active rain: Three Most Important Real Estate Social Media Sites in Which to Participate - 10/21/08 11:36 PM
(This is directed to those of you just learning about social media, especially as it pertains to real estate. If you're already a kool-aid drinker, you probably know this stuff, but feel free to comment nevertheless. As always, I welcome countering points of view.)
I promised this yesterday, but got sidetracked by the announcement that NAR is looking for a social media manager. (See my post at Conversational Media Marketing.)
I believe for Realtors in the early stages just learning how to use the tools of social media, there are three very important social network/social media sites in which to … (20 comments)

active rain: Singing My Swan Song - 08/09/07 10:15 AM
They say all good things must come to an end and I'm afraid that's true of my participation here at Active Rain. This will be my final post.
Starting next week I'm moving to a new job with a different company, one that is not focused on the real estate industry. As much as I enjoy posting here, I can't make a business case for continuing. It has been fun though and my tenure ended on a high note with Blogger's Connect and participation in Project Blogger.
As to the new job, I'll be serving as Director of Production for Bizzuka.com. … (23 comments)

active rain: Project Blogger Winner Announcement at Blogger's Connect - 08/02/07 04:50 AM

And the winner is....Frances Flynn-Thorsen and Mary Pope-Handy!!!! Congrats to them and to all the contestants. Perhaps the best part of this whole exercise was that $5,000 was raised for CARE, a non-profit organization. (Sorry about the sucky photo. I took it with a cell phone and I guess my hand was moving. Go to Flickr for better ones...none up now, but will be hopefully.)

active rain: Happy Anniversary Active Rain - 07/11/07 05:29 AM
Just in case you missed it, Active Rain is one year old today. My congrats to Matt Heaton and the other principals on their hard work in creating what has become a phenomenal, runaway success. (Although, I'm still trying to figure out how they're making any money.)
Keep up the good work guys. I love AR!!!  (One suggestion...this year add trackbacks, would ya!)
Jessica Swesey at Inman has a nice post worth reading.

active rain: Fun with Captcha Codes - 07/09/07 08:57 AM
You know how Active Rain uses a word anytime you leave a comment on a blog post? It's called a Captcha code and it's designed to keep spam bots from invading. The term actually stands for 'Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, and was trademarked by Carnegie Mellon University.
Anyway, Active Rain's use of the technology is very readable and straightforward as in this example:
This is unlike, say, MySpace's code:
Though this is legible, what is not obvious, and only after umpteen attempts did I finally read it, but in the small print it says not to put … (14 comments)

active rain: Active Rain, a Nursery to Prepare You for 'Real World' Blogging - 04/18/07 10:13 AM
I've been looking at my stats and decided to do a little ciphering.
To date, I've written 40 posts, had a total of 248 comments, and 17,317 views. That means each post I write averages 6.2 comments and 433 views. Whew! That's heady stuff.
I don't share those statistics with you to try and impress. Many of you see far more traffic and comments than I. Heck, my apprentice Ines runs circles around me!
I do share them to make a point, however, and it is that Active Rain is not the "real world" in terms of blogging. (Tell you something … (19 comments)

active rain: Inman Series on Social Media - 03/30/07 02:57 AM
It started with MySpace (Not really, but let's say it did anyway), but now it's morphed into niched markets, and Active Rain is one of those. To what do I refer? Social media that is. The Web 2.0.
Inman has done an excellent three-part series on the rise of social media, what's working and what's not, and the role real estate is playing in it. (Registration is required, darn it.)
Part OneOf course, when it comes to social media and real estate, AR is king of the hill. Part 1 of the series devotes much of its content to AR...

active rain: Whirlwind Tour Through Real Estate Conferences - 03/26/07 09:23 AM
To borrow a quote from Garrison Keillor, it "hasn't been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon." I've been on the road most of this month traveling from on real estate convention to another. Since the first of March, I attended the Realty Executives convention where our company had an exhibit booth and where I was privileged to sit on a panel moderated by none other than Brad Inman himself, then on to the Coldwell Banker convention (both held in Las Vegas).
After a brief respite - and I do mean brief - I jetted off to Palm Springs for the LeadingRE conference, … (2 comments)
