Louisiana's Economic Development (LED) group plans to spend approximately $5 million in 2011 to market the state of Louisiana to business executives around the US.
Competition among states and municipalities is fierce in convincing companies to relocate jobs to their region and its important that Louisiana's message about our strong business climate reach the right audience.  There has been a string of good economic news for Louisiana lately;  our business climate has been repeatedly touted as welcoming to small business relocation and we have won several major business relocation and expansion competitions.

Louisiana Adds 21,200 Jobs in Last 12 Months - 03/26/11 07:47 PM
The Louisiana Workforce Commission has released their February 2011 jobs numbers and Louisiana fared quite well in the analysis.  In the last 12 months, Louisiana has added 21,200 non-farm jobs which equates to a 1.1% increase. 
While that number may not sound large - here are two comparison points:
- It was Louisiana's largest increase in job growth since Hurricane Gustav
- Louisiana created jobs at a rate almost twice as fast as the rest of the nation as a whole

February 2011 Home Sales Trends - San Antonio, Texas - 03/24/11 05:44 PM
February 2011 homes sales trends numbers are now available and it looks like it was a pretty solid month for San Antonio.
There were 1,100 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 1,250 sold in February 2010.  The average sales price was $178,100 and there currently is 7.9 months of available inventory in the market.
Year to date - there have been 2,045 homes sold in 2011 versus 2,107 sold during the same time period in 2010.  Please keep in mind that during the 1st 1/2 of 2010, the homebuyers tax credit was still in effect and driving sales activity.

February 2011 Home Sales Trends - Houston, Texas - 03/24/11 05:28 PM
February 2011 sales trends numbers are out for Houston, Texas and things look pretty solid in the Houston market.
There were 3,603 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 3,684 in February 2010.  The average sales price was $210,300 and there is 7.5 months of available inventory in the local market.
Year to date - there have been 6,700 homes sold in 2011 versus 6,540 sold during the same period in 2010.
The housing market looks pretty good and the Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that the Houston metropolitan area generated the 2nd most jobs of any metro area … (0 comments)

February 2011 home sales trends for Ft. Worth/Arlington/NE Tarrant County are out and it looks like it was a tough month for the area.  The charts and graphs that you see below are a summary of activity between Ft. Worth/Arlington/NE Tarrant County.  They are weighted averages and in February - Ft. Worth represented approximately 45% of the unit volume with Arlington at 22% and NE Tarrant County at 33%.

I got to experience my first St. Patrick's Day Parade in Baton Rouge this past weekend...and it sure was great!
I've only been down in Baton Rouge for 10 months and even though my family has lived here for years....I haven't ever had the privilege of experiencing this parade.
You might think that everyone down here would be tired of parades since Mardi Gras just ended....but you'd be WRONG!

February 2011 home sales trends are now available for El Paso, Texas and it was an OK month...but combined with a great January, El Paso's housing market looks quite steady.
There were 287 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 363 sold in February 2010.  The average sales price was $166,200 and there is currently a 6.5 month supply of available homes in the market.

February 2011 home sales trends numbers are out and there appears to be a slowdown in sales activity in Dallas. 
There were 2,390 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 2,774 sold during February 2010.  The average sales price was $220,300 and there is currently 6.6 months of available inventory on the market.
Year to date - there have been 4,496 homes sold in Dallas versus 4,984 sold during the same time period in 2010.  Keep in mind that during the first 1/2 of 2010, the homebuyers tax credit was still in effect...and was propping up sales activity.

There were 604 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 666 sold in February 2010.  The average home sales price was $253,900 and there is a 5.1 month supply of available homes for sale in the market.
Year to date, there have been 1,141 homes sold in 2011 versus 1,151 sold in 2010.

There were 1,214 homes sold in Austin in February 2011 as compared with 1,249 sold in February 2010.  The average sales price was $241,900 and there was a 5.9 month supply of available inventory for sale in the market.

Louisiana Creates 17,000 Jobs - 03/18/11 05:34 PM
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has just released its January 2011 employment report and Louisiana has fared pretty well.
Louisiana created 16,900 jobs from January 2010 - January 2011 bringing the total non-farm workforce in the state to 1,873,500.  New Orleans remains the largest employment market in the state with 519,000 jobs and Baton Rouge is the second largest with 360,000 jobs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has just released its January 2011 employment numbers.  The Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex and the Houston/Sugarland/Baytown area created the most jobs of any other metropolitan areas in the US from Jan 2010 - Jan 2011!
The Dallas area created 63,600 jobs and the Houston area created 56,600.  In total - during that same time period - Texas again led the nation in job creation with 241,500 jobs.

There were 69 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 83 sold in February 2010.  Year to date, there have been 141 homes sold versus 164 sold during the same period of 2010.
The average sales price was $149,000 and 61 of the 69 homes sold were priced at $199,999 or less.

More good economic news for Texas was released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing that Texas led the nation in job creation for January 2011!
Texas added 44,100 jobs in January and their unemployment rate held steady at 8.3%
Here are the top 5 states for job creation in January 2011:
- Texas - 44,100
- Michigan - 39,700
- Ohio - 31,900
- Illinois - 24,500
- California - 22,600

Nucor Breaks Ground on New Plant in St. James Parish, Louisiana - 03/07/11 03:47 PM
Nucor has announced that they have broken ground on their new Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant which is located in St. James Parish!  This is the culmination of a multi-year process - both in permitting and land acquisition - and is a huge win for our area.
Nucor has acquired about 4,000 acres along the Mississippi River as a home for their plant.  They are anticipating spending $750,000,000 in building this first plant.  If things go well - they hold permits that allow for 2 additional plants to be constructed.

January home sales numbers are in for Houston and it looks like it was a fairly good month overall.
There were 3,085 homes sold in January 2011 as compared with 2,856 sold in January 2010.  The average sales price was $194,700 and there are 7.4 months of available inventory on the market.  Typically 6 months of inventory is considered to be a sign of a healthy real estate market, so we'll see how that number moves throughout the remainder of 2011.

January 2011 home sales trends for Austin are in and the numbers look very encouraging!
There were 1,066 homes sold in Austin in January 2011 as compared with 985 in January 2010.  The average home price was $245,000 and there is 5.6 month supply of available inventory for sale.
Part of what may be assisting these positive home sales numbers is the current economic forecast for Austin.  There have been a couple of projections released for 2011 job creation and it is estimated that Austin will add north of 20,000 jobs.

January 2011 home sales trends are in for Dallas and it looks like it is a mixed bag of news.
There were 2.043 homes sold in Dallas in January 2011 as compared with 2,210 sold in January 2010.  The average home price is $202,300 and there is 6.4 months of available inventory currently on the market.

January 2011 home sales numbers are out for Ft. Worth and it looks like it was a tough month.  The numbers below are a roll-up of data from Ft. Worth, Arlington and Northeast Tarrant County. The numbers are weighted across all three data sets and Ft. Worth proper represents around 44% of the numbers.
There were 1,220 homes sold in January 2011 as compared with 1,913 sold in January 2010.  The average sales price is up to $177,600 and average months of available inventory is 6.7.

There were 339 homes sold in January 2011 as compared with 253 in January 2010.  The average sales price jumped way up to $195,100 and months of available inventory declined to 6.6.
El Paso continues to have a strong real estate market due to a number of factors - Ft. Bliss, higher education student population growth and migration from Mexico.

2012 United States Bowling Congress Tournament Comes to Baton Rouge - 03/03/11 09:20 AM
The 2012 United States Bowling Congress is coming to Baton Rouge starting February 11, 2012!  This tournament was held in Baton Rouge in 2005 and the participants had such a great time, that they have decided to return.  I know this doesn't come as much of a surprise to those of us who live here, but the hospitality and good times that were shown to this group are still being talked about.

Baton Rouge recently received some great economic development news.  We have been ranked as the #1 metropolitan area in the country among cities between 200,000 & 1,000,000 for new and expanded corporate facilities by Site Selection!
New & expanded corporate facilities as well as plant expansions were what powered this ranking.  The Baton Rouge area reported 78 individual business expansion or relocation activities for 2010 which led the pack by a substantial margin.
