" Regret is a waste of time! When we regret, we are crippling our present with our past and the conclusion is sorrow, tears and pain. Instead, utilize that time for enjoying yourself. Make it a habit to divert your mind to other things when you are supposed to regret about your past"

Chilling Out... - 09/27/08 05:38 PM
As this week thankfully comes to a close, and I am starting to run out of energy, I really think that I am going to take my cue from kitty here and chill out for the rest of the weekend. No, I will not curl up on the slack, but he sure does look comfy doesn't he..

Ouch, That's Hot... - 09/27/08 05:48 AM
As appliances age, it is not unusual for the male terminals to work loose from the molded plugs, and occasionally when they fail, the prongs become embedded in the outlet. Judging by the burn marks on the end of the terminal, it looks as if this appliance had gotten the terminals quite hot from time to time. But what is even hotter is the now bare prong that is left in the "hot" side of the outlet. As this is in a bathroom with metal faucets and connection lines, can we say that overall, this could be a real eye-opener and … (8 comments)

How Many Blogs Are Posted In AR Every Day... - 09/26/08 06:20 PM
Have you every wondered how many posts are added to the bolg roll every day here in Active Rain? Currently, there have been 710915 +/- a few posts that are part of the Active Rain system. How do I know? Every post is given a unique number ie. http://activerain.com/blogsview/710915/.  After watching AR for awhile, I have found that the code number /710915/ is part of the number sequencing of the data base. To find out how many posts have been added to the blog roll every day, take the first post closest to midnight and the last post just before midnight … (16 comments)

OOPS... - 09/26/08 04:44 PM
As part of the inspection process for the State of Tennessee, we are required to test smoke detectors for functionality. Here in Davidson (Metro Nashville) and Williamson Counties, smoke alarms are to be wired in tandem so that an alarm in one area will sound throughout the entire system. We generally find that things work better when the electrician finishes the job...

Proxy Server Error... - 09/26/08 06:26 AM
It seems here lately, I have been reading a lot of posts about how slow AR has been here lately, and the frustration that people are getting when they cannot get on to their favorite blog spot. At various times of the day, I attempt to logon or go to a post and and I get the dreaded following message:
Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request
Reason: Error reading from remote server

Is This Week Almost Over? - 09/25/08 07:04 AM
What a blur this week has been. It started off with a typical Midas touch Monday. It seemed as if every project I started, instead of turning to gold, turned a different color as it headed south. Although I tried to stay as motivated as possible, I just couldn't wait for the day to end. Pulled the covers over my head and said, tomorrow has to be a better day.
Land-o-goshin'! Woke up Tuesday to Monday revisited!!! Crap!!! Kinda felt like Ground Hog Day! Checked to see if there was a full moon, Nope! Something strange in the Nashville water … (7 comments)

Thanks, But No Thanks… - 09/24/08 05:00 AM
Many of you who follow my blogs, know that last Saturday I wrote a post about an attorney who was selling his house and he threatened to sue me because of issues that I put in my report that his inspector did not find a year ago. (Click Here to Read Post) Well blow me down, late Monday evening I get a call from the seller. To cop a phrase from the NFL, “Upon further review” of the structural, electrical and plumbing issues I addressed, it seems as if the original inspector missed these issues or failed to put them in … (31 comments)

Gas Crisis in Nashville, TN... - 09/22/08 07:24 AM
I don't know how it is in your area, but since the last wave of hurricanes, especially Ike, the gasoline supply here in the Nashville area has dried up. Driving down any major street whether it be in Nashville, Brentwood or Franklin, one will see station after station with bags over the pump handles and no prices on the signs. Those stations that do have gasoline have long lines reminiscent of the gas shortages of the 70's. To add insult to injury, just try to find a 5 gal gas can in this town.
I left about 6 this morning … (32 comments)

Federal Pacific Electric Panels... - 09/20/08 07:13 AM
Any body that has dealt in older properties are quite familiar with the issues posted on the Internet about Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels. I have listened to several inspectors in our local ASHI meetings really berate these devices and the things that they tell their clients would scare the crap out of anyone. Over expounding and embellishing on the truth as first hand experience about defects surrounding this panel system seem to be the number one reason that many agents cease doing business with certain home inspectors.
As home inspectors, we are to operate under the hat or umbrella … (7 comments)

Rut Ro... Palin Got Hacked... - 09/18/08 06:51 AM
Well it seems as if this election is stooping to new and better lows. As most of you may have heard by now, Palin's Yahoo email got hacked... Now I'm hacked off... Will the left stop at noting to 'dig up dirt' to destroy this lady? Why is it that Obama's and Biden's email accounts have not been hacked, and if Yahoo's email client is supposed to be so 'secure' how did hackers gain access? It just seems as if there are more questions than answers here folks. Why not hear what this woman has to say before judging her? It … (20 comments)

" No one keeps up his enthusiasm automatically. Enthusiasm must be nourished with new actions, new aspirations, new efforts, new vision. Compete with yourself; set your teeth and dive into the job of breaking your own record. It is one's own fault if his enthusiasm is gone; he has failed to feed it."

Relaxing With Gardening and Photography... - 09/13/08 05:18 AM
I like growing Moon Flowers, have grown them every year for the past 25 years. If any of you have grown them, you have to agree that the beautiful white blooms and their subtle fragrance are a real delight. I did have quite a bit of difficulty getting these going this year as I did have quite a battle with the slugs. But patience, fertilizer and a lot of TLC has paid off...
I hope that you enjoy...
Have a great weekend Y'all....

Habitat House... - 09/12/08 07:47 PM
Every year about this time, the church I go to, Woodmont Hills Church of Christ and the Schrader Lane Church of Christ join forces to build a Habitat for Humanity home. Tomorrow  looks like a great day to swing hammers, socialize, and  fellowship with others in the community. For the past five years I have been involved in these building projects and am looking forward towards building another deserving family a new home. I plan to take several pictures and will post them tomorrow. If we get lucky, Bubba might even show up with his power tools and... Well, if you know … (12 comments)

Antivirus for Mac… - 09/11/08 07:40 PM
I have heard arguments both pro and con for installing anti-virus software on Mac computers. After reading numerous articles by Mac ‘guru’s’ the general consensus is that by virtue of its design and architecture, the OS X operating system is not susceptible to the countless and ever-spawning viruses, Trojans, and other malware plaguing Windows-based operating systems and programs. So is this just another way for Norton’s or Macafee to generate more income from unsuspecting Mac users? For those of you who do not know, the OS X, system is built primarily upon the open source “Darwin” operating system, which is similar … (7 comments)

Don’t Let the Smoke Out… - 09/09/08 05:02 AM
Having been involved with electronics and electrical components for most of my life, I have come to learn that all electrical and electronic equipment runs on smoke. To heck with all the gobble-de-gook, electron theory and big-brained mathematical mumbo-jumbo that electrical items run on electricity. Lets face it folks, once you let the smoke out of something, it just quits working… Period! Did you ever notice, that it seems as if manufactures find the stinkiest smoke that they can find and somehow cram it into the latest and greatest gismo?

That being said, someone obviously let all the smoke … (20 comments)

Ouch!!! - 09/06/08 06:23 PM
Occasionally home inspectors run into situations that they kinda wish that they hadn't or at least wish that they had Superman's X-ray vision before entering. One thing that I run into quite often here in the south is wasps that have built nests in exterior electric  panels such as this one. Although both parties were startled at first, I quickly put the lid back on this box of stinging meanies and let the buzzing angry beasts alone.
The danger here is that some people are allergic to wasp stings and there are several cases that bee or wasp stings have … (19 comments)

Wondering Why Her Clothes Took So Long to Dry... - 09/05/08 05:11 PM
People who live in small houses often shove washers and dryers all the way back against the rear wall to have a little room to put in the clothes baskets and close the doors. After looking behind the dryer, I had to ask the seller if she was having any problems with her dryer. She did admit that  she had to dry the clothes twice. She just thought that the dryer was going out and was going to replace it after she moved.
Well, as you can see, the problem was not the dryer. Kinked or damaged exhaust vents can cause … (9 comments)

Are You Trustworthy? - 09/05/08 07:44 AM
As we all know, new home buyers are nervous and are apt to balk at any time during the home purchase process. I was a witness to this behavior the other day. Our office received a call from a first time home buyer who needed an “emergency” inspection on a property that she was purchasing.
Being only three days out from closing, the buyer put the brakes on the closing. The house she was purchasing was an owner/agent rehab, the inspector was recommended by her agent and she felt pressured by her agent to go ahead and purchase the property. … (11 comments)

Photo of the Day... - 09/04/08 06:36 AM
I have a fear of gas. Having been around several explosions in my life, anything that goes BOOM!!! or has a potential to go BOOM!!! scares the ever living crap out of me. Having been inspected twice by two other local inspectors and not being mentioned in their reports I could not help myself, I had to say something about this potentially unsafe condition. Even though there is a gas shut-off installed, shut-off valves can leak and get jarred. Any time a gas line has been disconnected from the appliance, it is mandatory that the gas line be capped to prevent … (10 comments)

The Long and Short of It... - 09/03/08 06:09 AM
There is a lot of debate between home inspectors as to whether bigger is better. Having been a long time believer in the train of thought, that bigger was better, I have come to the realization that is not always the case. Although some real estate agents like big or long reports, I have found that most like short ones as they seem to be less intimidating not only for them but for the buyer as well...
After studying my competition and talking to real estate professionals, I an learning what is successful in the market place and what does my … (17 comments)
