York Region Transit - 30 Days of Free Transit
York Region had announced during the York Region Transit / VIVA Transit strike that started in late October 2011 that York Region would provide free transit for at least 30 days after transit operations resume after the conclusion of the strike.
The parties to the strike have reached agreement on a new contract and transit operations will resume on February 4, 2012.
York Region will announce in the near future when the 30 days of free transit will commence.

York Region Transit / YRT / VIVA fares to increase on January 1, 2012
York Region Transit and VIVA fares will be increasing on January 1, 2012 as announced in an announcement dated September 23, 2011. YRT Mobility Plus fares are also being aligned with conventional fares at the same time.
This will be the first fare increase since 2009 and affects all cash fares, tickets and passes with the excepiton of the GTA weekly pass.

VIVA bus strike expected starting Monday, October 24, 2011
Drivers and mechanics for VIVA express buses are expected to go on strike in the early morning hours on Monday, October 24, 2011.
If there is a strike, five VIVA express bus routes that operate in the Towns of Markham, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket and the City of Vaughan would be affected. These routes have been contracted by VIVA to York BRT Services to operate.
Note that routes operated by the Toronto Transit Commission ("TTC") are NOT affected.

York Region Transit (YRT) / VIVA strike suspended for February 21, 2011
Previously, I had advised about the planned York Region Transit / VIVA strike that would affect part of the transit system starting on February 21, 2011 (see activerain.com/blogsview/2147221/transit-strike-in-york-region-to-start-on-tuesday-february-21-2011).
According to the latest update, the planned strike has been suspended. Union members will be voting on a deal in the near future. This is the second time in the past week that a planned strike has been averted.
Therefore, all YRT / VIVA services will continue to operate on regular schedules.

York Region Transit has announced that it will be making changes to the schedules of more than 40 bus routes on YRT and VIVA in York Region on February 27, 2011.
Transit users should review their bus route schedules to determine whether their routes are affected. In many cases, buses are scheduled to come less frequently. In some cases, there are cancellations or reductions of service at certain times of the day.
