It was really too late in the day for "good light" but I headed out anyway on a whim to Carlsbad. I'm relatively new to Temecula, so this was my first time ever to Carlsbad. I love going places I've never been in my life and this was no exception. As expected, the lighting was poor, but I had fun and some of the shots turned out nice. I just wished I'd taken my tripod...

This shot isn't especially perfect, in fact it is rather flawed, blurry, taken off balance and the use of flash is too obvious, but the emotion generated is irreplaceable. The "pose" lasted a brief second and the subject was off and running. The family was quite pleased, as was I, to have this flawed photograph.

This was shot downstairs from our hotel. I didn't have to go anywhere, just set up the camera and waited for color, which did not disappoint that day. Some days, in Maui you get the gold auburn sunsets and a little less often you get the brilliant red and orange tones. This day was especially colorful.

It looks like a scene from a movie about John the baptist, but it's just snorkelers wrapping up a session as the sun goes down again at the Black Rock in Kaanapali Maui. Every night at sundown someone lights all the torches on the rock and then emulates a legend, throwing his belongings and then himself into the water. He always swims to shore.

The beach really is black. Jet black. Located in Waianapanapa State Beach in Maui just a few north of famous Hana, tucked away down a rough side road is this little focal point of incredible beauty. Visitors are always few- most are on their way to or from Hana, counting the 600 curves in the road. This place will take your breath away and make you forget you're in this world.

Well blended elements are often unnoticed.
The flavor of this photograph is not obviously announced, but if you didn't have that one dark red building at the right, the picture would actually look newer. The horse and buggy are authentic enough, but the modern cars would detract more from the picture except that the old red building distract just enough without drawing the eye away from the subject.

No, I think this guy, real Sheriff of Julian, CA has been around for some time. It's rather entertaining how much the local community can achieve on the public service front. I wonder where the regulations are that cover how his uniform is worn?

A fleeting moment when I turned around and saw this dove alight on a lamp at the edge of the reception area. The sun was just fading after sundown and there was just enough light to get a good exposure without much blur. A moment later the dove flew away.

Another "story within the story" as the bridal party was setting up for a posed shot, one of the caterers walked by with some bruschetta. Everyone was hot, tired and especially hungry. The pose broke up and everyone had some of the treats!

It wasn't til later I learned this. I was so busy trying to capture everything nice about this wedding and never noticed the silk petals weren't real. They were perfect for this wedding. The bride and groom were a little into gothic and rave styles. I'm glad the petals weren't black!

Sometimes it's the story within the story. A moment is captured that tells a story about more than just the ceremony or the traditional events. Sometimes it's someone looking on or a word between friends and family that will be cherished as much as or more than the events that are receiving all the traditional focus.
