maui: Watching Big Wave Riding at Peahi (Jaws), Maui - 01/06/12 03:20 AM
Yesterday, Maui was under a high surf warning for its North Facing shores. That means wave heights of greater than 25 feet could be expected at selected island reefs. For the casual beach goer, that generally means exercising extreme caution near the water. For big wave riders, that means it's time to head out to the famous big wave spot Jaws in Haiku. Island residents and visitors alike know it is a good time to head to the cliffs above the break for a fantastic spectacle. Up until a few years ago, Jaws was generally considered to be a wave that

maui: Sugar Cove, Spreckelsville, Maui Lifestyle Video - 09/12/11 07:47 PM
We have a great beachfront condo listing along Maui's North Shore at a small complex called Sugar Cove. Buyers love the complex for two reasons. 1. You literally have access to some of the best watersports in the world out your back door. You can windsurf, kitesurf and stand up paddle year round. Fall through spring, there is also surfing and tow surfing in the waters off shore. 2. The condos are incredibly spacious and live like a home. This unit has 3 bedrooms, 3 and a half baths and 2,030 square feet of living space. We created a video that

maui: Burly Maui Realtor's Feat of Endurance Cut Short by Mini Shark - 03/18/09 05:34 PM
The Maui News had a front page article on Maui Realtor Mike Spalding this morning. Spalding is an elite distance swimmer who was trying to join the very select ranks of swimmers who have crossed the wild and woolly Alenuihaha channel between the Big Island and Maui. The channel crossing is almost 30 miles in length! To date only two other swimmers have made this crossing successfully. Mike was trying to do it at the ripe old age of 61. Pretty impressive to say the least. According to the Maui News, Spalding was 11 miles into the swim when he felt

maui: Another Lazy Beach Day on Maui - 12/27/08 09:10 PM
My sister in law was recently over on a beach in West Maui when she came upon this Hawaiian Monk Seal enjoying a lazy day on the sand. Hawaiian Monk Seals are endangered species. Every once in a while they will camp out on a more popular beach for a few days at a time. Due to its limited numbers, humans are asked not to disturb these cute pinnipeds. To limit human seal interaction, wildlife officers and/or county lifeguards will occasionally rope off the areas where a seal is lounging. I have seen a few on the beach myself and

maui: Stimulated Senses Point to A Change in Seasons - 10/14/08 01:11 AM
Throughout the country, the change in season is clear. Leaves are turning on the trees, temperatures are falling with the leaves, and the days are growing shorter. Closer to the equator, the sense of seasons is less pronounced. Our average temperatures tend to vary only ten degrees a year. While we have some trees that lose their leaves, the vast majority keep their foliage year round. The days are growing shorter, but our variation in daylight between summer and winter is less drastic. That being said, the season changes are there if you turn on your senses. Today the change in

maui: 3rd Annual House of the Sun Solar Tour - 09/29/08 09:47 PM
The landscape of Maui is dominated by its dormant volcano Haleakala. The Hawaiian word Haleakala means House of the Sun. When one considers the meaning of Haleakala, the growing demand for alternative energy resources and our island's abundant sunshine, there is no wonder that more and more island residents are turning to photovoltaic energy and solar hot water for their energy needs. For those that are considering solar, there is a great opportunity to educate yourself on solar technologies this weekend. The 3rd annual House of the Sun Solar Tour is being held this Saturday October 4th. Tour participants will visit

maui: Recent Posts on the Maui Real Estate Blog - 09/07/08 10:52 PM
A sickly lap top has prevented me from being as active as I would like to be on the rain and on my other blog. That being said, I have a few recent Maui Real Estate Blog posts that are worth sharing. I recently came across a good blog post on seller perspectives on the housing market. Inspired by this post, I argue that one of the most important steps a seller can make when getting to list their home is to evaluate their expectations vs. the reality of the market. I posted an update on the status of recent county council deliberations on Maui Bed and

maui: A Couple of New Listings in Haiku, Maui - 07/26/08 08:36 PM
Earlier this week, I posted about our new listing in Haiku. It is a great opportunity in that there are two parcels associated with the property. In addition to buying the property as a whole, you can also buy each of the parcels individually. The one parcel consists of 4.255 acres with a three bedroom/one bath cottage. The cottage could use a little TLC, but it has great potential. It is surrounded by extensive lanais which make it an ideal locale for indoor outdoor living. The lot has been lovingly planted with a variety of tripicals and fruit. It is priced to sell

maui: Fruit and Flowers in Bloom on Maui - 07/25/08 05:15 PM
I was out at our new listing in Haiku yesterday. I had my camera with me and snapped some pictures of some of the fruit and flowers that I saw when I was walking around the property. As you come down the driveway, you go past a few big mango trees. It has been a banner year for mangoes. The ground below the trees was covered with ripe and over ripe mangos. There were also a few beautiful looking fruit hanging from the trees. The sellers have planted the area above their cottage with a variety of fruit, vergetables and flowers. As I

maui: Maui to go Plastic Bag Free? - 07/24/08 10:27 PM
I was pretty proud of my little town of Paia when it was the first in Maui to go Plastic Bag Free. The town's merchants voluntarily decided to get rid of plastic after residents tired of seeing plastic bags getting in the ocean and endangering sea life. Now, the whole county of Maui is considering a ban on plastic bags. The ban was approved by the county council sub-committee that reviewed the issue. Now it needs to get approval by the overall council. The bill would encourage the use of reusable bags, but would also allow for paper bags. Hopefully, we will see more people adapting to use

maui: 77 Nahele Road, Haiku, Maui, Hawaii - 07/22/08 08:33 PM
We have a great new listing in the beautiful Haiku area of Maui's North Shore. This property offers a tremendous sense of seclusion, but is really just a few minutes drive from Haiku School, the shops and restaurants at Haiku cannery, world famous Ho'okipa Beach Park and the charm of Paia Town. This property is an interesting opportunity in that it actually consists of two separate parcels. One parcel is roughly 4.5 acres and it includes a 3 bedroom/one bath cottage. The cottage is cute, but could use some TLC. The other parcel is just under 1.5 acres. Both parcels include an

maui: New Posts on My Other Maui Real Estate Blog - 07/19/08 07:01 PM
It has been a busy week for me, so I haven't been able to post on my Active Rain blog as much as I would like. In the slowing Maui Market, busy is a good thing so I can't complain. I have been able to blog with a little more frequency on my other Maui Real Estate Blog. The subject matter has been pretty diverse ranging from luxury market updates, to cultural events, to weather, to island sports and even something on some of Maui's efforts to develop more sustainable energy. Here are a few highlights. The Maui Ultra Luxury market

maui: Back in the Paddle Again - 07/07/08 02:29 AM
My apologies to Gene Autry, but I couldn't resist. My brother Billy and I have always enjoyed heading out for a stand up paddle after work. Maui's North Shore is an ideal location for coast runs on paddle boards. Coast runs entail paddling down the coast with the prevailing trade winds. With the wind at your back, you can often catch and ride unbreaking open ocean swells. If there are breaking waves along the way, we will usually stop and go for a surf. Unfortunately, our down wind paddles have ben pretty limited for the last year and a half. Billy blew a disc

maui: Maui Cowboy Country - 07/01/08 09:20 PM
When people think about Maui, they tend to think of white sand beaches, beautiful ocean waters, rainbows and tropical waterfalls. Somehow, cowboys don't make the list. However, cowboys or as they are known locally Paniolos are a big part of the culture and identity of Maui's Upcountry. The slopes of Haleakala have been ranching country since the 1880s. Communities like Makawao formed to help support the needs of ranchers. While there aren't any more feed stores in Makawao town, it still has a cowboy feel and it actively celebrates its Paniolo culture. Fourth of July weekend is the town's biggest celebration of

maui: Maui Mystery Fruit - 07/01/08 01:53 AM
Maui's ideal growing climate has led to the introduction of flora from throughout the world. You will see plants, fruit, flowers and vegetables growing with origins ranging from North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. I imagine the only continent without representation is Antarctica. Every once in a while, that means you will encounter some sort of flora that is a bit mysterious. I recently was out taking pictures of one of our office's vacant land listings with fellow AR member Georgie Hunter. We were out in the jungle area of eastern Haiku. Right as we were about to leave

maui: Price Reduced on Green Listing in Spreckelsville, Maui, Hawaii - 06/27/08 10:51 PM
Our beautiful listing in Spreckelsville just had a nice price reduction. This home balances green building practices with luxury amenities. The home is built with insulated concrete forms. On demand water heaters conserve energy help save on the monthly electric bill. Luxury features include granite, imperial plaster and high ceilings. All of this comes in a great location. maui: A Guide to Surfing On Maui - 06/22/08 01:36 AM
There has been a good run of surf on the South Shores of Maui over the last couple of weeks, so I was inspired to to write a blog on the surf scene in Maui. I am writing this with a little bit of trepidation. I am like most surfers in that I like to surf uncrowded waves. I am a wary of adding to the crowds, but if someone has a keen interest in learning to surf who am I to deny them of their opportunity. I am going to keep things pretty general while giving a few tips for beginners who

maui: Green Options Available in New Maui Subsivision - 06/17/08 07:36 PM
The Cottages at Kulamalu is a new 40 unit development underway in the Upcountry Area of Maui. National homebuilder DR Horton has partnered with Maui Based Rising Sun Solar to give prospective homebuyers a number of green options. Buyers may opt to have net metered photo voltaic systems installed as well solar hot water heaters and solar powered attic fans. The builder is also offering buyers the option of including all energy star appliances. To my knowledge, this is the first Maui development where a menu of green options are available. Hopefully, we will see similar options available on other Maui

maui: Bamboo Homes in Hawaii - 06/04/08 02:02 AM
I continue to field an increasing number of inquiries from buyers who want to build green. One option that I like to make my buyer's aware of comes through a Maui based company. Bamboo technologies is offering attractive, cost effective green homes. The eco friendly attibutes of bamboo construction are impressive. A conventional home built with lumber from hardwoods may require up to an acre of trees. It takes hardwoods between 30 and 50 years before they can be harvested for timber. Bamboo on the other hand requires harvesting an area not much larger than the footprint of the home. Typically it takes 5-7 years for
