active clients."
The actual stats broke out like this:
48% use the phone (the phone is good)38% use mailings (the kind that require stamps)24% use market updates 16% use e-newsletters 6% use email as a correspondence toolOK, please, somebody … (25 comments)

Fun with Captcha Codes - 07/09/07 03:57 PM
You know how Active Rain uses a word anytime you leave a comment on a blog post? It's called a Captcha code and it's designed to keep spam bots from invading. The term actually stands for 'Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, and was trademarked by Carnegie Mellon University.
Anyway, Active Rain's use of the technology is very readable and straightforward as in this example:
This is unlike, say, MySpace's code:
Though this is legible, what is not obvious, and only after umpteen attempts did I finally read it, but in the small print it says not to put … (14 comments)

The End of the Blogging A-List As We Know It? - 07/05/07 02:38 PM
Blogging has long had its list of celebrities. The tech bloggers have theirs. Marketing/PR bloggers have theirs. Real estate blogging has its own list of blog celebs as well.
UK-based cartoonist/blogger, Hugh MacLeod, yesterday rang the death knell of the A-list as we know it. He indicates that the rise of social networks like Facebook and Twitter (let me add Active Rain to the list) have circumvented the need for A-list bloggers to act as "hubs."
In the past, if you wanted to gain a following for your blog, getting the attention of one of this head of the class bloggers … (40 comments)

Project Blogger...Week #11 Judging - 07/05/07 09:00 AM
I have to admit that I've not been keeping up with Project Blogger as well as I should. I did follow week 11's judging though and see that Ines was judged favorably. (Woot!) Neither did I weigh in on that brouhaha over week #10's judging. I really didn't have anything to add to the conversation.
However, I must commend vflyer's Oliver Muoto was what I consider to be a clear understanding of the criteria and a concise analysis of each site based on it, and I say that acknowledging the fact that Ines did well.
All judging is subjective to an extent. … (4 comments)

Organizing My Digital Life Before Schizophrenia Sets In - 07/03/07 04:52 PM
Can you remember all your passwords for sites you access on the web? I can't. Not only that, can you remember all the social media sites you've signed up for? I can't either. I don't mean the MySpaces, LinkedIns or Facebooks, etc., but all those other less than famous sites that appear almost daily, some of which have names that aren't even pronounceable! You'd think the 16 year-old who created it got the name from a Star Wars character or something. (He probably did in fact.)
If you're at all like me (and let's hope you're fortunate enough not to be...esp. … (38 comments)

Changing RSS Readers from Bloglines to Google Reader - 07/02/07 03:43 PM
Back in the days when RSS still raised a question mark in most people's minds, I was using it to syndicate content from websites at a non-profit org where I served as director of onilne communications.
When I started blogging in 2003, I began, like most other bloggers to aggregate feeds, using Bloglines as my reader of choice. (Actually, I started out using Pluck back in the day when the company had a reader as part of their product lineup.) I grabbed up feeds like a man gone wild until I had more than could be read in a given day. … (7 comments)

Sony Bravia "Balls" Ad - 07/02/07 01:52 PM

I was reading an article on the implications of social media on advertising and branding, and came across some online ads by Sony for its Bravia HDTV product. Well, you have to see the ads; there are two. The one that is most impressive is the balls ad.
Take a few minutes break from your work and watch this (with speakers on). It's amazing!
