Sunday April 22, 2012 is Earth Day in Markham, Ontario,  Join in the celebration at the Millennium Bandstand and Park on Main Street Unionville between 10 am and 4 pm.

Markham residents are invited to help themselves to some free garden compost made from last Spring's collected leaf and yard waste. Bring your own shovels and containers. There is a six container limit per vehicle. Compost will be available until 2:00 p.m. or while supplies last. This is a one day event only on April 21, 2012.  Rain or shine.
Free for Markham residents. Proof of address required.

VIVA Transit to start charging fares on April 1, 2012
The free fares that VIVA Transit was offering to riders for the past two months ended on March 31, 2012.  The free fares were offered as compensation due to the preceeding three month strike.
Effective April 1, 2012, riders will need to begin paying VIVA Transit fares.
Fares went up on January 1, 2012 and can be seen at www.yrt.ca.

Congratulations Toronto on your Earth Day 2012 Power Reduction!
Congratulations to City of Toronto residents for your participation in Earth Day 2012.  The Toronto Star reported that Toronto Hydro announced that power usage was down 6.8% during Earth Hour.  This is an impressive improvement over 2011's Earth Hour when usage dropped by 5%.
In 2013, perhaps Toronto can do better and match the 10% drop that occurred in 2010 or the 15% drop in 2009.
Over 6,494 cities, including 511 Canadian cities and towns, in 150 countries participated in the sixth annual Earth Hour.
