dogs: Wordless Wednesday - Who Me? - 01/11/12 08:38 AM

I was just about to leave for an appointment this morning when Ruby, my little thief in the night, once more managed to get under, through or around the gate to the living room, set up to keep her out.  When I caught a glimpse of her, she froze like a statue and looked as if she were saying, "Keep moving, I'm just part of the decorations."  It took everything in me not to fall over laughing.

dogs: Maybe This Is How Discoveries Are Made - 06/01/11 02:03 PM
My plans yesterday changed on a dime when I was brushing my little dog, Ruby.  Because she has long hair, half the yard debris winds up in my house on a daily basis.  She had just come in with the others from her early morning jaunt when I started picking through her copious coat.  I found the usual offenders, the sticks, the leftover falloff from the oak tree that sits close to my back door and generalized junk.  Then I saw a tiny, skinny, light brown thing that I was about to reach for when it moved.  I did a double take, … (13 comments)

dogs: For All My Animal Loving Friends - 01/23/11 02:06 PM
This had me screaming, laughing when I watched it.  I hope it tickles your funny bone too.  Pretty smart dog if you ask me.  Now if we could only figure out such straightforward ways to take care of the people who irritate us, wouldn't we be doing well.  Get some popcorn and enjoy!

dogs: Just When You Think Things Couldn't Get Worse - At What Price Care? - 10/20/10 03:58 PM
I was sitting at my computer at about 5 p.m. when the phone rang.  It was my friend who has been having a really bad run of luck lately.  Unfortunately he fell again last night and wound up breaking a couple of ribs and puncturing a lung.  To add to the misery, his cat was really sick, needing emergency intervention.  Since he couldn't drive, he asked me if I would go with his wife to the emergency vet.
We wound up at BrightHeart Emergency & Referral Center,  a most beautiful facility in Westbury on Long Island.  It looked like a classy, updated, … (13 comments)

dogs: The Price Of That Puppy In The Window - A Life Of Pain And Misery For Puppy Mill Dogs. Is It Worth It? - 09/22/10 04:49 PM
For the second time in as many months the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, New York, in  partnership with News Corp,  rescued 40 dogs from a puppy mill in Missouri.  Most of the dogs this time are shih tzus, and mixed breeds.  In a valiant effort to give the poor four legged prisoners of these commercial breeders a chance at a normal life, North Shore along with other rescue groups have been involved in the ongoing battle with these callously run businesses.  There has to be a way to put these soulless people out of business.  The only interest they … (13 comments)

dogs: Life's Transition, With A Little Help From A Friend - 09/11/10 02:24 AM
Reaching the end of a life is a difficult time for everyone involved. Sometimes the touch of an angel comes in the strangest package.
Though this video has apparently been around long enough for over 442,000 to have watched it, I was exposed to it for the first time this morning.  If you're a dog lover, it's a must see.  Even if you aren't, you'll want to take a look.  It does come with a tissue warning though.

dogs: North Shore Animal League - Port Washington, New York - 08/26/10 12:16 PM
If you travel north of the Long Island Expressway at exit 36, you'll pass the eastern end of the Miracle Mile at Northern Boulevard, a well established mecca for savvy shoppers at all price points.  Then, continuing north on Port Washington Boulevard, you'll pass the world reknowned St. Francis Hospital, one of the top heart hospitals in the country, on your way to the North Shore Animal League, the largest no kill rescue and adoption organization in the world.
In the business of saving the lives of pets through rescue, adoption and spay/neutering programs since 1944, they've been involved in large scale rescues from all over the nation.  They were … (5 comments)

dogs: In My World, It's Never "Just A Dog." - 06/25/10 02:51 PM
Anybody who has more than a passing relationship with me knows I'm a dyed in the wool, card carrying, flag waving dog lover.  One of my dearest friends used to call me the Mother Theresa of the canine set.  Never able to walk away from an animal in need, I can't tell you how many times I've stopped my car to rescue a dog in trouble.
I come by it honestly.  When I was a child so many days ended with my father walking in from a long day's work, followed by the cutest of canines.  The story he told my mother … (12 comments)
