Stepping Out---Once Again.... by Feng Shui Long Island New York

I sometimes believe that we all "trip" through life....with some fascinating successes and some really difficult falls---sometimes flat on our face. When I fall (both literally and figuratively) I sometimes stay there for a moment, take a deep breath and pick myself back up again. What choices do we really have? And how long can we stay down there?

For some people it takes longer to bounce back up. They need time and space to recover, think things through, learn a lesson and begin to heal from the experience. But eventually they too will get themselves up again and get back into the game. I guess it's what taking chances are all about; if you're willing to step out of your box, try something new then you risk the failure that may come with it.

Some people are not willing to take risks. They stay where they are emotionally comfortable. And just when I believe I've overcome one thing, sure enough something ELSE pops up with the same question: Do I want to step out of my safety zone AGAIN? Oddly enough, I usually do. I keep taking those risks and have, over the years, taken some pretty difficult falls. And then I remember an old favorite and head to You Tube to listen:

A BILLION Dollar Home--And it's based on New York Feng Shui! by Feng Shui Long Island New York

Feng Shui in New York.....Apparently The Mandarin Hotel hit a home run with Nita Ambani as well.

I thought this was interesting enough to pass along. Especially since the economy is not at it's best at the moment. Custom homes are one thing, but THIS is the world's first BILLION dollar home---and it's built on the principles of Vastu.

Vastu and Feng Shui have been intermingled for years as many of the properties and the ideas behind it (such as The Elements and The Energy) remain the same. Vastu is at least as old as Feng Shui (which is estimated to be between 3 to 5,000 years old) and is practiced in India primarily.

There are not many (if any) Vastu Practitioners to my knowledge in the United States so it's likely that people from India that believe in Vastu (and many do) also believe in Feng Shui and will call a Feng Shui Consultant. I have done several homes in the tradition of Feng Shui for my Indian clients and some businesses as well.

The Mandarin hotel has caught my eye as well on one occasion when I was in New York City and passing by. I had decided to stop in and see it and of course took a few shots of it. Nita was impressed as well and decided to make her home using the principles of Vastu/Feng Shui from this New York City hotel.

This home, if you read the article by Forbes, was built with the Principles of Vastu. Custom built of course. I was interested to see the pictures (which you can view from the link) of both the Interior and Exterior. Some of the way it was built, from a Feng Shui Perspective, would not be considered the best aspects. But with the money invested in it, I hope it came out to be a dream home for its owners!

There's NO Feng Shui in The Hamptons?

I was thrilled to hear the Hamptons Home and Garden Show on Long Island, New York is coming up and went to check the details of the show. If you've never been out to The Hamptons, it's a very special place in New York. While I'm not there as often as I am in the City (in the summer be prepared for major traffic jams), the Spring is the perfect time to go and every year a huge event is held there.

It covers the entire weekend and vendors from all over come to show the latest and greatest. The lectures are free and this year cover everything from Specialty Food and Liquor tasting, a live auction and a free fitness evaluation with nutritional advice to a huge array of speakers on almost every subject imaginable. The second day of this event is for "Green" only and while reviewing who's giving lectures and what they are pertaining to, I wondered "Where's the Feng Shui." I happen to know first hand that Feng Shui is VERY popular in the Hamptons and in all parts of it so I'm surprised there is no speaker for it.

Granted, a Feng Shui Consultation in the Hamptons would cost a bit more then a "regular" consultation; going through a Mansion and making suggestions as well as the blessings would take considerably more time then a more "normal" sized home. The architecture of the Hamptons comes in all shapes and sizes of homes, new and old and they all fascinate me. I believe my favorite is situated on Dune Road (or, unfortunately, what is left of Dune Road) with a perfectly ROUND house that has always amazed me.

This wonderful event is in Southampton, a short ride (unless you get caught up in traffic) from The Hampton Bays, my own particular favorite part of the Hamptons since I was young. Ah, the good old days....When weekends rolled around my sister and I would throw a few things in the car and head out to "Hot Dog Beach" in the Hampton Bays. The band (and the dancing) started at 12:00 pm every day...one long day and evening and lots of fun.

Ok, enough reminiscing. If you're out in the New York area and would like to see the show of the season, it's right at the Southampton Elks Lodge and Fairgroundsin Southhampton, Long Island, New York with 17 acres of displays and a drawing for a free $2,500 shopping spree at Waldbaum's supermarket. One of the suggested places to stay (which I can personally recommend) is The Baywatch Motel and Marina at 72 Foster Avenue, Hampton Bays, New York.

New York & Feng Shui: Blending the Two Together

I always wonder if you took a random group of New Yorkers' and asked how many believed in Feng Shui what the percentage would be. I would love to do one of those polls where you just choose random people and get their thoughts and ideas of New York Feng Shui.

As a Feng Shui Consultant for New York City you know you'll find me there often with my daughter who had been training for five years and I am now convinced knows as much as I do. She is terrific at a consultation and no longer needs a senior Feng Shui Consultant with her; I'm very proud of her. Besides my own on site training with her she's had some of the best teachers around and has attended many intensives.

And one of the best ways to teach is what we had the opportunity of years ago as well....on site Feng Shui consultations where you can SEE the homes, offices, businesses and corporations; you develop Feng Shui Eyes and Feng Shui Intuition and feel the Energy surrounding you.

New York Feng Shui is different from Long Island Feng Shui because the surrounding energy of any place you are doing is so different. It may just be the energy of New York City that always has me wanting to go back. Today I received a call from a client I had done who lives in Staten Island and is looking for work in New York City who feels the same way about it's energy.

Which has nothing to do with this post, actually. This post is just sharing a small piece of New York City on an absolutely beautiful day in one of it's many smaller parks I hadn't seen before. It's called Madison Square Park but interestingly is nowhere near Madison Square Garden....it was, however, on the way to our destination....you'll have to come back another day to see where we were heading this time.

Feng Shui Tip: What's Supporting YOU these days?.....by Feng Shui Long Island, New York

I had a wonderful Feng Shui Consultation in New York recently with an interesting story. The client who had called had been fortunate enough, years ago to have had a Feng Shui Consultation with a Feng Shui Master who came from China. He practiced what is known as the "Form" School of Feng Shui, an art that I don't believe is taught here any longer.

It is one of the oldest schools of Feng Shui that we are aware of and he advised my client in his office setting to be "backed up in life." The Form school teaches you to have the Mountain at your back for support and water in front of you for Energy. You are also supported on both sides when this method is done correctly. He advised my client of some changes to make and his business began to turn around and prosper.

We do, in Feng Shui, still check what is "backing" us up in life. Whether it is a headboard for sleep (wood is recommended, strong and sturdy) or the mountains behind us, many of us feel it is an important aspect. We all need support in life, from our friends, family and even our home and business.

This reminded me of another client I had done recently who was having some issues with finding a job. Although her resume and credentials were outstanding, it just hadn't come in yet and in seeing her office space, I could see why. She wasn't supported in this area, in fact, it was just the opposite. Behind her was exercise equipment (her office was an excellent space for an exercise room as well) but behind her computer-AND her back was a mirror. There is not only no support in a mirror but in fact it was just "pushing" things back at her making find a position difficult.

The mirror, however, was needed for exercise so we decided to have her match the blinds that were in there for window coverings and they can be raised and lowered when she needed to make changes in her space between work and exercise. An easy and simple "fix" for a Feng Shui issue. Check what is supporting YOU in your area where you work and sleep. It's nice to be "backed up" in life.

Your HEALTH in Feng Shui from a Feng Shui Consultants' Point of View

As much as I love to put a positive spin on things we can do to change the Energy in Feng Shui to flow in a positive direction, there are several things most clients seem to be stuck on. They won't change them no matter what. Are they hard or difficult? No. Do they cost any money? Again, no. But even begging hasn't worked. They stay...period.

All I can do is leave them with WHY I would like to make the changes and allow them to make their own decisions. And this is where experience kicks in as well. I have seen issues occur over periods of time because I keep in touch with so many clients.

So what am I rambling about NOW? Two things, actually, that I would love to change in client's homes, businesses, corporations or anywhere they happen to be. Ceiling Fans are one. And the "newest" trend of constant use of the Garage Door to come in and out of the house. Those garage doors are convenient and most homeowners want them, they DO make life easier. And certainly when you have groceries or the weather is bad they are wonderful.

Never addressing the front door in Feng Shui, however, is a mistake. It is called "The Mouth of Chi" and VERY important to use on a regular basis to allow the good energy for every area of your life to enter. It's not difficult, it doesn't cost a cent and it actually, to me, makes GOOD sense. Just TRY it, I'll tell them....some will and many won't. They love the ease and convenience of their garage doors.

My other concern is Ceiling Fans. I have never had one as I have very high plaster ceilings and years (and years) ago when I had wanted one installed, I was advised against it by a friend. One who had the same type of walls and ceilings. It made a mess, she said and cracked the rest of the plaster; that was enough for me to hear. But they are very popular in both Long Island AND New York City.

In certain places and when a client won't be under them for long periods of time, I don't mind them very much. But I'm sure many of you will relate that they are often in BEDROOMS directly over the bed. This is a cause for concern because from a Feng Shui perspective, they are sharp blades with the ability to cut Energy. It is called "Cutting Chi" or "Cutting Sha" and I'm sure you've heard the terms before. Particularly when your body is at rest, it is most Open (or most vulnerable) to this type of Energy and it can, over a period of time, take a toll on your health. Leaving the fan but not turning it on is one alternative; even having a regular standing fan which has "barriers" in front of the blades is a better solution for those who absolutely are addicted to the fans.

They now have room air conditioners as well that can help for these areas. But clients love their fans. They look at me in horror at the thought of removing them or even just leaving them off while they are lying under them. I am afraid the must become addicting judging by some people's reaction to the suggestions.

This is not a post to scare anyone but to make them aware of what WE consider harmful---and WHY. And give you some simple alternatives to replace them that perhaps you won't mind. They do not cause illness overnight but CAN possibly cause it over TIME. And it's something to be mindful of....especially if you are thinking of installing one.

New York Photos & Feng Shui: A Bird's Eye View.....by Feng Shui Long Island, New York

Not long ago on one of these beautiful days a client was gracious enough to walk back to Penn Station with me after a New York Feng Shui Consultation. She asked why I would travel to New York City to do my Feng Shui Consultations when I live on Long Island. I explained how much I love the City and that I felt the Energy was very different in NYC than on Long Island. It can also be more challenging to do all the New York Apartments, Condos, Co-ops, Studios and Businesses because they came in so many sizes and shapes. There are Feng Shui solutions to everything that are easy and inexpensive and I loved the opportunity of seeing so many different types of housing.

This was not a day for Feng Shui, however. This particular day was, according to the weatherman, going to be a beauty. As many of you know, I love to tell a story with pictures and these I hope will take you right with me-to the top of New York City. Passing the Empire State building that morning, it occurred to my daughter that it had been many years since we had been up to the top; on a whim, we did just that.

It occurred to me later WHY I don't do this spectacular scene often-the WAIT. On a weekday and during the morning hours, we still waited approximately two hours to get up---and another to get down. Think of all the TIME I'm saving you : )

It's Time to put Your Feng Shui INTENTIONS Into Everything You Do!...by Feng Shui Long Island & New York

We ALL know we have been Spring Cleaning....it was such a long winter for so many of us; fact is we couldn't WAIT to start shedding the old. In Feng Shui we always let go of the old to allow the NEW and positive Energy IN.....and that's exactly what we all need right now, a Good dose of FENG SHUI.

One of the things I believe that is misunderstood most in Feng Shui is that it's not necessarily the big changes you are making that will make a difference to your lives and the quality of them. It is often the small, simple things we do, something they are just the things we do on a regular basis.

If you believe at all in THE SECRET or The Law of Attraction, Intention is just another word for it that we've been using for YEARS to create the lives we've been looking to create. But often we forget the most important thing when making ANY changes in our surroundings: Putting our INTENTIONS into EVERYTHING we do. It's certainly simple enough and it absolutely can't hurt-give it a try.

Whether it's a bigger Springtime job you are undertaking (like the Garden), use visualization to picture and actually SEE more abundance in your life. Or if you're doing something simple like dusting, see it as a way of cleaning out stagnant energy and infusing new and positive energy while you are doing it. Your surroundings really do have a deep and profound impact on our lives; Professor Lin Yun says that INTENTION into the changes accounts for about 80% of the changes we are likely to see, while the actual change itself accounts for only 20% -- Pretty high statistics and something definitely worth investing in. It won't cost you a penny and maybe just a few minutes of your time.

Think about adding your Intentions to ANYTHING that you are doing-and there are SO many things we do each day we are likely to just breeze through them without thinking. Try getting some Feng Shui EYES for this, clean everything with the Intentions of cleaning out the old and unuseful to bring in more of what you need and want. Truly cleaning out and lightening up by selling things or donating them create even MORE room---think about it. It can't hurt and you WILL feel better!

I have the deepest respect for Forest Gump who was SO right when he said "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know WHAT you're going to get." But your favorites are in that box as well....put your order in for them and they'll come along, probably when you're least expecting it. I love surprises and bet you do, too.

The "Business" of Feng Shui.............by Feng Shui Long Island, New York

Years ago (and yes, still today on occasion) I will do a Feng Shui Consultation for someone for free. There are people that contact me that have very sad situations in their lives and simply can't afford to pay for one. Not being the "business-person" I should have become years ago and believing so strongly that Feng Shui CAN and WILL help them, I will do a full consult and not charge them.

Otherwise I charge what I believe to be below the regular "going rate" so that people from all situations can afford them. For that reason I may find myself in a Mansion on the North Shore of Long Island or a Corporation in New York to do a Feng Shui Consultation or I may find myself in an area locally where we are freezing because the owner can't afford to turn on the heat. They, too believe in Feng Shui and the power of changing your thinking and beliefs and changing some things or eliminating them from your environment to make you feel better and allow fresh, new Energy to come in-and it does!

While doing a paying customer recently by distance I didn't ask for the first part of my payment until after we had begun...half way through to be exact. So I would receive half the payment after the first half of the Consultation and the second half when we finished. Once I didn't get paid the second half. And it happened again recently (for which I've just changed my policy). I had not called the woman for payment but had emailed her....and got no response. I decided to let it go. While telling a friend about the situation she asked me why I gave up my power to other people.

It's funny that people who are close to you can see things in you that you don't. I do often give up my power because it is "easier" or I don't want to have an argument with someone. So I'll give into a situation. For the many of us that do that, it's time to stop giving up our power. Thinking about it later, I did in fact call the woman who had not paid me. While she made several excuses for it, I did end up getting the final payment.

How often, I wonder, do I do that without even realizing it? For me, I'm reclaiming something I never should have given away---my power in a situation. If someone is wrong, I will tell them. If they are unfair, if they've hurt my feelings I let them know. They may not necessarily WANT to know but then I believe, It's up to them whether or not to rectify the situation. I believe it's the best policy and if someone is REALLY your friend, they are going to listen, carefully, to what YOU have to say.

I'm sorry I learned this so late in life but better late then never. Believe me, I'm not looking for trouble but I am, finally, reclaiming my power.

You Meet the People You are Supposed to Meet (Sometimes more than Once).......by Feng Shui Long Island, New York

I hate to blame the bearer of bad news; it’s really NOT fair. I’ve noticed lately that I’m beginning to dislike the arrival of my mailman. Since I have gotten out of the hospital, the bills have been coming faster then I can keep up. You would think they might let you get a bit WELL before they’d start sending these things.

Funny with what I’m paying for an individual policy (over $800.00 per month); it amazes me what is NOT covered. Things that you wouldn’t know about, of course, unless you required a hospital stay. I will have to wonder if it should ever come up again if I can afford to go!

And you also forget the occasional GOOD things you can receive. A hand-written card, for example. From someone you don’t know so you have to hunt for your glasses so you can see exactly what it is. Some of you might remember a while ago I wrote a post about being contacted for a brief “Thank You” note for an article in Woman’s Day. Janene Mascarella from The Long Island Exchange had previously done an article/interview with me on Feng Shui and when she got the assignment for Women’s Day, she thought enough to contact me for a submittal. She did advise me, at the time, that it also had to be approved by the editors at Woman’s Day. I didn’t think of it at all until I received an email from Janene that they had decided to publish it.

And of course what you thought would happen never does. It was relatively early today when my son got home from work---bringing in the MAIL. Some of you might remember this post: 100,000 Points and One HECK of a Journey: DETERMINATION....A Feng Shui Story and the fact that I had found my long lost cousin because of it. You don't necessarily get the person or thing you EXPECT in life....or DO you?

Somehow, 1996 and TODAY are feeling very familiar. I resonated with Feng Shui and when I heard of the school right here on Long Island there was no way I was NOT going to go. It's amazing what can happen when you are so determined.

There were, of course, more bills—and that note which said: “I am a friend of Deborah Rose and came across your note in Woman’s Day. I’d meant to contact you sooner but had forgotten about it and ran across it today. I thought you might like her address.” It was signed by someone I don’t know but will always treasure and gave me an address for Deborah that is in New York! It’s actually her card which shows she has become a Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master and provides Reflexology.

What’s going on Here? If life has gone full circle, what happens next? I’m still not sure if yesterday was a step back or forward in going back to my former school and today I find the person that gave me the direction of Feng Shui (no pun intended). So what happens AFTER full circle? Are we back where we started? I am thrilled, of course and wrote Janene to let her know. And my AR friends who are there---even when the mailman doesn’t come : )

Spring Views and Positive Inspiration: Transformations! by Feng Shui Long Island New York City

Spring was so late in coming this year; or perhaps it just felt that way. It's pretty much remained colder then normal and rainy in the Northeast, making the days, although longer, feeling just as gloomy as they were. I'm sure my impatience for warmer weather and sunshine didn't help.

I got up early the other morning and typically do some work on the computer first-and heard, for the first time, SONG. A beautiful bird obviously close to the house decided to let loose and sing his heart out....no doubt he was feeling well, too. And I remembered that Spring is not just a season we arrive at it's also a state of mind. To allow the new in and the old out....it's funny that so many of us are into Spring Cleaning and it's for that very reason, we are READY to allow the new IN and realize it's time to let go of the old, the things that aren't working for us or that haven't been making us happy or serene.

To me Spring is more of a transformation. Anyone that reads my posts from time to time will often see a butterfly; they are "my" sign because they are a literal sign of Transformation. While many people are uncomfortable with change, it's a constant in my life and I love it (most of the time). Springtime reinforces that; plants and flowers are budding and some are blooming (I have one particular tree that blooms for just about a week---I treasure every day of its blooms and it reminds me that it's time to start again).

Feng Shui IS transformation; for my clients and for myself. I learn as much from every one of them as I do from each consultation and we work on things together. Energy changes, things around us change and there is transformation, the very thing we set out to create. I'm actually fortunate that I get to see this all year!

If today was my "start" to Spring (the sun was out, the weather was warm....a perfect Spring day), then I am off to a particularly Auspicious one. And my own Transformation. I went today to speak to my old school about the teaching position they have for Feng Shui for the class. I can't describe the feeling of walking in and the flood of memories that hit but in going over a Feng Shui curriculum for the day, I didn't hesitate not only to accept it, but to feel confident in doing so.

Farmingdale, Long Island, New York---Then and Now

**The OLD days of Long Island....Wide Open Spaces, here a Nursery

As a 30 year resident of this town, I've been here longer then our new Mayor...For anyone familiar with Long Island, I moved all the way from Wantagh (The Gateway to Jones Beach) to arrive at what I consider the exact middle of Long Island...Farmingdale. We are neither the prestigious North Shore nor the trendy South Shore but are right in the middle, bordering two Counties, Nassau and Suffolk.

My personal facts that I know is that Farmingdale used to be called the Town of Hardscrabble. It was purchased from land already acquired in our neighboring town of Bethpage, New York (some may remember a post I did there about the US Open returning to Bethpage next year). My "block" had exactly TWO houses on it originally, mine and the one right next door and the rest were-potato fields - and Pickle Farms. At one time Farmingdale and it's surrounding towns were home to more then 30 pickle farms! One of the "Owners" of our blocks, of Dutch Decent, is actually buried with his family on the block.

The style of homes varies here quite a bit from the older "cottages" of which I own one to the newer and very expensive new homes that go up all over town. The land is now allowed to be constantly sub-divided and with the possible exception of my home, there are no longer "starter" homes available in our lovely town. The wide open spaces, for the most part are gone by the ongoing construction of new homes and businesses. Some of the homes in "early" Farmingdale were built together-Queens type style as they were attached. It is the way people were used to living. That's the unofficial version of Farmingdale.

Here's the historical facts: Once known as Hardscrabble (although no one knows exactly why), a man named Thomas Powell purchased 15 square miles of land from three native American tribes in 1687. Wise move. These became the areas of Farmingdale, Bethpage, Old Bethpage, Melville, N. Massapequa and Plainview. Our potato farms are long gone although we have some interesting facts about Farmingdale. These areas of Long Island really became popular when the Long Island Rail Road included a stop here in 1841. Little by little the potato fields and pickle factories that filled the area began to go and in 1902 they built a large Agricultural Collage, now SUNY Farmingdale University.

Golf brought class to the area in the Farmingdale/Bethpage area with the building of The Farmingdale Golf Course which already had one US Open here and is scheduled to have another US Open next year. One of our most treasured residents, Chief Deputy Peter J. Ganci of the FDNY was lost in the tragedy of 2001.

Still, Santa comes every year with treats for the children and Main Street retains its share of fairs and small town stores and shopping. We have our fairs and Main Street, just like any little town. It may be a bit unusual that some of the early settlers are buried with their families on the blocks they lived on...but that was Suburbia long ago. It isn't often that I will go to a client's home or business to teach them Feng Shui and work with them and find out they have as much to teach ME about what they do as I do about Feng Shui. It is, obviously, people that are in tune with the power of Energy in its purest form that often call as they already understand the principles and believe in it.

It was a surprise last week to go to my Feng Shui Consultation in Manhattan and learn of a very special place there where not only their ARTS but their philosophy made me understand just how much I don't know about certain things. I have done gyms before and even a Martial Arts Studio but this place, called Energy Fitness in Midtown was different then anything I have so far experienced.

They have different modalities of fitness there; from machines to work on, personal trainers (my daughter was with me and has just become one) and Martial Arts training. And taking clients who they teach the profound connection between MIND, BODY and SPIRIT between all of these. They also feel they cannot help a client without knowing the issues going on in their lives and spend time speaking to a potential new client regarding their past. They fully recognize that ALL modalities must work together for the best possible results which is what they seek to achieve from each and every client.

In Feng Shui we believe past energy should be cleared to begin again...and so as well they do at Energy Fitness. Their philosophy is that anyone can "hold a pose" but it is your MIND that controls your motions; and is the best teacher. Self defense is also taught there as well as Yoga and sometime in the future hope to offer Tai Chi as well as Martial Arts.

Breaking down the blockages in a person's mind allows them to open up to the possibilities. And then both seeing AND feeling the changes, not only in their bodies but on an energetic level.

I found many Feng Shui Elements in place here with one exception: This place was BUSY as were its owners. So busy, in fact, it left little to no time to "play" and there wasn't a balance. You can see on one side of this amazing center there are large, HEAVY weights (I went to move the small yellow one and couldn't budge it). To add to that, they are tied together. For the moment, partnerships were feeling heavy and weighed down...and it's wonderful when you can SEE it and so can your client. Thankfully, the person is renting this particular space will be leaving shortly, taking those weights with them. Things will lighten up considerably and partnerships will resume to their usual happy and prosperous state. Yoga will be offered in that space, something I believe will make a tremendous difference. The "weights" that have been making them feel somewhat held down will be gone...and things will begin to soar.

I find it a wonderful thing when you can actually SHOW someone their space and how it relates exactly to what they are speaking of. If you put your "Feng Shui Eyes on," I have no doubt YOU can see it as well. It wasn't the only thing I picked up but it was, I believe, the major contributing factor to what had to be addressed there. I also was to hear that the former building had been left by a large disagreement....basically abandoned. Something we think of always because we believe in Predessessor Energy and perform Space Clearings to make a SPACE your OWN and thereby infuse it with YOUR ENERGY for a new start.

Sometimes I feel like I'm doing the same thing over and over and not making any headway. Nothing seems to change, my business doesn't seem affected by the changes I am putting into it (not to mention the work or the ENERGY) and I feel like kicking back and stopping for awhile. Am I supposed to be slowing down or reving up....or is that more of a question on whether you LOVE what you do?

Feel like it....but don't. It is funny how I see how my Persistence pays off later, long after I believe it's not working or that I should be trying something new and scrapping the old ideas. With posting on AR and being busy, I have all but given up my articles. Yet they are still on the net, floating around and some are on some pretty wonderful sites---and are still being found. And after all this time I am still getting contacts from them.

I recently have been thinking about another website; goodness knows I have enough domain names and some of them are pretty good. Except that I am doing well now especially since I have put more time and energy into my old one, having it come up in places it didn't come up before. So am I spinning my wheels? I LOVE what I do but when am I doing enough?

Its fine to try new things and see the reaction to them but you may not know the outcome of a new "venture" for your business in the first few months. Or perhaps longer. I'm glad I've never been the type of person that gives up easily....as a matter of fact, I am just the opposite. Someone tells me I CAN'T do something for one reason or another and it will make me try harder-maybe just to prove them wrong. I guess I have that stubborn streak after all; which may have done well for me in this particular business. I certainly wouldn't have survived in it without perseverance.

The markets are difficult right now all over. But I am not reading on AR about Realtors leaving their fields....they also love what they do and will stick It out; using the "tried and true" and some new methods that just might work down the line. Isn't it the people that truly stick it out that really "make it?" I can think of a few people off the top of my head that have real persistence---and won't let anything stop them; They LOVE what they do! And if you've got that love, I believe it's a real attribute.

PROMISES Made in Feng Shui? Don't believe them for a Second! by Feng Shui Long Island, New York City

As I continue to reschedule, clean up and out and work on my own home, I received a call today from a new person who wanted to ask me questions about having a Feng Shui Consultation. I spend a good amount of time going over all different aspects of what a Feng Shui Consultation with Feng Shui Long Island will entail, how long it will take, what will take place during it and how I practice. I want people to feel comfortable with me and have a complete understanding of what our time together is going to consist of. And I allow plenty of time for questions.

I know that if I were inviting a "stranger" into my home I would have many questions for them as well and I often find people ask too few. They see your website or perhaps read your articles and posts but don't necessarily look further into it....and perhaps they should. I truly believe that without qualifications in Feng Shui (and none are currently necessary) that you can be calling just about ANYONE---and what about their years of practice. From my standpoint the longer you have been doing this work the more things you have seen and have learned to deal with.....although situations may be similar (loss of income, for example) because we are so individual it can come from any number of reasons....there are no "standard" cures and what might help one person will not necessarily be of benefit for another.

I am happy to say this person was doing some "homework" on his choice of Feng Shui Consultants as he mentioned he had been speaking with one recently. He mentioned several of the differences between what I said and the other consultant had told him and this is not at all unusual, we all have our own ways of consulting so I went over the different schools of thought of Feng Shui.

What I am never prepared for because it is so rare a question although it does come up is "What guarantee do you offer?" I am always caught off guard with that...and still wonder how others can make promises when they have no idea what the outcome will be. We HOPE for the best, we put our INTENTIONS into the best possible outcomes but we cannot guarantee anything; simply put, we have no idea what the Universe has in store for us.

This person was guaranteed his business which was having financial difficulties would completely turn around---and after his Feng Shui consultation he would have no problems paying his bills....and even having extra money. I tried to explain gently to him that we simply cannot guarantee a particular outcome and I was surprised to hear that he was told that. What we are permitted to tell our clients is that the "Energy WILL Change." Nothing more. And while I have seen much, much more positive and wonderful things happen (as opposed to nothing at all-which, in fact, is really rare unless a client has not made any changes) I will not sacrifice integrity to "get a job."

Feng Shui Salon

While some people call a Feng Shui Consultant because they have discovered The Secret or have recently learned of it and "it struck a nerve with them," the fact is many do call because they are having difficulties. And sadly, they are going to go with someone who can promise them results because it's very much what they need to hear right now. He did not call back--the offer of a PROMISE is a very attractive offer.

I don't know when this started and I very much doubt that it happens very often but for me, once is too often. I wish we had some standard criteria in place for Feng Shui Consultants but don't see that happening in the near future, if ever. In the meantime, if you or anyone you know are thinking of a Feng Shui Consultation, look for someone qualified who has received good training and has a number of years practicing to back them up. And if someone PROMISES you phenomenal results, RUN!

Shortly before I was "taken out of commission" this year I had the wonderful opportunity to go into New York City to present and teach Feng Shui. It was a special event the Founder of the Group was holding as she did something special every year for her employees; this year it was a Feng Shui Consultant and learning about the Principles and Topics of Feng Shui.

We put it together in a wonderful way, I thought. The first 45 minutes to an hour were learning about Feng Shui and all (or as many as I could cover) the important Topics and Principles of it. A CRASH course, almost, although I was surprised that some of the women there had a good understanding of it. Each woman who attended (some coming from a great distance to be there) was asked to provide me with either a Floor Plan or pictures of one room in their "Space" for their own Personal Feng Shui suggestions.

I don't know about them but I absolutely loved it! I believe they did as well. I could see where the doors were, their major pieces of furniture and go over each space with them with some simple suggestions on what to do to change the Energy in their surroundings. If they had a particular issue we focused on that as well.

While they were Mini-Readings we all had a wonderful time; one of the women commented as I was leaving that the Group Leader always called the "Best" Experts in and that remark made my day. I believe this is something that everyone enjoyed; they got to spend time together and had a lesson on Feng Shui and their own spaces, something that would undoubtedly be a topic for a while to come.

Kudos to a wonderful leader.....with some fun, offbeat ideas that were enjoyed by all :)

Schedules: Are They OURS to Make? Or do they take place when they're Supposed to? By Feng Shui Long Island

What I thought I had planned for March did not at ALL work out....and I am more then a bit surprised by all the unforeseen events that occurred. If anyone had asked me, I could have told them EXACTLY what I would be doing and where I would be on a certain day....or so I thought.

It occurs to me that we set schedules and dates and times with the best Intentions, which doesn't mean they are on OUR timetable. I was completely booked through the month of March and thrilled about it. I put careful planning into each date and time and do not set too many appointments because I believe that if MY energy is not the best or highest, I am not able to do the best work for my client.

Perhaps it's fortunate that I did not know I would become ill. I had an appointment in New York City the day before I got sick and was feeling particularly well except that day was windy and extremely cold. I waited for what seemed like forever because I did not want to take a chance on missing the train and I have to think that had something to do with coming down with pneumonia.

And I tried very hard to stay OUT of the hospital, even to the point of arguing a bit with my doctor when she finally insisted. I came home to try and tie up a few lose ends with work...a client I was working with at a distance and had an appointment with the following night, a meeting I was supposed to attend and the appointments I had booked. I emailed those I could and my daughter was left to handle the rest.

I was and am extremely proud of her; she went in with the "bigwigs" and handled the meeting like a pro. They were all impressed that someone so young was able to have such a knowledge and understanding of Feng Shui and relate it so well. And she called my clients for me including a new contact I had received. She let them know I was not well and not at home and would have to delay the consultations until not only was I home but feeling better.

What she told me next was a complete surprise. Not a single one of them decided to look into any of the other multitude of Feng Shui Consultants that are all over Long Island and New York City. Each and every one of them graciously agreed to wait until I was well and sent well wishes for my speedy recovery.

I am feeling much better and am going to start rescheduling these wonderful people. And while I can never wait to meet my next new clients, I have to know that this is an extra special bunch I have coming up; it is going to be my honor and privilege to do their Feng Shui Consultations for each and every one of them.

Maybe, like everything else in LIFE, things happen when they are supposed to....and the choices are not always ours.

The Changing Faces of Long Island New York Real Estate....by Feng Shui Long Island, New York City

Growing up on Long Island, New York, I have seen so many changes through the years. The lovely land we had open that were home to things like huge Pickle Farms and beautiful nurseries being sold, knocked down, subdivided and housing units going up in droves. Our original Levitt homes have all become HUGE....dormered and extended every which way you can and with many of the former zoning restrictions being lifted, homes are built so high they cut off your sunshine; or go so far back or next to you that you feel that you have someone in YOUR space.

However, the "middle" of Long Island used to be different; we are neither on the exclusive North Shore or the infamous Hamptons. We are about ½ hour from our lovely Jones Beach and we have always considered ourselves just "middle class." In spite of the forever rising taxes we are not in an exclusive area by any means.

I have been watching these last few years as the older homes that were so intriquite to Long Island and were considered "Starter" homes are being sold. Children who go off to college cannot afford to come back here to live and often the parents can't afford to stay, anyway. Families leave while others hang on tenaciously to stay somewhere they love.

These starter homes are older, quaint and, quite honestly, remind me of my own home. Originally built over 100 years ago it was just a two bedroom "cottage," a dream home for some couple or small family just starting out. These homes were often built on larger lots-say 120 X 100 and perfect now for subdivision. The newer homes that are going up on the Island are well over the half million mark....there is no land because apparently people don't WANT land anymore; they are a series of huge houses into a lot. Right on top of each other.

My son occasionally works with his father who does "flips." Or I should say demolishes these older homes that are in need of work, subdivides the lots, tears down the older homes and builds two new, big ones. And yes, it's still quite lucrative here although they sit unsold for longer they DO sell. There is not ONE I am aware of that has sold in this middle class neighborhood for under $650.000.

The other day after a doctor appt to which my son took me, he stopped to show me an older home his dad had just purchased-for a song, apparently. It was a tiny A Framed house on a sub dividable lot and it obviously needed work. It wasn't GETTING work, of course, it was getting razed but it's not the HOUSE I SAW:

What I saw was a couples dream. A few scuffed up Little Tykes Toys outside where they had plenty of property to roam on and be safe, a couple that chose and scrimped and saved to have their very own home. It sounds soapy but you could almost feel the love people once had for this little home. It affected me very much ("last time I'm taking YOU to see a house" my son muttered) but I realized how sad it was. On a Long Island that my son couldn't possibly understand because he hadn't been here then....he's been here through the demolitions, flips and money making days and barely remembers that we never locked our doors because we weren't sure what neighbors would be in that day.

The faces of "New" Long Island have left behind the Middle Class. And an entire lifestyle that many people will never have the benefit of knowing. My home with it's $10,000 taxes is a "Starter" home...and I would sure hate to see it go---in the face of "progress."

You've Fallen HARD for that New Home...Now What?? by Feng Shui Long Island

You've Found IT....Fallen in Love and Make an Offer-and Holding your breath for an Outcome!

I know that Realtors are fortunate enough to see this and hear this all the time. You may have worked with a couple for AGES, shown them dozens and dozens of homes and just when you're ready to cash in the towel, you catch that "look." The one you've seen before...the one that says they can't LIVE without this house.

There are offers to be made, Home Inspections to sweat through and mortgages to qualify for....and what about the BIDS from other potential occupants? I can't even imagine how stressful it is because if Activerain is ANY indication how hard a Realtor will work for a client to get them into THEIR home, that's a LOT of work to be done and some sleepless nights.

Although it may sound odd to hear it, in the midst of all this excitement oftentimes Feng Shui Consultants are called in as well. These calls can come at any time and we'll often hear an incredibly happy voice on the line. They've found a home, they are in LOVE---and they want you to check it just to make sure the Feng Shui is "Good."

Amazing to when I think back years ago this was not really a consideration except by a few but now (at least in New York) it is so mainstream that many homes rarely sell without a Feng Shui Consultant evaluating it first. Many will go to the property to actually see it, some can do this by pictures and most should ask first and foremost if they LOVE it. Though there may be things that are not ideal in Feng Shui, your Energy is much more powerful then you believe---I'm not quite sure why some people have such a difficult time seeing this.

I can blame it on the books but I don't dare; I DO blame it on the scare tactics that have risen in recent years. When you've fallen in love with a home take care of the necessities with your Realtor....and THEN call in a Feng Shui Consultant who can help you make inexpensive and easy changes to support you in every way. After all, how many times do you fall in love in one lifetime?

Lions and Tigers and EMF'S---Oh My! By Feng Shui Long Island, New York City

It is sometimes odd to me these days that so much has finally come to light about what we now call "Going Green." Or, to be more precise as in Bau Biology, "Going BEYOND Green." I actually knew nothing at all about this subject back in 1996 and there in our course guide were days of courses taught by an expert in the Field of Bau-Biology by a woman called Carol Cannon.

Wait, hold on, I thought Feng Shui was about Energy, Furniture placement, Mindfulness...where did THIS come in? Yet over the years it has helped many of my clients tremendously to have knowledge of "Natural, Healthy Buildings" particularly when they were remodeling. This knowledge was and sometimes is more then they bargained for as well....the out gassing that occurs from rugs and mattresses, the VOC's and other toxins in paints, sealants and even their favorite cleaning supplies. It was often more then they wanted to know.

Some things that never would have occurred to me back then were simple things that had a large but unseen impact: dimmer switches, for example. They are absolutely lovely for a dining room but they are always ON, there is always a current running. Bau Biology differs somewhat from "Going Green" in that it takes into account the Geopathic Stress of the Land which can be measured as well. It is an in depth, remarkable subject and although years ago I wished to continue on in my studies, I had found it impossible to do.

But the knowledge I gained then and still have and still learn as more and more becomes known is important to all of us Energetically. We were taught that if there is only ONE area we can address in our homes, let it be our BEDROOMS where we need to rest and restore for the next day and where, when sleeping, our bodies are most open to receiving EMF's.

Stop a minute to think about what we have in there and then reduce it: TV's, radios, alarm clocks, computers, lights.....electric blankets (they thought can make me shudder!). So many wires running under our beds (and HEADS), it is a wonder how any of us get any restful, restorative sleep. We won't even get into cells---or dimmer switches which always have a current running even when not in use.

Back then we were taught about natural fibers and cleaners---and that if there is one positive thing you can do (impractical as it may be) would be to have the bedrooms on a separate line in the house and turn off the power to them at night. Yet, I don't know one person who does that or would even consider it. And let's take a moment to think about out gassing---how many years does it take an average rug or mattress to outgass?? FIVE?

So many things to think about and possibly incorporate if you're doing your home...or business. And well worth it to stay away from a "Sick Home Syndrome." I have a New, Very Important "Position" : I Just Became a Feng Shui Godmother!

Goodness, I don't even know if this is an "Official" Real Estate Post.....Some of the Realtors will have to fill me in and let me know. Are there in fact openings for these types of things?

Some days the most usual habits bring the most unusual results....and boy, when that happens is it FUN. Today of course is stumbling to turn on the coffee (because I never remember to set that wonderful feature that will have it all ready for me as soon as I wake up), let the dogs outside and quickly check my email. Just for the really important things because goodness knows I can't process much before coffee.

I have on occasion bemoaned the fact that I would not ever likely to see any Grandchildren...as least from an "earthly" plane. My own children are not at all ready to settle down and start families, nor should they be although, theoretically they ARE old enough at 23 and 25. But I do hope it is many years in coming for them.

I have mentioned some wonderful clients from time to time who I have become particularly close to. They have gone so far as to help me with my home and even though I had been there years ago, we have never lost touch and have always maintained contact. In spite of difficulties they have gone through they are some of the most positive and wonderful people I will ever be fortunate enough to meet.

It was several months ago that I heard my client's daughter was "with child." Earlier, perhaps then they may have liked but it happened just the same and they took it as they always take unexpected news---there are higher powers at work. She is SO young to be a Grandmother and as she mentioned it I thought of how ready I was....

And it was agreed, right there, during our phone conversation. Of course she could be a Grandmother but that would still leave an opening for a Feng Shui Grandma-or Feng Shui Godmother. Quite an honor to bestow on me and quite a lot to live up to. I was thrilled and of course thinking she was kidding.

So blurry eyed this morning as I checked my mail I saw the words "Congratulations, You have just become a Feng Shui Grandma."! Or Feng Shui Godmother, apparently that role is open as well. To a "perfect" baby boy and inviting me out to see my very own grandchild. I have to wonder if this holds a bit of Fairy Dust (don't laugh, all good Feng Shui Grandmothers/Godmothers carry these things) and I spent my day thinking about the absolute synchronicity of meeting people. True, valued friends that you become attached to in so many ways it's almost as if you've known them forever.

I am taking my new role seriously and will give the family time before I descend on them....but I have to wonder if I will ever again stumble to my emails and see something that fills me with such JOY. Congratulations to the entire family and bless you for allowing me a part in this!

It is often funny when your world gets smaller how very little you can get along without. Your world narrows and you are thrilled just to be able to take a bath, some good hand cream and if you're really lucky, a wonderful IV nurse. You get by with so little and you don't even miss it. Janis Joplin: Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose....

Most of you already know I am the queen of clutter- LESSNESS. Less is definitely more around here! Or so I thought. Then I can't imagine that in the few days that I've been home I have been cleaning out and up; things that could be sold are just being donated, things I thought I had a particular attachment to I find that I wouldn't miss at all. Goodwill and several other charities are doing quite well these days.

I've had Feng Shui attacks before and many of you have as well....but this is different. This is a feeling of wanting to start completely new and fresh. I wonder what the shift was that caused this and sure wish I had some AR friends closer who might actually WANT these things I have had for so long....and still don't know what to do with. The old English China that was a gift to me over 30 years ago, more clothes then I could ever hope to wear, glasses, ornaments, things I thought I LOVED.

Perhaps it is a new process, a true starting over which I thought was done after the basement losses but may have been only the beginning. But I have to say that I truly love the feeling, it's almost a renewal. The timing is not lost on me either; this is almost close to my spring cleaning time into which I incorporate Feng Shui (more on that soon-you're doing it anyway :)

So here's to truly "lightening up" clearing out and giving away.....and there is a curbside "Alert" every day here until further notice! (I wonder why I always wonder WHAT the neighbors think :) But truly if you're looking for something and you believe I might have it, email me---it's yours!

What role does DESTINY really have? by Feng Shui Long Island, New York City

I think often of the word "Destiny." I sometimes wonder how much is really ‘written in the stars for you' and how much free will we have over each and every decision. I believe we can always change the course we are on, but should we? Are some things absolutely MEANT to happen? And shouldn't we allow them to occur?

If you know me at All you know I don't believe in coincidences or accidents. Funny thing is, I never really did; this did not come after some revelation in my life, it was rather just the way I believed things to be.

Many years ago while in my very first job as a shampoo assistant in an upscale salon, the BUZZ was all about an Astrologer coming in to get her hair done. This was my first introduction to Western Astrology and it was certainly an event there. I met a woman named Arlene Millman for the first time and just from knowing my sign, I felt as if she'd known me forever. It was so fascinating to me that I went on to study it, even doing charts for a short time---way back when.

Of course during our Feng Shui Courses we were introduced and learned Chinese Astrology. Perhaps it was my years of study under Western Astrology or perhaps because most of it just made more SENSE to me that I have still followed that more closely then Chinese Astrology.

Enter our "local" Astrologer of Long Island, someone I have been seeing on and off since I was 17. Shortly before my illness, I had decided that five years was long enough for a reading and had recently had an appointment. Robert Cook is no longer the local celebrity he used to be---the wait is now very long and his accuracy well known; people now come from all over to see him.

I was fine that day and went with a friend. Absolutely NO illness (or any evidence that I could see that particular day). When he called me in, the very first thing he asked me about were health issues---many he said and over the course of at least the last year. How could he KNOW, I thought, I haven't seen him, spoken to him...or knew anyone in common with him. It was in my chart he pointed out while he also told me that through this last year and everyone I have seen, no one has EVER been able to put a diagnosis on it.

Not yet knowing my profession as a Feng Shui Consultant, he said something that really made me sit up and it stuck with me: My home, he said, had been "battered" in a manner of speaking as well....And his words? "AS YOUR HOME HEALS, SO WILL YOU." "Now they will find answers."

Pretty profound perhaps for anyone who has gone through the home and health issues I have but even MORE so for a Feng Shui Consultant.

As a post script, I received a call today from the Engineer I had finally hired. The water tables are fine, my home can be repaired and he knows some good people that can finally help me put this all behind me. Of COURSE I should have known (and somehow did) that as my home heals, I will---and it's beginning. You just have to love the way the Universe works!
