The release of the Employment Situation Report is the main event on the economic calendar in the week ahead. However continued civil unrest in Egypt is expected to stir up commotion in the marketplace and potentially dictate the direction of mortgage in advance of jobs data on Friday morning. After ending an eight week rally last Friday, bond investors will be keeping a close eye on the sentiment of stocks and shifts in foreign exchange rates for leadership.

The week ahead is busy. President Obama will give the State of the Union Address on Tuesday night.  The Federal Reserve will hold a two day FOMC meeting to discuss monetary policy and share an updated outlook on Wednesday. We'll get a three housing reports as well as a three Treasury coupon auctions totaling $99 billion.  Along with the foregoing, the New York Fed will conduct four QEII open market Treasury operations. And rounding out the week ahead,  the Q4 earnings season continues with key reports from 3M, Procter & Gamble, Boeing, Caterpillar, Ford, Honeywell, and Johnson & Johnson.

If the past is evidence for our future then look for the economy to gain some traction in this new year. The Dow was up .84% in the first week of trading for 2011. Historically (The January Effect) the Dow has risen on the year 74% of the time that the first week was positive.

The week ahead should be a relatively quiet one. The housing market has 3 new reports of interest to investors. They will be looking at new data on housing starts, building permits, existing home sales, and homebuilder sentiment.
Other news that should garner investor attention is the ongoing debate over whether or not the Euro Zones rescue funds need new "stress tests".

Benchmark interest rates spent last week that bouncing around a wide yet well-defined range in advance of the highly anticipated release of December's Employment Situation Report.  While it seemed like ADP stole the show on Wednesday after a much stronger than expected report, the official read on the labor market turned out to be bullish for rate watchers. Payroll growth disappointed and although the unemployment rate fell to a 19 month low, an asterisk was needed to explain the cause of that so called improvement.
