The Signal - Movie Review

A weird transmission overruns every cell phone, radio and TV, turning people into murderers. With the city in anarchy, the streets filled with death and chaos, a young man named Ben wants to find his girlfriend, Mya, and escape to safety. Only one problem: She lives on the other side of town... with her husband. Who most likely won't want his wife running off with her lover while civilization is collapsing around them.

The Signal is so simple in terms of its principle that the film just thrust us into the midst of its epidemic of mass lunacy with no explanation ever offered as to the cause of the signal. Yet on a deeper level, the film is also a spoof of our technology-based world, a comment on how (as cliché as this may be) our electronic devices have enormous control over us. Think about how everyone shoots up to see if a ringing cell phone is theirs, or how people organize their schedules around certain TV shows, or how talk-radio listeners can be worked up into foamy frenzy by Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Springer. The signal in "The Signal" is simply an amplification of the hold on our lives that technology already has. Perhaps I'm being a bit analytical... but I call ‘em how I see ‘em!

It was an OK flick. Check it out if you're bored.

Hancock - Movie Review

A new superhero on the planet? Living in L. A.? There are heroes... there are superheroes... and then there's Hancock (Will Smith) - this line was directly from the movie poster. He saves people's lives and has a strong dislike for the wicked. So why is Hancock hated so much? Maybe it's because he a klutz!! OR Maybe because he's an @$$%^(#!!! The guy's just out of control. He leaps over skyscrapers in a single bound at supersonic speed but hasn't found a way to slow it down for the landing. The one-superhero wrecking crew hits like a missile causing some serious damage. He's also a boozer which may be partly to blame for his lack of control. The public has finally had enough - as indebted as they are to have their local superman, the citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn't the kind of man who cares what other people think - until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray (Jason Bateman), and the superhero begins to recognize that he may have a helpless side after all. Stressed, conflicted, cynical, and misunderstood, Hancock's well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping destruction in his path. He has the impulses of a child but is actually centuries old. It's a harsh, dark, rocky tale of a man on the edge of his own sanity who must come to grips with who he is, whatever that may mean.

I enjoyed Hancock it was a great movie. This is not your typical superhero movie i.e. Xmen, Superman and Iron Man. This is more a comedy superhero movie asking a big question - What if a superhero has problems that affect humans?

Well it's the 4th of July weekend for us Americans and there is only 1 movie opening this week to make the weekend start with a bang!!

Disturbia - Review

Disturbia, a thriller about a housebound teenager convinced his neighbor's a serial killer.

The flick opens with young Kale (LaBeouf) enjoying a nice day of fishing and bonding with his dad. Catastrophe hits on the way home, his dad is killed, and a year later, Kale's a brooding freeloader, blowing his top and punching out a teacher who makes an thoughtless comment about his father.

He's placed under house arrest at the home he shares with his mom. An electronic ankle bracelet monitors his location, tipping off the cops if Kale gets more than 100 feet from the house.

Kale settles in for playing videogames and downloading music, but his mom takes away his Xbox and cancels his iTunes subscription. Bored stiff, Kale becomes a peeping tom, spying on his neighbors, mainly the hottie who's just moved in next door, defiant Ashley. Ashley and Kale's pal Ronnie eventually are drafted into our hero's close watch of the hermit Turner, whom Kale thinks could be a much-publicized predator stalking beautiful women.

I don't want to give away too much...

This was a pretty good flick. Check it out.

Sweeney Todd - Review

While Sweeney Todd has its problems, they are minor, and Sweeney could be deemed Burton's best film in a long time. Burton nails it, beginning with the casting and continuing with the cinematography and the fantasy-nightmare version of 19th-century London. Sweeney Todd is the name assumed by Benjamin Barker, once a joyful London barber with a wife and baby daughter but now a toughened, angry man. It seems the wicked Judge Turpin desired Barker's wife and trumped up some bogus charges to get Barker shipped off to jail.

After a 15-year prison sentence, Todd gets home to find his wife dead, his home sold, and perhaps most terrible of all, his daughter placed in charge under Judge Turpin the man who wrongfully sentenced him in the first place. Fortunately for Sweeney, the woman who bought his home, Mrs. Lovett, put aside his razors for him, and promised to help him get his vengeance. Her meat pies are the most awful in London due to her low-quality meat (cat meat), and so the two arrive at a deal: he fulfills his bloodlust by slaughtering the occasional client, and she will turn the corpses into meat pies. Her shop becomes a smash hit!!!

It's a bit of morbid humor, however, I really enjoyed this flick. Check it out if you get a chance.

Live Free or Die Hard - Review

This flick has some problems, but they are forgivable. Live Free is a wonderful Die Hard sequel. It captures the outmatched feel of the first two pictures, and recovers McClane's trademark sarcasm that was missing in the all thumbs, shabbily plotted third film (Die Hard with a Vengeance).

In no way does Live Free measure up to the first. It would be unreasonable to think that it ever could. But as an extension of the story, Live Free delivers. Bruce Willis reprises the character of John McClane. Live Free or Die Hard begins like its predecessors (McClane having a personal crisis). Shortly after his argument with his daughter Lucy he's told to go pick up a computer hacker dork that is wanted by the FBI.

The fireworks start shortly after that. That's because the geek isn't only wanted by the feds, he's a major burden for the person who contracted him. That man, Thomas Gabriel, wants him 'wacked' in a big way. So big in fact, that he'll wipe out everything and anything associated to the dork with all he's got access to (and he's got a lot). Regrettably, for Gabriel, the computer nerd is in the guardianship of Mr. McClane and as we all know he is difficult as hell to kill. That being said, I loved this movie. If you like nonstop action you will love this!!!

Hotel Rwanda - Review

Make no mistake - This is not a film made for Rwandans, nor for anyone who already knows about the Rwandan tragedy of 1994. The flick is based on the true story of Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle), a Rwandan hotel manager whose world is turned upside down during his country's political turmoil and subsequent genocide. This movie is all about simple shocks. There are events so intricately premeditated that you know something is about to happen, but you never quite prepare yourself for what is actually on hand. Don Cheadle stars as Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of the prominent Milles Collines Hotel in Rwanda. He is a guy who loves his job and gives it all of the admiration and attention it deserves. Being in such a position of power gives him the opportunity to make friends with people in elevated places, by slipping them bottles of whiskey and offering them the finest in Rwandan cuisine. Paul is a Hutu, but his wife Tatiana is a Tutsi. As it is explained to a journalist (Joaquin Phoenix) in the film, the main difference between a Hutu and Tutsi is their nose (Tutsi's have slender noses). Then the mass execution starts. When the conflict burst into violence in 1994, the Hutus began a full-scale massacre of over 750,000 Tutsis and any Hutus who assisted them. Hutu's took to the streets slaughtering each and every Tutsi that crossed their path. Terrified and powerless, Tutsi refugees flood to the only Hutu they know they can trust (you guessed it Paul Rusesabagina). At first he is hesitant to get caught up in any situation that does not directly affect his family, but soon turns his five star hotel into shelter for the refugees, instantly thrusting himself into grave danger. In the middle of the madness, Rusesabagina hid more than 1000 Tutsis in his hotel. Using the same talents that made him successful as a hotel manager, he persuades, negotiates, and bluffs his way into keeping them out of harm's way. He keeps hoping for help from the UN or the US, but, as the journalist said, "they went on eating their dinners". The remainder of the film sheds light on the horrifying killings committed by the Hutus during this moment in time. It's truly an eye opening flick... check it out if you get the chance!

The Attorneys I recommend

I've worked with hundreds of attorneys over the past decade. It's easy to see how when you consider a real estate transaction requires three (3) attorneys... one (1) representing the buyers best interest, one (1) representing for the sellers best interest, and one (1) representing the bank. So I've compiled a list of the ones that I really like working with. They are always available and have always delivered everything they promised.

Jumper - Movie Review

The plot is full of fun events - David Rice discovers that he can teleport while in high school, and uses this "new powers" to get away from his home town as fast as he can. Several years later, he's living in an NYC penthouse, bankrolled by "jumping" past a bank's security system and taking (or should I say stealing) the loot in the vault. The setup of this flick was about as cool as you can get. Despite a super-illogical premise, the movie really sold me on how the whole thing worked within the first 20 minutes, and it didn't take long for me to take pleasure in the good times on top of the Sphinx together with David and his yummy-looking girlfriend. In fact, I enjoyed a lot about the film including the cutesy romance amid the two leads, the many "jumps" and globetrotting situations, the action sequences, many of which moved about as high-speed as the film, but still managed to amuse by their complete originality alone.

I did feel like some scenes were edited together a little too quickly though, to the point that I had to rev my brain up a few times, so that I wouldn't fall behind (not that the plot is too complicated, mind you). One of Jumper's strengths is also its greatest weakness... The filmmakers do a good job of creating a realistic universe - at least, in science fiction terms. That's why Jumper doesn't really feel like a movie - movies are typically self-contained things, with a beginning, middle, and end. Jumper feels less like a movie than a television pilot or a comic-book origin story, and I say that as a fan of both of those media. But once you give yourself over to this stylish sci-fi adventure, it's actually quite interesting and could find a following. I have to say I kinda liked it.

Borderland - Review

This flick is based on true events that took place in 1989. Like most of the Horrorfest releases, Borderland is basically a slight twist on an overdone formula. Borderland is a horrifying, coldblooded, borderline-mesmerizing thriller. On the eve of going their separate ways, three university friends from Texas decide to have one last "paint the town red" fling by crossing the border into Mexico. Their fun is cut short when one of them goes missing, snatched by a Satanic cult specializing in human sacrifice.

The story line is based on a true-life and publicly available case. Gore hounds looking forward to unrated Hostel level shocks may be upset, but fans of fist-smashed faces will have plenty to celebrate. As seems to be a familiar drawback for this year's Horrorfest, Borderland isn't really a horror movie.

I was not entirely sure what to expect as I crossed into Borderland, but the film mixes the dramatic aspects of a true crime story with elements of modern horror cinema. One of the most important things that a film can do (especially a horror film) is capture the audience's attention. In Borderland, the idea of how far you would go to protect your friends and your own life is at the forefront of what makes the movie so successful at capturing your attention and holding it through a real-life circumstance that with a bit of luck none of us will ever have the displeasure of living through.
