The first thing I want first time home-buyers to know is that you should find a competent realtor early on. A lot of things need to be ccoordinated. You don't need to worry about how things get done, just that it typically takes at least 2-4 times out looking at homes to find the one you want. Then it can take up to a week to negotiate the sale and the terms, depending on the individuals involved.
