This past June, our company sponsored a casual day to support the Honor Flight!  Almost $2,000 was raised in our offices and donated to this worthy cause.      

Stars & Stripes Honor Flights run once or twice a year, and gives WWII veterans a chance to visit Washington DC and view their memorial, along with several other memorials and historic sites.  On the return flight "mail call" is held.  Each veteran gets a letter of appreciation.  Letters are written by school children, community and family members.  They express the thanks that was never spoken when these vets returned from war.  They moved on with life, married, started families and left all talk of their war experiences locked away. 

Upon their return to the home airports, there is a welcome home, not unlike those seen today for service members returning from war.  Many tears are shed, both in the crowd and on the plane.  Veterans who have been silent so long, open up to others and relive their experiences.  It is very moving. If you ever get a chance to be a guardian, a welcome home participant, I encourage that. 

This experience came a little too late for my family.  We recently got a call from the Honor Flight saying that my step father John McGowan was scheduled for the next Honor Flight on October 8th. Sadly, I had to tell the volunteer calling, that Jack had passed away in July.  He would have been so happy to have experienced this.

If you know a veteran from the Greatest Generation, who has not gone on the Honor Flight, check it out and get them on the list!  Every day counts......

One of the most amazing things about the Komen Race for the cure are the survivors who come to run the race and celebrate life!

This week, Milwaukee welcomes the 13th Annual Susan G Komen Race For the Cure!  Our beautiful Calatrava addition to the art museum will be lit in pink.  All the lamp posts along Lincoln Memorial Drive will be sporting these 4' ribbons compliments of Kohls Department Stores.

If you are looking for one of the best restaurants in Milwaukee-Bartolottas Lake Park Bistro,                   will most likely make the list,no matter who you ask.

The name Bartolotta means a lot in Milwaukee, both in fireworks and restaurants.  But forget about fireworks and lets get to some great food.  If you are not from Milwaukee, the name may ring a bell, if you have visited the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.  Paul Bartolotta runs the Restaurant Ristorante di Mare, which has a gorgeous setting complete with a pond in the middle.  The Bartolottas are also well known as Chicago restauranteurs.

Milwaukee is lucky to have several Bartolotta Restaurants, but my favorite is Lake Park Bistro. I consider it one of the best restaurants in Milwaukee.  Nestled on the top of a bluff in Milwaukee County's Lake Park, the restaurant is located in an historic old park pavillion building, with gorgeous views over looking Lake Michigan.  The restaurant takes up the entire main level and was completely renovated and has the quaint feel of a French bistro. 

The restaurant has 3 dining sections, including the bar, and 2 dining rooms, one with windows overlooking the lake.  Lake Park Bistro offers a unique Sunday Brunch, with no buffet lines.  A menu of choices made to order makes this brunch like none other. You choose an appetizer/salad, an entree and a dessert.  For Easter Sunday one year, we enjoyed the brunch, along with the most adorable and delicious "Bunny cocktail" with a bright blue peep bunny on the edge.  PHOTO CREDIT LAKE PARK BISTRO WEBSITE

The dinner menu includes some very delicious items, here are some of my favorites!  For an appetizer, I LOVE Tranches de Betteraves et Salade de Cresson- Thinly sliced roasted red beets with horseradish creme fraiche, watercress and shaved fennel.  for an entree there are so many great choices, one of my favorites is the bone in ribeye.  For lunch you can't go wrong with a classic Croque Monsieur, a superb french version of a ham and cheese sandwich.  The menus feature fish, steaks and some french country classics. 

Desserts are the most difficult choice of all.  While some might sound like common choices, they are far from common.  The mousse au chocolat, is served in a flat cake/bar style, with the most delicious candied hazelnut crust.  The walnut cake is not a typical slice of cake, it is a mini bundt style with a french twist.  And what French restaurant would not have creme brulee on the menu?  There is no dessert that would be a disappointment on this menu. 

One of the great things about Lake Park Bistro is the seasonal Chefs Dinners or Lunches.  I was lucky to attend a special Champagne Lunch with Mireille Guiliano, who runs the champagne company Veuve Clicquot.  Each course was accompanied by a glass of champagne, paired to the course.  Mierelle then spent time talking about the lifestyles of French women and her book "French Women Don't Get Fat".  Other special dinners include a black truffle dinner, special wine dinners and visiting chefs.  PHOTO CREDIT LAKE PARK BISTRO WEBSITE

Now through the end of March, if it is snowing, come in for $5 off a glass of Veuve Clicquot, called the Clicquot in the Snow promotion!  Clever and Yummy.  If you are still looking for the best restaurants in Milwaukee, Bartolottas Lake Park Bistro must be on your list of restaurants to try! For a special occasion or an impromptu evening, check out Lake Park Bistro! If you go, let me know what YOU think!  Bon Appetite!!
